Updog

It was just after the Utah Jazz vs. Seattle Sonics Rocky Mountain Revue contest. Paul Millsap had just had an all around incredible night. His late game heroics not only won the game for the Jazz, but cemented his hold as front runner for the RMR MVP award. The media members were clamoring to talk to him. When the doors opened to the locker room they all quickly ran in. Except me. I was having an informative conversation with the agent for Kyrylo Fesenko.

By the time I got through the locker room doors, Millsap was surrounded. I decided to hang back a bit and talk to some other players. Ronnie Brewer came walking toward the door followed by half a dozen ball boys. I asked him if I could get a few quotes about his summer plans. He quickly agreed, but asked if I could give him a minute because he was trying to cut Fesenko off at the door.

As Fesenko approached the door, Brewer called to him.

“Hey Fes, what are you going to eat for dinner tonight?”

“I don’t know” Replied Fesenko “Room Service maybe.”

“Nah, you don’t want that.” Brewer offered back. “You should try some Updog.”

Being a fan of the NBC sit-com “The Office” I was familiar with this set-up. It’s not an easy joke to pull off. Although members of my office will tell you, that never stopped me for individually lining them up and taking a crack at it (with a stellar 75% success rate I might add). But Brewer was reaching – I mean, for Fesenko, English is like a third language. Never the less I heard the ball boys all struggle to hold in their laughs. I too found a huge smile creeping on to my face. We all braced for the next response.

“Updog?” Fesenko replied with a quizzical look upon his face. “What’s Updog?”

“Not much Fes, What’s up with you.” Brewer calmly pulled it off.

I gotta give it to Brewer. Nothing but the bottom of the net.
