We Wonder Why…..

Before we get to the meat of my article today, time for a little house keeping. My New Year’s Resolution is to blog more, so as of 3 days into 2008 I’m doing ok.Back to our regularly scheduled program. I’m not one to tip toe around things so I’m just going to go out and say it. Jazz fans are lame. At least we have been a couple of times this year. Why in the world did we boo Gira last night? I mean seriously, are you kidding me? Are we mad that he no longer plays for us? Do we want him back that badly? Did we get the worse end of the trade? Did he ever talk trash about Utah, its fans or the organization?
I mean I sort of get why we booed Fisher earlier this year, (I wasn’t part of that crowd either) but last night with Gira was over the top. I have to give kudos to the people sitting on both sides of me in section 119, they get it. We were cheering for Gira as loud as we could mainly in defiance of the crazies around us. And we wonder why free agents think twice about signing with our beloved Jazz. Why in the world would they want to play for us when we show no class? Go ahead and try to justify the actions of the majority, but I just don’t get it.

As a group of us were driving into the game last night, ( we have been doing this for several years as season ticket holders), we discussed the reception that may be given to Gira. We all agreed at best we will never know all that went into the decisions made in this most recent trade. What we do know is that when we make decisions as a group or individual it is not posted over the internet or TV media, it remains private and respected. The lack of maturity in the stands last night by our UTAH fans was embarassing. I have sat through the booing of several previous player trades and wondered why, why do the fans show such disrespect? Over the years I have watched the seats fill up when the team is doing well and when they fall under our expectations we see a sea of green (empty seats) especially in the upper bowl. We may not agree with every decision made by a team player or coaching staff, but we do make the choice to show our level of maturity. I stand and applaud every one that welcomed Gira back home with a hug, hand shake, smiles and cheer. I also applaud the ex-team members of Kyle Korver as I watched every one of them approach him and congratulate him with hugs and hand shakes at the end of the game. Come on Utah Jazz fans grow up and support this team of wonderful young men giving us the best entertainment our money can buy, without them you all would only have the weather and highway traffic to talk about.

If that is the only blog you do all year you have done well. You said you may possibly understand the Fisher thing but that one even thew me for a further loop. Why would you boo someone who is doing what is necessary for him to be with a very sick child and to give support to her mother?? I wish one of the very immature fans could explain to me why they boo? I don’t understand booing anyone during the games. Even if I don’t like a call from the refs I yell something besides a boo. I guess if I dig deep I would have to say I could utter a boo if there was a flagrant four that hurt a player. In that case I could boo a Jazz player as well as an opponent. Why do we want to be so fickel and immature. I am embarrased enough when the fans do that to not admit that I am one of their fans. Why do we seem to enjoy having terrible things said about us by every team in the NBA? I really do wish I could understand it. I was proud of Larry for going out and shaking hands with Gira.

I looked at Philadelphia Newspaper on line, read what they said about UTAH and I was embarrassed to live here. Gira never said anything rude about Utah he was shocked as I was. The fans are what makes the team a whole, when we boo to former Jazz Players we are booing to our own team. Gira did a wonderful job for Utah and he deserves the respect from the fans. We all have problems with our bosses for one reason or another and if you don’t like how you’ve been treated uou are you leave, RIGHT!! so why can’t a Jazz Player leave for one reason or another. He or she deserves the respect from the fans. Grow up Utah you are not in high school. My thanks to Gira for a fine job. May you find what you are looking for. We also need to welcome Kyle, fine job and best to you as well.

I think I’m in the vast majority, who did NOT boo Gira or Fish. However, I think fans pay for their seats and have the right of free speech. They can cheer King James for a record performance or boo the Mailman for defecting to the Hated Lakers. We could be booing our own players and coach (prime example the Knicks). So, things could be worse. This happens in every city. Fans are fanatics. There are about 6 fans just across the aisle from us, who are so loud and obnoxious (for the Jazz). I’d rather not sit near them, but they paid their money and have the right to cheer.

Relax…it’s just a game. Go and have fun.

An interesting quote from the Philadelphia Inquirer:

“At least the booing could get Giricek used to playing in Philadelphia.”

Philly, like NY, make our fans look tame.

I think after giving I dont know how many seasons with the jazz that Gira deserves a little more criedt then we are giving him. Yeah he hit a hard spot in his career, so how can blame him for wanting a system that might work for him better. Sure if he stuck around and got some coaching from Jeff like Andrie he might of gotten better. The fact is, is that the jazz needed a shooter and couldn’t afford to wait if they want to get back to the playoffs. With Kyle at least that puts less pressure on boozer and D. Will to go and have an outstanding game. I would like to pay my respect to Gira for his hard work. I would also like to say welcome to Kyle Kover and good luck to you.

While I was not in attendance…Kentucky is a LONG way off…I can understand to a degree why Giricek may have gotten the rude reception in Utah. It is no secret that he and coach Sloan butted heads, and that had to have a negative effect on team chemistry and performance. Had Giricek been more of a team player who worked to fit in with Sloan’s system instead of bucking the system he may have been more respected by the fans. Sloan is a class act, the best coach in the NBA, and it’s hard to see how any player…especially a fringe talent like Giricek…would not cooperate and work hard for him. It would have been to Giricek’s career benefit and help the Jazz be a better team. That might explain the boos…at least a little bit.

our fans shouldnt of booed him.But our team seriously had problems when he was there. But i am so dissapointed in the jazz this year.I mean who loses to the bobcats, and all those crappy teams yet can beat all the good teams??????!!!!! cant sloan do anything about that or is carlos boozer and okur to lazy on defense to care .boozer and okur are always watching guys go past them.

Maeci on January 7th, 2008 said...

I have to agree with you Travis I more then oncehave seen other players go up for lay ups and wonder why boozer or okur don’t step in and take a charge or even a blocking foul at least they don’t score. I think the jazz as a team need to get better at defense or our hopes of going to the playoffs again this year is over. hopfully sloan can get them going.
