Chris Paul vs. Deron Williams

Chris Paul doesn’t suck. He is an amazing player. It’s really that simple, yet Jazz fans continuously try to say that he does “suck” every chance they get. I get it. I understand. As Jazz fans – we are strongly biased and we support our boy. As a community of fans – we love Deron Williams. Of course it helps that Deron Williams is an All-Star caliber player. That said Chris Paul is not just an All-Star caliber player – he is an All-Star, and he deserves every minute he is going to play in the game.

Forget the fact that the game is in New Orleans. Which is the ultimate tie breaker – you go with the home town boy to play in front of the few home town fans that work their way in to the game. When the NBA brought the All-Star game to Utah, Karl Malone and John Stockton shared the MVP honor. “Home cookin” does count for something. However location withstanding, Paul deserves to be there on his merits. If you want to argue that Deron Williams should be there too – argue he should be there next to Chris Paul – not there instead of Chris Paul.

Sure Chris Paul had a rough night against Deron Williams a few nights ago. It’s fair to say Deron worked him over good. But Paul bounced back by beating Nash and the Suns with 42 points, 9 Assists, and 8 steals (with only 1 turn over). Everyone has a bad game once in a while and statistically it’s close in every category. Both players are filling out the stat sheet at an All-Star level.

Unfortunately for Williams though - when the coaches voted for reserves to the All-Star game – the Hornets were in first place in the West and the Jazz were struggling to regain playoff relevancy. That has to figure in when you are voting on the team leader. The Jazz win streak was in its infancy. The latest Williams Vs Paul matchup hadn’t been played. At that time, I too would have voted for Chris Paul.

Beyond the All-Star game this rivalry goes deeper. These two are phenomenal players. Because of their position and where they were drafted they will be forever linked in debate as to who is better. The majority of Jazz fans will always take Williams over Paul. If you are one of those fans – do just that. Put Williams over Paul – don’t rip Paul below Williams. They are both gifted players. They both are hard workers and incredible leaders. When you lower one, you lower the other. I am not saying you have to love Chris Paul – but you should respect him. After all you know Deron Williams does.

I agree that they are both good players, but one has been to the playoffs, won two playoff series, and pretty much has owned the head to head battle for 2+ years. Paul doesn’t suck, but Williams is better. Bottom line, Williams should be in the all-star game over Paul. If they both have to be there, they should be there instead of AI, who was voted in by the fans.

Williams better for me. But actually both players have their own specialty.
So I wouldn’t say who is better but they both rock

I would personally take Williams over Paul for these reasons:

Deron is bigger, will last longer, can take more punishment, plays better defense, and is a better shooter.

That being said, CP has had a better season and leads or is very close to Deron in all statistical categories othan than 3 point percentage. CP deserves the All-Star game over Deron because his team had a better record and his stats are better. However, DW OWNS CP in head-to-head matches, but than really doesn’t mean anything at the end of the season. Is Deron an All-Star? Yes, but there’s not enough room for him this year (unless they decide not to let the fans vote. It’s somewhat a popularity contest and we know that players in Utah will most likely NOT get voted in by fans. That something we all just have to accept. I’d like to see the NBA have ONLY the Coaches vote for the All-Stars one year.).

Anyway, I’d still take Deron over CP and there’s a lot to be said about how Deron took on and dominated Baron Davis last year in the playoffs. If you haven’t heard what BD thinks about Deron then I encourage your to do some searching online.

To summarize, I think Chris Paul is definitely worthy of being an All-Star this year and deserves it. He’s having a better season so far than Deron. However, I do NOT believe that stats alone make a player better than another. I would still take Deron over CP today, tomorrow, and probably always. Deron also deserves to be in New Orleans this year, but he’ll just have to wait til next year. I’d be willing to bet than CP would give up the All-Star game for a trip to the WC Finals!

    DW over CP!

so Paul is really good. But the reason his stats are so much better is because his team isn’t there like the Jazz are for Williams. Williams doesn’t have to do it all himself. The Jazz is a much more balanced team than the Hornets, look as five of our guys score more than ten in a game. Williams won’t get the recognition Paul will, for now, but as time goes on, and as players switch hands we’ll see how Williams leads but doesn’t carry the team.

chris paul is much better than deron williams. he is leading a team with just him, david west and peja to the Western Conference finals. i mean dont get me wrong i think deron is the 2nd best PG in the league, but right now you can’t say hes better. Utah has Boozer, AK47, Kyle Korver and Mehmet Okur, AND Ronnie Brewer on a good day (who is getting better and better). CP3 has D-West and Peja. Chandler is only good because of Paul. He is better in every aspect of the game except 3 pointers, which doesnt matter because he is better at driving to the basket than Deron anyway. Once again dont get me wrong, Deron is a great pointguard, but he is no Chris Paul.

    Hey Mike,

Thanks for the comments. Paul is a stud. The argument closes up a little though when you consider that Williams is more efficent (a better shooter) and he destroys Paul head to head.
