The Only Good Game in Town

My eyes are tired. I can’t stop reading articles, blogs, updates, and rumors about the Jazz and the NBA lately. The start of the season is right around the corner. I haven’t anticipated something like this since Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace. Let’s hope that Andrei Kirilenko doesn’t turn into another Jar Jar Binks and ruin it all for us. Or maybe he’s more like a young Anakin. Whining and pouting so much that it eventually leads to his downfall. All that potential wasted. That would be a shame.

I could go on with Jazz/Star Wars comparisons all day long – but I’ll save that for another blog. Instead, let me tell you about why I’m excited for this season more than any other in the past. It’s really about two things: The Jazz are going to be good and there really isn’t anything else going on in the sports world.

No Jar Jar Please

We’re looking at a Utah roster that overachieved last year, so naturally I’m expecting them to do the same again in ‘08. Nothing beats looking forward to something that could end up being so great. My optimism is at an all time high with this team. None of the stars have peaked yet. I’m ready for Brewer to step up and fill the void at the 2 amongst many other improvements. They can only get better right?

It would be nice to sit here and explain all the reasons I’m excited about the Jazz, but I really think the second biggest thing they have going for them is that nothing else is remotely interesting in sports to me right now.

Let’s start with the NFL. Roger Goodell might as well just skip to the AFC Championship game right now and not even have a Superbowl this year. It’s between Indy and New England. Everyone else is playing for the bronze. Dallas is not a contender. They’re the Chicago Bears of last year – winning games because other teams are choking. I already have some “marbles” on the Pats v Cowboys game this weekend. Can’t wait to collect.

Local college football isn’t much better either. I’m a Ute fan and I’ve had it with their season. Not only can I not watch their games on TV (thank you Dish Network) , I wouldn’t even want to if I could. The worst kind of team to watch in any sport is one that teases you by being great one week, then awful the next. Cougar fans aren’t much better off. Unless your team is in the Top 25 by mid-season, it’s probably not a very exciting year.

That leaves baseball (unless you count hockey – which I don’t). The playoffs stopped being exciting when I could name more Red Sox players than all 3 other remaining teams combined. Please Boston, hurry and get it over with so we can stop watching those lame Dane Cook and Frank Caliendo ads. Even if I cared more about baseball, those two commercials would be enough to make me stay away.

The Jazz are the best thing going right now, and rightfully so. For now, it’s time to say goodbye to these acronyms: NFL, NCAAFB, MLB. And say hello again to the NBA. The only thing that could draw my attention away from this season would be Star Wars Episodes 7-9. I don’t see George Lucas coming through with those anytime soon so GO JAZZ!

I collected some ‘Marbles” on the Pats game as well. Good call.
