Deron’s Dunk

‘Statement’ (Melissa Majchrzak - NBAE/Getty Images)
“And it’s been a long December and there’s reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last” —- Counting Crows
At 9:40 remaining in the third quarter of the Jazz blowout win over the Hornets, Deron Williams had a quick decision to make. He had just dribbled between the legs, behind the back, faked left then drove around All-Star, and MVP candidate, Chris Paul and then eyed 7-foot-1 Tyson Chandler standing between him and the hoop.
It was Chandler but it might as well have been Byron Scott, coach of the West team, who left Deron off the All-Star team again. It could have been fickle (IE…clueless) NBA fans who voted for at least 10 other point guards ahead of him for the All-Star team. It could have been any other critic who thought he couldn’t carry Chris Paul’s jock strap. But it wasn’t. It was Tyson Chandler and Deron quickly decided that dunking on the 7-footer and nearly tearing off the rim would ease the pain just a bit. I believe it did.
That exclamation point of a dunk, along with totally shutting down Paul once again, showed everyone that regardless of how good Paul is, Deron Williams can tear him up. And regardless of how great the Hornets have been this year the Jazz have still won 7 of 8 when Deron is playing against Paul.
Now this is The Team all Jazz fans were waiting for and here is the good news: Even including that horrible December stretch when the Jazz lost ELEVEN games, this team has still won a higher percentage of games than last years Western Conference finals team.
Everyone who jumped off the bandwagon should hop back on because this team is much better than last years. Mehmet Okur, is now back to playing at last year’s pace. Andrei Kirilenko is twice the player he was last year. Last season the Jazz had no real shooting guard and now are overloaded with talent. Ronnie Brewer’s average has more than doubled to 12 points and 2 steals while playing half the game. Kyle Korver gives them confidence down the stretch and something tells me that he can shoot the ball. Williams and Carlos Boozer averages continue to climb. Their number one pick, Morris Almond, can score 53 points in a d-league game and still can’t get on the court.
The great Jazz finals team of 97-98 had a total of 3 players who averaged double figures and none of their top players were under 26 years of age. This year’s team has 6 players scoring in double figures and have 8 players averaging over 8.1 points per game. Ten players on the Jazz roster are under 26 years old.
This team has got it goin’ on and if keeping Deron off the All-Star team makes him play like this, then Chris Paul will get all my future votes.

Wow. That was very well said. I believe everything you posted. I did not like how many people became an inactive Jazz fan because of December. Every team has their ups and downs and the jazz are goin up from here. Thanks for the awesome story.
Hi. THE JAZZ ARE THE BEST TEAM IN THE NBA, AND THEY ARE SO WINNING THE NBA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO DERON WILLIAMS!!!! GO KYLE KORVER!!!!!!!!!! GO CARLOS BOOZER!!!!!! GO MEMHET OKUR!!!!!!!! GO ANDREI KIRILENKO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Deron Williams should have been in the All Star game, and is WAY better than Chris Paul. Yep.
What a GAME!
Deron knew with premeditation exactly what he was going to do to his friend Paul and had him on the bench in 6 minutes! BTW; that was the very moment a Jazz victory was all but assured in my mind.
But the beating was really just getting started, and WOW did we get filled with highlite moments.
The whole team played in top form and only broke away from Jerry ball for a couple of minutes during a flurry of 3’s that caused the arena to all but explode with approval! (I’ve only one window to replace in the living room, acoustic damage is my claim)
Yeah we had this little place a rockin.
That is the kind of ball the JAZZ Boys need to play all the time. Dominant!
Game Day!
Go Jazz!
ha cp3 is a joke around derron
What a power statement that Derons Dunk made to the Jazz fans and the NBA. As a lifetime Jazz fan, that dunk was a little more special for another reason that was 15 years in the making. How many times did Jazz fans watch John Stockton just destroy defenders of the dribble or pick and have a clean look at the rim only to do a conservative high-percentage layup.
