We have been studying place value in our math class. When I came to the millions place, I asked my students who might make a million dollars. Their immediate answer was “professional athletes.” The discussion soon turned to “should a professional athlete be paid millions of dollars?” Here is what a few of my eleven-year-old students thought.
“Professional basketball players should be paid millions because they play basketball in front of a lot of people just like magicians.” LN
“They should be paid millions because if they are good and they aren’t getting paid enough, they can demand to be traded. Then you would loose one of your best players.” RG
“I think sport players should make millions of dollars because why would you want to play sports if you didn’t make a lot of money? We might be missing one of our best players because the didn’t find appeal to the job. Second, it’s the manager’s decision and if he didn’t, good players might change teams that offered them more.” JNI
“I personally think that some should because they work really hard to reach their goals.” EP
“No, they shouldn’t make millions of dollars because they get to play a sport they love playing. They also get to be famous. They should get hundreds, but not millions.” FR
“My opinion is that professional sports players should earn millions of dollars. They are always working hard at what they do. The spotlight is always on them and they are, in a way, superstars.” AT
“I think that they should get paid millions of dollars, maybe a little less because that is their job and how they support their families. Also, if anything happens to them, their family will have enough money to survive.” RR
That is a taste of what 6th grade students think about athletes making “millions of dollars.” What do you think?
