Featured Jazz Fan: Annie’s Basketball Group

‘Mighty Jazz Fans’
‘Mighty Jazz Fans’

Today we recognize the fearless women of Annie Whittaker’s morning basketball group. Annie shares that the pickup games are intense and the conversations regarding the Jazz are raw. The tenacity of these women earns them a place as Featured Jazz Fans. Plus, we heard this group beat the Nets this year. So who are these warriors? Annie makes the introduction - “From left to right beginning with the backrow: Suzy “the Inventor”, Lori the “Conductor”, Stephanie “the Pro”, Wendy “the Trickster”, Jen “the Conjurer”, Jan the “Enforcer” (do not try to run through one of her picks, she knows how to use all 5′2″ of that frame), Frontrow:  Leslie “the Producer”, Margo “the Conqueror”

And goes on to write - “All nicknames were given to protect the innocent (namely me, who was lucky to get the photo, although they think it’s going to be a thumbprint size).  Seriously, I tried to give each one a name that describes them, or their playing style, or for instance, Margo is a breast cancer survivor, she also learned to play by coming and watching us, and then jumping in.  You wouldn’t be able to tell now that she had never played before our group.  She also has seven kids.  I think I’m the youngest out of this group at 35.  You wouldn’t be able to tell by energy level or playing ability!”

So here’s to you ladies, your tenacity and your loyalty. Jazzbots salutes you!

    Hey you guys, I swear I thought the photo would be small! Really, though, why do you think I hid behind the camera? Besides, there’s nothing to worry about, you all look great! To those of you reading this post who are not in my basketball group, the picture contains about 1/4 of us! They’re all great basketball players and human beings. Happy Holidays everyone!

    Oh, and that little comment about age. What difference does it makes that I’m the youngest…among friends?

    The Jazz would be much further ahead to release Jerry Sloan as opposed to Gordon Giricek. A championship cannot be won with a man who so blatantly shows favorites. Please think with your brains and not your rear ends.

    @Ritchie:

    Ah…okay. Whatever you say(?). Did you mean to post your comment here?

    Actually Ritchie, while Gordon doesn’t play in our group, we’d probably let him play a little, just as long as he doesn’t try to draw the charge as much as he does with the Jazz. We don’t tend to call those, we just shun those who repeatedly attempt them. As for Coach Sloan, I wish he was there to Coach for us, although I don’t know if he would allow the ponytail fixing timeouts, or the need to talk about the latest news/exciting event timeouts. They’re not exactly official time-outs, we just kind of start talking and then everybody joins in the conversation and we realize we have quit playing. I don’t know, maybe the Jazz has those kind of time-outs during practice too. Thanks for your undivided attention Ritchie.

    Richie……I think maybe you got the wrong blog spot. We like to think things through and comment on what our thoughts bring out not make unrational statements. One little thing……Don’t all coaches have favorites who play, practice, and work to the very, very best of their ability and then give a little more? I thought that was how the starting five were picked? It’s been that way the last 45 years I have lived with a coach.

    I am a big jazz fan but definitely not a fan of that picture or should I say poster. You took a couple of pictures surely that was not the best one. Come take another one when the other 10 are there, better yet, let me take the picture. And by the way I am 5′ 4 not 5′ 2.