Personally I have yearned for Derons dunk on Monday night since I was 12. It a total release of pent up frustration from 15 years of magical, but humble, point guard play. Stockton was the best ever, but Deron, thank you, thank you, thank you
P.S. Deron, you take requests, a dunk every month or so would really ideal…
Deron Williams is just superb, no other way to describe him, Deron if your reading this keep it up bro. WE LOVE YOU HERE IN UTAH!
ps. def. an ALL STAR!
JAZZ ARE THE BEST AND DID YOU SEE DERON WILLIAMS DUNK IT WAS DOPE HE SHOULD BE AN ALLSTAR NOT BRANDON ROY OR CHRIS PAUL DERON HAS BETTER STATS THAN ROY ANYWAY AND HE GIVES MORE LEADERSHIP HE DESERVES IT WAY MORE THAN THEM JAZZ RULE. YOU SHOULD LIKE THE JAZZ AND IF YOU DON’T YOU WILL HAVE A HARD TIME SLEEPING FOR THE NEXT 2 WEEKS
I have been a Jazz fan since I moved here , Win or Lose , For those fair weather fans , How do you like them NOW Baby? Deron should have been an All Star ,NO Doubt . But he wasent chosen , He STOMPED the precious Chris Paul & the REST of the Hornets but He did’nt do it alone , He had the assistence of the Whole Team in that Awesome Defeat. To quote Criag Bolerjack ” Buckle Up ” This is going to be an Awsome Ride , I feel they have an Outstanding chance at the Semi Finals ,Once we reach that point we can speculate on the Championship ……….. I see The Jazz defeating Boston 4-3 ………… Lets HOPE my prediction comes true.
Thank you for the opportunity to voice my Love for an Outstanding Club.
Fantastic finish. I’m looking for a nice picture of that dunk for my desktop. (The picture here isn’t from that same shot). Has anyone found one? I can’t anywhere.
Tell me the truth. JASON HART IS SO BAD! GET RID OF HIM! THE JAZZ ARE SO MUCH BETTER WITH DERON AND RONNIE (PRICE) RUNNING THE FLOOR! PLEASE TELL ME IM NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT NOTICES HOW BAD JASON HART IS!?
I will see if I can find a Picture of the Power Dunk for you C
YOU SEE THE GAME YEA THATS RIGHT 118-115 WHOOOOOO OVERTIME ROCKING!!!!
Hey Alan. Keep up the great work. I really enjoy reading your Jazz blog. Your blog is the only one that really even makes sense.
I grew up a die-hard Jazz fan, during the Stockton-to-Malone era. Being from Alaska, I was ecstatic to hear that Boozer was dealt to Utah. Then when Williams came into his own, and in many was still is, it brings all those good memories of Utah’s prime years back to mind. Utah is one of the league’s youngest teams and for them to be this good, especially with the acquisition of Korver, I see Williams’ fingers being weighed down by the ring(s) they most certainly will win.
The Jazz should trade J-Hart, CJ, and Collins. I like the latter two, but we don’t need them. As for Hart, he is terrible. Ronnie should have the backup job over Hart any day of the week. Go D-Will your my hero man, you should be in top 10 for MVP.
Okay, I totally agree that Ronnie Price is a lot better point guard than Jason Hart. It honestly seems to me that the only reason Hart ever even comes in the game is to give Deron a rest, at least when Price goes in he tries to do something to help the team. Also, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Chris Paul is an amazing player, I mean look at his numbers, but I do believe that Williams should have been in the all-star game as well. And seriously, why can’t everyone just forget about who’s better than who? We just need to realize that they’re both great players and not worry about who’s better. That is one rivalry that I am looking forward to watching for many many years to come. Everyone knows that those two are THE future point guards of the NBA and they’ve both got one heck of a great career ahead of them! GO JAZZ!!!!!!!!
If you all remember, deron had a even more powerful dunk last year down the lane against a bigger, heavier guy. He rarely dunks and sometimes we might forget he can jump that high or have that much power, but just as are memory starts to fade, Deron totally refreshes It in spectacular ways. Nice work DERON NICE INDEED. We’ve got a better team than last year, what with Korver shooting so well. Now we’re spreading it all over the floor and no team knows what to do, especially cause Kirlenko is playing like an all star defensive player again, mind you shooting good as well. BIG THINGS THIS YEAR BIGGER THAN LAST!!!!!!!!!1
The only thing that bothers me is why Jason Hart is backing up Deron, am i taking crazy pills, or is Ronnie Price out performing him. Get him off the team, get hart the hell out of that spot. he pisses me off, and always takes the last second shot and misses, its so annoying!
