A Coach’s View: Jazz, Pacers and More

Which outfit is going to show tonight?  The team that could get the Jazz a very high pick in the spring or the team that has the capabilities to at least go to the Western finals again.  The second half vs. Portland was awful.  Two of the Blazers young guys have really done a number on Utah this year and not even a hard foul has been taken.  Make that 3 players, can’t forget Roy.  The Portland “matchup”  continued to give the Jazz problems as it has other teams.  Enough of that, the Blazers are probably a better team right now, more speed, shooting, better “D” by far.  It’s possible the two teams could be the teams to beat in the next couple of years.

This week is the time to get better!  The Pacers are a run of the mill team.  The Suns are terrific but don’t seem to be feared as they were.  Nash is still great and his “cast” is still very, very good BUT it seems to me they don’t “awe” you as they used to.  Never should have let Thomas get away.  Orlando is also good BUT again has tailed.  Howard is a real stud, Hill still good, Lewis can take the game over also can be taken over by some tough hard nosed “D”.  Milwaukee is up and down but mostly down, more on them later.

My feeling is the Jazz get the next four!  By the way, the Suns are not as bad on defense as people think, they just play so fast that  “you” get to score too.  Want to talk about Denver in that same vein in the next week or so.

Coach, I sure hope you’re right about this week being the turnaround for the Jazz. I wish I had your confidence in them, but it seems to me that they have to overachieve to beat good teams, and that takes an awful toll during the grind of the season. I’ve been a fan from here in Kentucky for years, every since Jerry Sloan came to work for them, and it’s hard from this distance to get any volume of news…but it seems to me that EVERYTHING has to click just right for them to win a game against a good opponent, even at home! I would like to see them go on a run and regain control of the division, but with the injury to Andre and Okur having a somewhat mediocre year, it’s hard for me to see them becoming dominant in the division. I think a playoff appearance would represent a masterful coaching job by Coach Sloan with this personnel. But again…I sure hope you’re right…
