Jazz vs. Cavs: A Coach’s View

No, this wasn’t a replay of a certain all time great guard from a school south of here (per Urban Meyer) who made a baseline to baseline dash with seconds left on the clock to win a huge game for his team. This really just happened last night when Deron Williams (not Danny Ainge) took an inbounds pass from Carlos Boozer and went baseline to baseline against a stunned and disorganized Cleveland team. LeBron James said afterward,”we thought they would call timeout!” Wow to lose a game because you thought they might call one! It was amazing to see how Cleveland just didn’t run a “defensive break” and get back to protect the hoop against the drive and at least try to make him give up the ball and let time run out. Jerry wanted a TO but Deron had to make a move he saw and it worked. The TO can always be the right call too because you can advance the ball to 1/2 court and run a set play ala years ago, Jazz vs Houston with Stock hitting the big shot.

I liked the use of the Zone defense on and off by both teams. It was effective when used in short spurts and did puzzle both teams from time to time. I hated that silly illegal defense rule and have to listen to coaches calling illegal during the game instead of being able to really being able to continue to coach the game.

AK was terrific, Brewer looks to be the real deal on both ends and mark my words, I think Millsap has the ability to be an All Star within 3 years. He is relentless on both boards, can play defense on 3, 4, and 5’s and has alittle more offensive “stuff” to show us every game. What a find! Nice going Kevin and staff.

If the Jazz continue to improve, take a look at the Nov schedule, there is not a team that on PAPER they won’t be favored against. Note I said on PAPER!

JAZZ by 12 over Seattle

JAZZ by 15 over Memphis Again I said on paper, Using Jerry’s terms, we can’t go out and play in our TUXEDO’s.

I went to a game against the Nets last year where the same thing happened only with opposite results, down by two the Nets needed a quick two to tie the game or a three to win it. With just seconds left the Jazz were sure that New Jersey would call a timeout, in the confusion Vince Carter races down court and shoots a near-half court buzzer beater.. and it goes in..and we lose and our stomachs dropped. Maybe Deron remembered that game and how deadly a weapon Confusion can be to a team in those final ticks. Regardless, beautiful play and wonderful finish. It was more than worth the risk.