This Jazz team is the best TEAM ever. John Stockton and Malone were great but this is the best TEAM. Lets make a trade get a big guy and go for the FINALS.
I agree about Deron needing to be on the All Star team but since I hate the All Star game and the show off that it has become, we can be glad that he won’t be there to get an injury!!!!!! Pardon me for using this for a personal request but I tried to email Ernest directly to talk about something that should not go in the blogs and the address is wrong.
YES!! Deron Williams is way better than Paul, all Paul is CP3 Deron Williams is D-Will and the best point guard in the league thats why the Jazz drafted him #3 not #4. The only reason Paul got on the All-Star team was because the game is in New Orleans. But anyways no matter what D-Will is the best and Paul SUCKS!!!
I totally agree with everyone. D-will should be an all-star, that dunk over tyson chandler should of put him in alone. And i like what A.K. is doing for the team. He is rebounding, blocking, and making baskets every game. This team will be a Championship many times in the future!
GO JAZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This really is the most complete team I believe I have ever seen since the dynasty Bulls teams of yesteryear. (Jordan, Pippen, Kerr, Rodman, Longley, Harper, etc). The difference is how YOUNG we are. This team could beat that team. I wish we could have that chance to see our team now beat the team that caused me years of frustration back then. Because our team now is complete and young and will only get better.
D-Will is amazing. Plain and simple. Kirilenko is the all around player that opponents dread. One of the best all around in the leauge. Boozer…wow. The addition of Kyle Korver has turned out to be a phenomenal choice. 17-2 since he got here. VERY impressive. Look for big things in the near future!
GO JAZZ!
Every source make disappointment in Jazz Basketball… I live in Hungary, and the national television makes very hard mistakes, they are against Jazz, because there are no movie stars here.. but we got the best TEAM in the NBA, last game against Nuggets Jazz bench outscored Nugs as near as 50 points:) I proud for the guys.. I think no matter how much game’ they win in a season.. I am just interested that they have faith and truth for Jazz, and they make it better for both us both them!! gooD-WIll and CB5 are JS12 and Malone’s reincarnation!! I hope Jazz will win its first NBA title, i am very proud to support this heartful, hard playing team!!
Utah Jazz will live forever!! Never dies!!! Jerry Slaon the best!! I love you all!!!!
Haha yeah I guess Kyle Korver can shoot the ball a little bit. But seriously, the Jazz are the real thing, Williams-Boozer is arguably the best duo in the NBA. With Korver and Okur on the outside and Kirilenko is one of the most versitile fowards in the league, they really are strong in every aspect of the game. They have much more depth then they did last year and the bench can compete with a lot of the starting fives in the western conference. Dont sleep on Utah this year, they’re even better than the westeron conference finals team from 06-07.
Glorydays you can’t be serious … i’m just as big of fan as anyone out there this team is not as good as the bulls (jordan, pippen, kerr, rodman.. ect.) one of the best teams in history … we are very good i have no problem seeing us winning a championship in the next within the next five years..
the only problem i see is that we NEED a back up PG i hate to admit it but the jazz need Fisher he would be awesome for us AND WHY IN THE NAME DIDN’T WE KEEP DEE BROWN ARRRGG!!! he’s got like 24.5 ppg. 11.2 apg. i think big numbers over in europe he is great……. and when HART steps on the floor our “O” goes down the drain we need a back up
however 07-08 champs
p.s. BOOZER NEVER HAVE AN 8 PIONT GAME LIKE LAST NIGHT VS. DENVER !!!
GO JAZZ!!!!!
AND derons dunk was just like hey CP sit down i’m the better player 7-1 vs. you this is my house and i’ll think i’ll jam it down this waste of height CHANDLER
BOOOOOOOOM!!!!
