Trade Value

It didn’t surprise me that the Jazz didn’t make a move at the trade deadline. They had already made a very successful deal to bring in Kyle Korver, and realistically they don’t have a lot of tradable assets.

If you consider that the Jazz are (arguably) the hottest team in the league – you wouldn’t want to trade the core group of players away unless you were positive you would be better in return. Williams and Boozer are untouchable. Sure a trade offer for Lebron James or Dwight Howard and his Superman Cape might turn some heads in the front office, but it’s not practical. It’s never going to happen. Adding in the success the Jazz have had since the turn of the New Year and you can assume that trade conversations about Brewer, Kirilenko, Okur, Millsap, and Harpring, didn’t garner huge attention spans.

What’s left is what the Jazz had to work with. There is just not a lot that could have been done to improve the team further.

Collins – The general fan consensus is that Collins is a bum and should be traded for anything they can get. Anything. Truth be told, the Jazz probably could get a lot of players for Collins. Just, no one good. No one tall. No one is going to give up a star for someone who would be coming off the bench for their team. You have to remember Collins is the 10th man on the roster. Unless he is the 11th or 12th. Either way he adds depth and height when needed to an above average bench. How good does your 10th guy need to be? Even if the Jazz were able to bring in a guy perceptibly twice as good as Collins – whose minutes are you going to take away so that guy can play? Trading Collins isn’t going to help the team. He is as good as a 10th to 12th man/role player as you are going to find anywhere in the league.

Miles – CJ has had an up and down run – but it’s most likely going to come to an end at the end of the season. For what he has shown – no one seems to want to take a risk on him. He may very well end up being a serviceable player in the NBA – but probably at the Small Forward. A trade with CJ involved would have looked like the Gerald Green for Kirk Snyder trade. It would be insignificant and buried on page 6.

Price or Hart – Price certainly has more upside – especially if he can be consistent at backup point guard. He is explosive. But his contract is heavy and he is not in the last year. Expiring contracts are worth a little more in trade value. You probably could have moved either Hart or Price for Von Wafer and a second round pick. But it would not have helped the team. In this case, teams would probably rather just go fish in the D-league.

Almond and Fes – For the Jazz it’s like having two future first round draft picks that might be climbing into the lottery range. Letting them improve in the D-league should have them thinking “Kirilenko Part II.” The Jazz are going to look at these guys with high hopes – see their potential and want a lot of value in return because the return could be big. Problem is, in the NBA – most teams will look at them as late first round draft picks and see more chance of mediocrity and failure then upside. At least when trading for them. It’s too bad it’s not Major League Baseball. The prospects of Almond and Fes could be traded for a starting pitcher.

Jazz draft picks – This season’s pick is tradable but it’s looking like its going to be late first round. That’s not appealing by itself. The next several years will be hard to trade due to the Jazz owing the Sixers a pick. The language would be hard to work out in a pinch (trade deadline) and the fact that the Jazz are winning would make the perceived value really low.

The Knick Pick – This is the biggest asset the Jazz had (have) in trade talks. After all it looks like the Knicks are going to be bad for years to come. This could be a top 5 pick in 2010. If the Jazz work an offseason deal – this might be the center piece. The closer it gets – the more valuable it looks.

All in all – the Jazz pulled off an amazing trade to get Korver. You have to respect that and consider this “trade season” a success. I wonder what will happen in the offseason. Let the speculation begin, now.

Obviously based on my name I’m a huge supporter of the Kyle Korver trade. He’s really high energy, not afraid to shoot and I think he opens up the floor for our big guys because the other teams know he’s not afraid to shoot, and make 3 pointers. But after watching us lose to the Clippers tonight I think we all know we need someone else if we really want to make a push for a championship. Sure we’ll never get LeBron or Superman, but I just watched Al Thornton come off the bench and man-handle us as a rookie. I would love someone like that on our team. Not to mention I loved the way Corey Maggette played, he’s a baller too….. Man I wish we had someone like that to spark our team, another weapon in our arsenal….. Oh wait, we do, but we’ve stuck him in the D-League, his names Morris Almond. I’ve actually gone and watched him play. He poured in 53 one game and had about 30 the night I watched with the other team guarding him like he was Kobe Bryant all game! This guys probably as good a shooter as K Korv, but he’s probably twice as athletic. I honestly think the Jazz are hurting themselves by having one of their best players in the D-League. Al Thornton’s having a great year for the Clippers, Mo Al should be doing the same for us. I’m pretty sure thats why we drafted him…. right?
One more thing…. our announcers on KJZZ tonight said something while calling the game that caught my attention. The few times that Ronnie Brewer shot the ball our announcers said, “Brewer kicks and fires.” Now being an athlete myself I know that “kicks and fires” is something an announcer should say at a baseball game when a pitcher lifts his leg and throws to home plate. The fact that they instinctively say that when Ronnie shoots fully illustrates how ugly his jumper is. Maybe I’m just bitter at the Jazz loss tonight, but I think Almond should be getting Brewers minutes…. he’s just as good an athlete, but his shot is much more pure. Is there anyone else who wants to jump on the Mo Al bandwagon? He’d be a shot of life this team could use coming down the stretch and another legitimate threat.

Just a few observations from the game tonight. First of all, Carlos “C-Bizkit” Boozer is defineatly our HORSE, yes a pun was intended. Second of all, Deron Williams is an unbelievable floor GENERAL. I just hope that he doesn’t deside to run for president because the secret service would have trouble guarding him. I am starting to take a liking to Millsap and Harpring, the both play with alot of emotion and fire off the bench. K-Korv is a like jumbo sized Red Bull when he enters the game, a whole bunch of energy with such an accurate shot that it would make a sniper in envious. I know it is only half way through the year but I am going to give out top ALL-A-HAIRican honors to AK. I am glad you have game because WOW! Okur and Brewer can go, there a dime a dozen. We are the only basketball team in the history of basketball to have a seven footer never enter the paint during a full season. He needs to quit shooting. That brings me to my next point, R-Brewer’s shot is the brokest shot in the history of the game. It is so bad that everytime he throws up a shot, thats what I do, THROW UP! We need a quality shooter other than K-Korv. Morris Almond is our solution. Give the young gun a chance. Give him 10 games with 25 minutes a game and a green light to shoot. We as JAZZ fans will not be dissappointed. He was a first-round pick last year for crying out loud. Put him in the league!!! I would be willing to wager my house(not real nice and could fit in Sloanies garage) that we are the only team in the NBA that has our 07 first rounder in the D-League. That is just some random thoughts that I had after tonights not so fabulous proformance. Please feel free to comment on anything your agree with or disagree. C-Bizkit out!

I say send Mo to the NBA and J. Hart to the D League. If Fisher would have stuck around we would be championship worthy.
