Even In Video Games The Jazz Get No Respect

I have to admit, I am a 28 year old video game junkie. I can’t help it. I grew up on Tecmo Super Bowl. (Check out this link….you will not regret it.) Ever since then I have been in love with any sports video game.

Deron in EA Sports

In the world of video game basketball there are basically two schools of thought. You are either an EA Sports fan or a 2K Sports fan. EA offers NBA Live 2008 and 2K offers NBA 2K8. Originally I was a die hard EA guy but over the past few years I have become convinced that EA programmers have lost their minds and are no longer watching the NBA. Thus they make a far more inferior game. A perfect example in this year’s game is the team ratings as seen below.

Team EA Rank vs. Team 2K8 Rank
Mavericks 87 Suns 93
Suns 87 Spurs 92
Rockets 84 Celtics 87
Spurs 83 Bulls 85
Pistons 82 Jazz 84
Nets 82 Pistons 83
Nuggets 81 Rockets 82
Bulls 80 Nuggets 81
Heat 80 Lakers 77
Celtics 80 Heat 76
Cavaliers 77 Mavericks 76
Lakers 77 Nets 75
Clippers 77 Raptors 75
Kings 77 Clippers 75
Jazz 76 Grizzlies 74
Bobcats 76 Warriors 74
Hawks 75 Bobcats 74
Knicks 75 Cavaliers 73
Warriors 74 Hornets 72
Wizards 72 Wizards 72
Hornets 72 Pacers 72
Bucks 72 Magic 71
Twolves 71 Hawks 70
Blazers 70 Twolves 70
76ers 70 Kings 69
Grizzlies 70 76ers 66
Sonics 69 Blazers 65
Raptors 69 Bucks 64
Magic 69 Sonics 62
Pacers 67 Knicks 62

Ok, before I mention the injustice done to our beloved Utah Jazz, I will mention some other obvious mistakes. The Kings as a top 10 team? Anyone remember where the Nets finished last year? How about the Magic? I thought they signed Rashard Lewis this year and have one of the most dominate up and coming big men in the league. The Lakers?…..Laughable. Now to the Western Conference finalist Utah Jazz. They were hosed by EA.

Aside from these team rankings the player ratings are even worse. They are so atrocious I refuse to type them here because we keep it “G” rated here on Jazzbots.com. However, I will inform you AK-47 is the highest rated Jazz player and Deron Williams is rated well below Chris Paul. I mean what the Fesenko were they thinking? EA owes Jazz fans around the world an apology.

One last random video game thought. If you are a die hard Nintendo fan, check out Infendo.com. A great place to get both old school Nintendo tidbits as well as all the Wii information you could imagine.

    Tim,

I hear the pain in your voice. Take a deep breath. Go for a long walk. Just know, we had a die-hard Jazz fan who is also an EA game programmer make it to the interview stage for blogging here on Jazzbots. The guy is a Jazz fanatic. Hopefully, we’ll get his thoughts on how teams and players are ranked.

    @ Derrick,

Just getting back from my long walk…..I now understand why you did not bring this “Jazz Fanatic” past the interview stage. Ok….I’m just kidding and would love to hear what he has to say about EA’s mindset. Regardless of what he says, I still personally endorse 2K Sports.

    Tim,
    I loved the TEMCO clip!
I agree that the ‘New Jazz’ (post S->M era) are still short on national respect.
I’m not sure that video game parity is the place I am looking for improvement.
You know things are bad when Jim Rome’s only Jazz comments are about “squirt gun 47″.

While I agree that the AK stuff was newsworthy, I’m ready to talk about something new…
The evolution of DW into one of the better PGs in the league.
Can Boozer improve and develop some defense to compliment his solid offense?
Can Okur repeat his mid-season performance from last year -or should we have traded him while his trade equity was high, in favor of a true shooter and perimeter defender?
The development of young players Millsap, Brewer, Almond, possibly even CJ & Price.

    Guess I’m a little AK-86′d

Lol! I like Derrick’s suggestions. And I Completely agree, 2K is the way to go.
    p.s. 2k’s finest year was 2k1

    @ Joshua

Sega Dream Cast was ahead of its time my friend. 2k1 on that was incredible. Ostertag coming out in the starting line-up talking trash to the crowd was priceless.

Josh and Tim - couldn’t agree more. NBA 2k1 on Sega Dreamcast was and still is the best NBA video game I have ever played. Later versions and other platforms just haven’t been able to duplicate the magic of that game. *sigh*

Tim - By the way, I was really looking forward to Deron being a monster in the 2008 version of NBA video games. I just can’t believe that was not a reality, even after reading your post.

ALMOST bought NBA Live 08 for the Nintendo Wii until I heard about how awful it was (no turbo button, no Franchise mode, no create-a-player, etc…). What are the guys at EA doing? Seriously?

I agree…i got nba live 07 right after the season ended. I was thinking that the Jazz would look good in it with like 87 or something, but they ended up being a 75. Worst rating in the league. Guess what Boozer was rated? 72. Williams? 71. Okur? 75. Of course, Kirilenko…90….there was *no one* above 75 besides Kirilenko. I had to change the ratings myself to make us the true Jazz.

Holy crap, Tecmo was so great. Jerry Rice and John Taylor were amazing, as well as Bo and QB Eagles.