GO JAZZ1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I AGREE!!!!!!! WHERE IS DEE BROWN? The Jazzs’ back up point gaurd, BIG BIG BIG JASON HA HA HA HART IS NOT GOOD! If the Jazz had a really good back up pg, like Derek Fish, everygame would be either a blowout or a win. Jason just goes out there and plays like he is playing at a deacons churchball game! Get rid of him! GO JAZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sirnyeteg69
Hey we do we do!
Right now they are in Deer Valley breaking their legs!
Oh and don’t forget the Sundance Film festival, brings em all in!
For what it’s worth Wheeler, this team will not be playing that team.
We need a giant at center. Question is who and whats it gonna cost us to get one? Actually Fes needs to begin playing with the team and get ready for the real big boys we will be facing in the PO!
Smile for the photo Chris Paul and Tyson Chandler !!! We just need to trade Jason Hart, Jarron Collins and get a big man, improve the free trow % and boozer has to play like he is: one of the best PF in the league.
Go JAZZ!!!
First things first D. Fisher ( Fish ) did not want to stay, live or play in Utah it was his choice ( and family) to go back to the Lakers, end of story.
Second- get rid of ? trade for ? where is Utah going to find the money to buy better players ? Every year ticket price increase, beverage price increase and food price increase ( portions get smaller ), yet we still do not have the money to buy the big guys.. Does anyone remember when top upper bowl seats were $3.00, I don’t think the seats have got any better but the price has tripled + over the last 7 years.
Let’s try seeing it from the floor, give our team the “TRUE BLUE” fan support and stop with all the booing when other teams come on the floor or touch the ball. I’d love to see the reaction if our fans just sat silent when they went for a foul shot. or as they announce the players our fans give a moment of silence and them burst into cheer when they announce the Jazz players.
This team and went far beyond any of my expectations this year and I have been a fan here in Utah from way before any can remember……. I started when the Utah Stars came to town and have been faithful every year come win or loose.
This is once again our year lets cheer like we have never cheered before and help take our boys to the championship…….
Love ya guys
You’re reading way too into this. Maybe the reason Deron decided to dunk wasn’t the 8 billion reasons you gave, maybe it was because he knew Tyson was in foul trouble and couldn’t afford to foul. Deron didn’t even dunk over Tyson. Tyson STOOD not jumped under the basket coming from help side. It was a nice move to get by Paul and a very nice finish, but it wasn’t over Chandler. And you sound mad that Paul got to the all-star game and Deron didn’t. Maybe it’s because Paul deserves it more. It’s a joke he wasn’t voted in. He’s second in the league in assists, first in steals, and scores more than Deron. He carries more of the load for his team because his supporting cast isn’t as good. Deron may have deserved to be in the all-star game, but definitely not in place of CP. If anybody should have a chip on their shoulder it’s Paul. As you may have recalled he was picked AFTER Deron, because he’s too small. And as for Paul getting “torn up by Deron” he was in foul trouble the whole game. Here’s a stat. Hornet PG fouls: 11 Jazz PG fouls: 1. Discrempancy? It’s hard to play with the refs bending you over. And oh yeah it helps when you shoot 80% from 3. Hornets had more shots in the lane and less fouls called for them. You don’t see us disrespecting teams we kill (Suns, Spurs) on hornets.com so why disrespect the Hornets. It’s one win of 82 games. It was a good win now get over it and show some respect. Guess I was wrong. Good luck the rest of the year and I hope we see you in the playoffs. I’d love watching CP and D-West tear the jazz up.
Oh yeah i forgot. You want to see what a 6′3″ point guard dunking on someone looks like? Baron over Andrei. Deron didn’t dunk over Tyson.
Hey Alan please comment or e-mail me back. I’d love to hear your take on my comments.
Didn’t Dee Brown play with D-Will at Illinois?
That dunk was killer. D-Will schooled that game. Yeah, but we need to get rid of Hart and Collins. That’s true. They’re just not performing. I like Ronnie Price a lot better then Hart. I mean, Hart is OK, but I think Price can do a lot more for this team.
Hey NOK Domination: Don’t talk smack til the Hornets actually get past the second round!
Go Jazz! D-Will!
