We Should Be So Lucky

Alright. The preseason is over, time for predictions…. Um. On second thought, I can’t go there. What can I say that hasn’t already been written a million times about the upcoming season already? What I really want to talk about today is how jealous I am that I don’t live in Boston. I would kill to be a chowderhead right now.
I love the Jazz and Utah in general. For the next year though, I wouldn’t mind moving to Massachusetts. Think about it. That city is on top of the sporting world right now in every way imaginable. By the end of 2008, they could very well own every major league title:
- The Patriots are on their way to another Super Bowl win. They could even get there undefeated.
- The Red Sox are about to knock out the Rockies in the World Series. It looks like a sweep is on the way.
- The Boston College Eagles are sitting at #2 in the BCS rankings and are on track to play in the championship game come January.
- The Boston Celtics have a legitimate shot at winning the NBA title. With The Big Ticket, Jesus Shuttlesworth (Ray Allen for those of you who haven’t seen He Got Game), and The Truth all still playing in their prime, I like their chances coming out of the East and maybe taking down the Spurs or Suns.
That’s 4 potential titles belonging to the citizens of Mass at the same time. Does that count as the Grand Slam of Sports Cities? Or would we call this a Quadfecta? I don’t know if that’s a word, but trifecta is, so I’m going with it. If you’re a fan of Bill Simmons (ESPN Sportswriter) like me, you’ve got to be wondering why he is still living in LA and missing out on this once in a “history of sports” event.
Why is the 6th state to join the Union enjoying all of this success right now? I can’t answer that, but it’s enough to make me believe someone is watching over them. Perhaps Mitt Romney has a chance at the Presidency after all.
Now to make this post somewhat Jazz related, I was trying to decide what the closest experience Utahns could have that would match this abundance of success in Boston. It’s just not possible. The closest I could come up with is a Jazz title (naturally), a Utes BCS championship, and a Cougars Final Four Championship ring. Throw in a Blaze, Bees, and Grizzlies super season and we still wouldn’t be in the same realm of sporting euphoria as New Englanders.
I don’t know if Boston will pull it off and hold all of those titles. I kind of doubt they will. It sure would be fun to live there for the next year and enjoy the ride as it unfolds. Maybe we’ll be lucky enough to have a similar opportunity here locally in like 30 years. Salt Lake will have to have a NFL and MLB franchise by then right? For now, I guess I’ll just continue to be jealous from afar, root hard for the Jazz, and maybe distract myself by reading a couple more NBA Preseason prognostications.

We all know that a trifecta must involve TV, Sex, and Food – just ask George Costanza.

My sister, Jayna, called “Jayner” by her husband, lives in Boston and is an avid fan. But since they frequently exchange -a for -r and -er for -a, wouldn’t it be a “choudahead” in “Masserchusetts?”
