Who’s your Grandma?
While my last entry about Jerry Sloan as a leading man (you know - in the suaveness department) was a little sarcastic, it wasn’t sarcastic in the sense that Coach Sloan deserves to be rewarded for his leading role in the NBA. Not just by every coach or sportscaster ever interviewed about the Jazz saying that he’s the best, but by him receiving the actual award.
I also need to refer to my last post, in the part where I talked about particular segments of Jerry’s fan base. I’d like to highlight one of those segments and extend an offer for members of said market to contact me about joining a “club.” I’m talking about Grandma fans. I don’t know if this is a Utah only phenomenon, but all of us know someone within a certain age range (no need to specify-if you’re in it you know), and of the female gender who masks their alter ego by being quiet, sweet, and tender until game night.
These women are the most vocal, passionate, fanatical fans once the orange sphere launches on the opening tip. If you know what’s good for you, stay out of the vicinity when this woman is watching the Jazz. Don’t let the children near as they’ll develop nightmares from seeing the demon spawn who’s taken over their Grandma and is yelling threats (sometimes even expletives) at the t.v. When Grandma says she’s tired and going to bed; if it’s on a Jazz game night you know thats code for get out of here, the beast will be unleashed tonight. And by the way, the quiet, soft voice Grandma uses to speak with is only that way because she was screaming at the refs last night.
So here’s the invitation. Calling all Grandma fans, I want to hear from you, and I want to know why you deserve to be a member of the Grandma fan club. Aunt Wanda you’re the first official member. Now, Aunt Wanda is very computer savvy and I understand that many Grandmas might not be quite as familiar with the internet; so it’s up to you–families of Jazz Grandmas to help get them started.
On a completely different note; as I was unable to watch the last Jazz game on t.v. (I’m not a Grandma fan, a true Jazz Grandma listens to the radio broadcast when there’s no t.v.), I watched the Mavericks v. Bulls game. I know it’s only pre-season, but I have to say the Bulls were very impressive. They’ll be a team for the Jazz and all the other teams to watch out for during the season, and dare I say the playoffs? The playoffs are a long way off but I don’t think the prediction is too far off. Until next time, I’ll see you in the cheap seats (of the ESA).

Here’s a grandma for the club!! My husband and son lucked out and got tickets to 13 games this year. My son was kind and bought me a Jazz flag to wave as I jumped up and down at home watching the game. I would take a ticket away from one of them but I can’t stand to see a grown man cry.. When I can’t see them on TV (we live in Idaho) I watch play by play printed on the computer. My grandkids love and laugh at how much I love the Jazz. Linda.
I too am a grandma and true blue Jazz fan. Not only do I go to all the Jazz games, but tivo them also, so that I can rewatch the game afterwards. I have had season tickets for 25 years and am so excited for each new year. I always have a let down feeling at the end of each season. I am still upset with Dick Bavetta and think we got robbed in the play offs against the Bulls.
My mom, while in her 90’s loved the Jazz as well. We took her to the John Stockton retirement party at the Delta Center. As we were standing in line, she noticed a booth that was selling ‘John Stockton retirement pins’. She only saw the word ‘retirement’ and quickly opened her purse to take out her check book. She was ready and anxious to write out a check to give to John Stockton to help with his retirement! Gotta love it baby!