I agree, Ronnie Price needs to be playing back-up to Deron. Also, yes, as a 2nd round rookie, Dee Brown played back-up better than Hart. We should consider picking up Kevin Kruger from the Flash. He’s running the Jazz system for the Flash amazingly well. He’s great at finding the open man and can shoot like there’s no tomorrow if need be.
Man! I can’t believe that Chris Paul went to the All-Star Game and not Deron. I mean on Wednesday all he did is commit 5 fouls and make a couple of points.
I love Deron’s dunk. I was even more impressed with his play against Denver. He had ice in his veins in the fourth quarter and in overtime. I did not like how our front (AK, Boozer, and Okur) three handle the tough teams when it gets physical. They all seem to be finesse players that don’t seem to get physical enough when its needed. I like the toughness of Harpering and Deron - we need more of that especially if we make it deep into the playoffs. Go Jazz!
Best dunk!! for 2007-2008!
Ha that showed Chris Paul!
And if next year Deron doesn’t get All-Star position.
Dang what’s wrong with the NBA?
Well we still need to watch the other
game @ Hornets because we rock at home but
we have to see how we do at their stage.
the utah jazz are awesome….I am from utah and i live in texas…i cant get enuff of watching them play every chance i get…sure wish i could afford nba tv…i do take advantage of watching…mayb i can swindle some1 to given me a pair of tickets when utah plays the spurs here, haha…i do know one thing deron was definately snubbed from the all star game…utah has the the best bench in the nba,i still think utah should spread out the minutes a little more down the stretch to keep the whole team fresh for playoff time…and get some minutes,at least 15 minutes for morris almoad….does anyone else agree with evenly spreading the minutes out to keep the whole team healthy for a championship run..for as much talent the jazz have it would make sense.
hey all we should talk reggie miller out of retirement and really make a move for the finals…we do have a great team now to get there but lets make it even unnoticeable…haha
I think that derons dunk was the best dunk ever it was better then freakin stupid baron davis he is stupid i hate that guy…………and the jazz are going to win agian
i think that all the jazz need is one more player that can score and they will be the best team known to man jazz are the best team but go and trade someone like collins for a good shooter and you will win almost all the rest of your games
KEEP ON WINNING JAZZ YOU GUYS ARE AEWSOME
Reply to NOK Domination: Just for the record I love Chris Paul. In fact I had my doubts when the Jazz first picked Deron Williams over Chris Paul. I have since loved watching Williams play and feel that he is an incredible player. I have been amazed at how well the Hornets have played and how fast Paul has brought them up to be one of the top teams in the league. I think both players will win championships in the near future. I know that Paul scores a little more and dishes out a few more assists but my whole point was that in head-to-head match-ups Williams gets fired up and seems to be able to play him very well. I am not sure if any other point guards have outplayed Paul but Williams has done a great job. I think Paul should be on the All-Star team and I think Williams had a slow start to the season and is just making his case now and I think he should have got the pick over Brandon Roy.
In regards to the Paul getting in foul trouble, Williams said in post-game interviews that it was his whole plan to get Paul in foul trouble. Especially after the first early foul he went at him extra hard and did get the calls. I can’t speak for all other Jazz fans but I have no disrespect for the Hornets and they have had a great season so far. However I too would love to see the Jazz-Hornets in the play-offs.
In regards to Williams dunking on Chandler, one can get dunked on without physically getting hit with the ball. Chandler was standing there guarding the basket and Williams dunked hard. Thanks for your comments
Reply to those who think that the current Jazz team are now the “Best Team Ever”: I hope you still feel that way when they lose a few games. This team is looking better all the time but to say that they are better than the Bulls teams that won 6 titles might be a bit of a stretch. Maybe when we win our 7th title we can have that conversation.
Deron Williams is so much better than Chris Paul!
Hahaha!! I didnt find this feed till what, a week after the fact, but that dunk was AWESOME!!!! i’ve never seen anything so cool! price over boozer (jazz@kings last year) was cool, but i’ve never seen more of a statement dunk that that of our man D-Will!!! and for all you jazz-bandwagoners, dont jump off cuz the jazz had a rough december, but dont call yourselves lifelong jazz fans. that sucks.
