Fair is fair - questions for the Jazz…

We have been busily adding our thoughts about the Jazz and this season’s prospects and observations. When we discussed what we should write about in our next blog, the overwhelming response was to ask the Jazz organization a question. The students are fascinated by how the basketball floor is put together. So here is what they want to know: 1. Does it go down on the same day the team plays? 2. How does it “lock” together? 3. How many people does it take? 4. How long does it take? 5. What do they do when the team changes colors, logos, or sponsors- do they do a new floor or scrape the paint off of the old one? 6. Does it cover up the ice rink? 7. Why doesn’t it buckle when the players run across it?

If anyone out there in cyber-land knows the answers to the questions, let us know. You can tell we had a lot of discussion about “the floor.” Kids want to know about the strangest things, and frankly, so do I!

Things I wouldn’t mind knowing myself.

While that is not my department at the arena, I can share a little bit of insight into the floor.

Usually, the floor gets installed soon after the event right before basketball. We had an event with motorcycles on Saturday Night, so the Jazz floor was installed either Sunday or Monday morning. Since we have several Jazz home games in a row, the floor will stay in place for two weeks, maybe more.

When the Jazz changed the colors on their logo a few years ago, they simply sanded the floor down to remove the paint, and repainted the floor. When we changed the name of the building to EnergySolutions Arena in 2006, They put giant stickers on the floor to cover up the old name. Then, about a month later, when the Jazz were out of town for a few games, they sanded the area that said Delta Center on it and painted the new name.

Now, about the ice. Before the E-Center was built, we had hockey in our arena, so we had ice in there all the time. There was a small cover they put over the ice before putting the basketball floor on top. However, it was really cold for people sitting close to the floor.

Now, we only have ice in the arena two times a year when Disney on Ice comes to town. They make the ice a day before the first show, and they melt it right after the last show, because we usually have a Jazz game the next night.

I hope the rest of your questions gt answered!

I have passed your question on to Jamie Galileo, the VP of Facility Services, who is responsible for getting the floor put in and taken down. As soon as I get his response, I’ll post it for you.

    Cheers!

Here are the answers to your questions from the guy who knows, Jamie Galileo, who manages the EnergySolutions Arena maintenence.

    1. Does it (the floor) go down on the same day the team plays?

The floor is usually installed a day or two ahead of the next Jazz game, or is left in place if there isn’t any reason to pull it up for a concert or other event. On game days, the Jazz practice on the floor at 10 a.m., and the visiting team practices at 11 a.m., so the floor and the arena need to be ready by game morning.

    2. How many pieces are there for the floor, and how does it “lock” together?

210 pieces (15 rows of 14 pieces). The floor goes together like a jigsaw puzzle, with interlocking edges on each piece to ensure it goes together tight.

    3. How many people does it take to put it in?

    8 to 10

    4. How long does it take?

    3 to 4 hours

    5. What do they do when the team changes colors, logos, or sponsors- do they do a new floor or scrape the paint off of the old one?

We sand off the old paint and put down the new paint. When we changed the arena name from Delta Center to EnergySolutions Arena, we put a giant vinyl bumper sticker over the “Delta Center” logo until the team went out of town for the Christmas road trip, then repainted the new logo.

    6. Does it cover up the ice rink?

Not anymore. Back in the early days of the Delta Center, the floor was often laid over the ice for the “Golden Eagles” or “Grizzlies” hockey team. But since EnergySolutions Arena doesn’t have a hockey team playing here anymore, ice is only put down for the “Disney On Ice” shows, which happen when the team is out of town on a long road trip.

    7. Why doesn’t it buckle when the players run across it?

It’s locked together really well and very tight.

    Thanks for asking your question!

    Cheers! Eric
