My Tribute

Since it is STILL pre-season and I am struggling to come up with a topic for this blog, I have decided it would be a good time to share my undying love for . . . John Stockton. Please bear with me, many of you have heard this before, but here it is publicly for all to see . . . .I wanted to marry John Stockton. Oh, I am SO serious.

When I was in Junior High, I thought John Stockton was, oh about 18. So, that seemed a perfectly acceptable age gap for me. In reality, I was fourteen when he was drafted, he was 22. Hey, what did I know, he LOOKED 18. What I loved about him then, was that he was so dang cute! In an innocent boy sort of way. I never imagined that he was married. I was going to graduate from high school and we would ride off into the sunset.

Over time, the love became much more than physical attraction. I admired the way he played and the way he handled himself. I’m not sure how old I was when I discovered he was married, but I do remember that– for quite awhile–I didn’t let that discourage me . But, when I found out he had kids, well, I had to call it quits then.

After many years of admiring his play on and off the court, I think what I love the most about him is that he was a TEAM player. It wasn’t just about him. It was about him CONTRIBUTING to the overall team. He was humble and did not seem to crave the limelight, in fact, often, he seemed to avoid it altogether. I was mesmerized by a player who consistently gained his fame by ASSISTS instead of points.

Very rarely did you see him ‘lose it’. He seemed to have a sort of inner motivating force that was not dependent on praise or money or fame. He loved the game. He had such a quiet but passionate energy about him.

Many have written about John as a player and as a person. There are not enough John Stockton’s in the NBA. I have gotten over the heartbreak of losing my first crush and I am truly in love with my husband (Kurtie), but there will always be a place for John in my heart. If only all our heroes could be so lasting.

Hey, nice article. I was just browsing the net for a John Stockton jersey and ran into your site because he’s one of my favourite players of all time and he always seemed to go under the radar when people talk about the greats. You’re right, he’s got a quiet and calm demeanor (which is probably what makes it easy to overlook him) but has a burning passion inside. I miss this guy a lot. There really isn’t a lot of John Stocktons in the NBA anymore, but the point guard for my team, Jose Calderon reminds me of him in that he’s absolutely unselfish, team-first and is always looking to set up other people to score before he even thinks about himself.
