I know my place…

Following a lively discussion in PE last week about my coaching abilities, I asked a few students who they would choose to be their personal coaches. I am not too bad at coaching 6th grade students, but then they only play against their classmates and there isn’t a serious reward at the end of a game. My feelings, therefore, remained uninjured as the students left me out of their choices, given that I let them choose anyone they wanted.
Ryan went right to the point. He loves sports and is an all-star pitcher. He said “I would pick Deron Williams, because he can play really good defense and offense. Of course he can pass and handle the ball really well.”
“I would be coached by Matt Harpring. I like Harpring. He’s a solid player and a nice guy. He is also the position I usually play. He is a hustle maniac. Every time he is in, his face goes red because he is running so hard. He also doesn’t have tatoos or earrings. He’s a cool guy. His wife works where my dad works.”
Logan is another Williams devote. “I would choose Deron Williams. The reason is because is the best point guard ever!” (Remember this student is eleven years old…) “He is great at passing through other people when dribbling and that is what I am struggling with.”
So, for me, it’s back to the math, social studies, language, writing, science and reading lessons, curing broken hearts, passing out band aids, and listening to eleven-year-old humor and finding it funny. I’ll leave the coaching to the professional guys.