Go JAZZ!!!!
deron is the best at goung over the taller than the smaller playersthat is awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i’m sad that they lost there first game in a while but i think they’ll get an other winning streak
JAZZ ARE AWESOME!!!!
YOUGUYSARETHEBEST!!!!!
If someone has a seat close to Jerry Sloan please let him know that Hart HAS TO GO!!!! He shouldn’t even be playing in the D-league. Price is way better. I went to school with Price and watched him play for 4 years. If Sloan will give him a chance Price can be amazing. Daren is UNBELIEVABLE but he can’t play the whole game. When Sloan puts Hart in to give Williams a break it’s like putting in a 6th player for the other team. We need a good back up for Williams going into the playoffs and Price is the man (Hart’s missed shots and turnovers will kill us in the playoffs). Come on Sloan play price and let’s win the title.
Deron’s dunk was great, and what a move around Paul. Don’t exaggerate too much though, or else people will exaggerate about your exaggeration!
Kyle Korver has turned out to be a phenomenal choice. 17-2 with him on the team and we got a 1st round pick for him what a steal. Im thinking semi finals again the JAZZ need to just keep opening that same CAN of WHOP_SS ever game on all the teams. If you really want to start making a statement to league you hosed don’t bother opening that CAN WHOP_SS and start beating team by 20pts or more. d will should have gone to that all-star game instead they forced kobe bryant to play and he playes 10 minutes and doesnt come out after halftime why. d will should been have an all-star over him, kobe didnt even want to go and commissioner forces him to go why guys why. If I was D Will id be so mad and let my game do the talking.
All I can say is that Deron Willams should’ve been in the All-Star game. Seriously, haven’t people noticed how AMAZING he is?
“Go Jazz”, thay are for sure one of the top 5 teams in the nba. As for Deron not making the allstar team,im sorry D but i agree with Melissa, if not making the team makes you play like you have been Paul will have my vote next year too.J/K But one thing is for sure Larry Miller has got some of the best guys in the buisness building this team and thay have really steped up and done their homework on all thease guys. Thay have the potential to be the “Champ’s” this year more then any i do belive but can thay Claim homecort, get past their nemisis the San Antonio Spurs. ill be glued to the tv till then.
I LOVE WHEN DERON DUNKS IT LOVE IT I LOVE TO WATCH THE JAZZ GAMES ALL THE TIME AND I LOVE WATCHING DERON
I love Daron Williams! Well, I do and don’t care how he is playing. It is just I love him. He has the Cutest smile. It’s not just he is a CELEBERITY!!! Its just……. I don’t know!! But I love watching him play!!!! Daron was not in all star… Very Sad!!!!
But he is a hero anyways!!!!
Jazz lost on Saturday!! Big loss!!!
But
Jazz is awesome!!! I think they are the best!!!
East or West!!!
Jazz is the Best!
i need to find a screen saver with good things like that dunk
jazzrule….On the official page for the Jazz there are some screen savers
O.K. its plain to see that the jazz only get national media attention in the later rounds after beating up on chump first round match ups. Chris Paul is in no way the leader that Deron is. I wouldn’t trade Daron for any point guard. Sloan said Deron has the highest basketball I.Q. out of any one he has coached.(even stockton.) I grew up loving the Stockton and Malone teams, but my love for the jazz has grown the last 3 years. I think even with all the tatts our team has more class then any team in the NBA. In this day and age that is why we will win a championship soon. Sloan in my book is the coach of the year. And kobe is the ball hog of the year. Chris Paul is the over rated hyped up over confedent posser of the year. Garnet is on the best team but next year they will be back in the lottery. I was at game 3 of the western conferance finals last year we killed the team (the spurs) by thirty, who went on to sweep king james and the cavs. I agree with deshaun stevenson he is over rated. If the rest of the country stays in a haze and never see’s why our home court is the ultimate home court advantage we will win a championship this year. you see there is a reason Jazz fans are so load its cuz we want to see D W dunk over seven footers and shake of smaller faster point guards with ankle braking moves.
