If It’s Broken, Please Fix It

Okay…..the Jazz are not fixed yet. I wouldn’t say it’s time to panic yet, but depending on how things turn out on the rest of this road trip I might have panic in my stocking come Christmas day.

A lot has been said recently about the poor defense the Jazz have been playing. I agree that they do need to improve defensively, but I think other aspects of the Jazz can be fixed and will have an immediate impact. If I could wave my magic wand here are the 5 things I would like to see:

5- Solidify the rotation. I realize Jerry Sloan has more basketball knowledge in his left pinky than I do in my entire body, but he really needs to figure out who he wants to play. Guys like Gira, Miles, Price, Collins are a mess. They have little to no confidence and are streaky at best. Pick a back up two guard and let him play without looking over his shoulder.

4- Back up Point Guard. Similar to number 5, but my solution is a little different. Hart hasn’t cut it in my opinion. I knew he wouldn’t be the guy when the Jazz signed him. (Long personal experience from Hart’s days with Phoenix summer league team) My solution is either give Price some run, pull a trade or let Brewer/AK handle the backup PG minutes.

3- Healthy Memo. This would have been higher on my list, but it is the one thing the Jazz really don’t have any control over. If Memo can get his shooting percentage back up to his career average, the Jazz are a much better team.

2- Williams 4th quarter TO’s. Not every turnover has been Williams’ fault, but a lot of them have. He has the ability to do everything else on the court why not take care of the ball a little bit more.

1- Take it to the rack. The paint gets closed down in the 4th I realize this, but I would much rather see the Jazz lose trying to take it inside than watching them settle for jumpers and avoiding contact. Boozer needs to stop with the fade away start trying to rip the rim off. If Boozer does this, the Jazz will get teams in the penalty quicker and find it easier to score coming down the stretch.

    Hi!

I Like your blog and I am OK for your opinion.
I think AK is a good player but make a trade with the suns is a good idea.
Deron Williams is a very good PG but the Jazz not have a good PG in the bench.
I think the solution is make a trade and sign a good PG per the bench and Okur must be recuperate of his injury.

    Bye!
(sorry, my english is very bad because i am from Spain)

For the most part I agree to your comments. I wouldn’t trade A-K though cause he changes the pace of the game, and make players miss if they loose his defense then the Jazz will really fall.
Boozer needs to move his feet more on defense and take a charge. I mean Collins and Milsap have taken big hits but where is Boozer hiding in a corner scared to get a foul called on him.
Williams does not deserve to go to the allstar game yet. He has not proven he can control a game in the last 5 minutes of a game. He turns the ball over and seems afraid to take a shot. Go strong don’t wait for a foul and be a coach on the court. Oh yea his defense is stinking too. He lets everyone into the lane and hardly ever defends the passing lanes.
Memo is showing to be the biggest wimp ever. Every great player plays through injuries or bruises, strains, whatever. He can put the points up but can’t play defense. If your going to trade go get the big bad Ben Wallace, he’ll defend the paint. Or trade for Oneal in Indiana. Say la ve Memo!
Now Brewer is the man. He gets steals, makes his free throws, jumpers, and hammers it down. Go Brewer, if only he would drive more on his guy cause someone to have to help to defend him it will open the inside more.

    Thats all I guess.

    Hi,

I live in Arizona though I grew up in Utah. I defend the Jazz down here, and the past few weeks have been tough, because of the Jazz losing several games. To me it almost seems as a team that the Jazz have lost their heart. I do not mean to single out any one person, but it seems that when the Jazz play well as a team that no one can stop them. When the Jazz are out of whack then it seems like almost any team can beat them. As a team I would like to know if the Jazz have any heart. I think that at the end of the year this streak of losses is going to come back to haunt the Jazz, and they will end up with a lower seed in the playoffs than what they would like to have, if they make the playoffs at all. I have read several comments from angry Jazz fans?, and there needs to be no anger. What there needs to be from every Jazz player is a quiet resolve that they are going to win every game–every game no matter who they play. How is it that the Jazz seem to win almost every game that they play against Detroit, and they they are not able to win against Atlanta or Portland? Where is the quiet resolve from all of the Jazz players to win every game? Well that is what I think.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; There are two reasons why the Jazz haven’t won a championship: Micheal Jordan and Jerry sloan!
Jerry Sloan is a good, maybe a great coach. But, he is not a championship coach! His style of coaching is way out-of-date! He is way too grumpy! This last fiasco with Giri is proof of that! We almost lost our secret weapon because of him! AK-47!!!

    @ Mark

We need more Jazz fans down in the valley of the sun, so keep up the good work my man. I agree a lot with your theory regarding the heart of this team. I’ve been thinking a lot recently about heart and what it takes to change momentum when the chips are down like they obviously are for the Jazz. I’m not sure if I’ve come up with a good solution or not and to be quite frank with you, I don’t think the Jazz powers at be have the answer either.

The Jazz need to get their swagger back and I honestly think they only way that happens is by winning games and learning how to execute down the stretch.

At this point one of two things is going to happen. This team will pull together and fight through this, or we will continue to see the wheels come off just like we did with Gira last night.

It’s a Catch 22. No wins, no confidence, no confidence, no wins. What I don’t get is Jerry Sloan doesn’t ever seem to want to fix his BROKEN team, I understand you gotta let them play through the slump but this is getting ridiculous. Call up Morris Almond and see if he can get us some points, try ANYTHING.

Honestly I think it was a big mistake to let Fisher out of his contract. As poor a shooter as he was he always came through with some big shots down the stretch, and having been a part of championship teams didn’t lose his cool in the final minutes of a ball game. I think he relieved some of the pressure off D-Will, because D-Will didn’t feel like it was ALL on him to win, thus freeing him up to continue to play loose regardless of the situation.

Jerry Sloans time came a couple years back. He just will not allow growth. We havn’t had a viable shooting guard since the Hornacek team. We are going no where untill we develope one. Oh ya I thought that was the coach’s doing. TIme for Larry Miller to terminate his relationship with Jerry. Jerry had great talent on the teams that made the finals. Period it was the coach to a certain degree. However those teams had a lot of talent. period! Lets get someone in here who believes in these kids and develope them mentally as well as physically, into the championship team we all have been waiting for our whole lives.
