Life Lessons from Basketball
Posted by Jackie Corbridge on November 15, 2007
As I have been meeting with the parents of my fourth graders this week in their SEP conferences, (Student, Educator, Parent, We knew them as Parent Teacher conferences in days gone by) I realized that many parents are using defensive tactics found in the game of basketball to raise their children.
First we find the child that is the “only” child or the only child left in the home. The parents are able to “double team” to meet the needs of the child. Still the child is able to split the defenders and “score” right over their heads. some children are VERY good at doing this!!
Next we see the two parent home with two children, or a single parent home with one child. The defense is then “MAN TO MAN”. The parents can “double down” when their “man” is not an immediate threat. but this can backfire and lead to another score!
The last of the defenses is using a “ZONE” defense. Those family team that have more children than parents/adults. The only defense available is a “zone defense. Even as good as a zone defense can be, the offense seems to find the hole and make you pay.
I give kudos to all those parents trying hard in this game of life to raise children. It is a hard game to play! But like basketball, a well played game has many rewards.
