Deron and the Suns
I met up with Deron Williams this summer in Las Vegas when he was running with Team USA. I had talked with D-Will for several minutes, when his face lit up. Literally. A camera crew from Phoenix wanted to ask him a few questions as well. After I finished my questions I yielded to the reporter from Phoenix as a larger crowd of media gathered around.
“Deron” he began “How do you like playing with Amare Stoudomire?”
Deron went on to answer that Amare is a good player with a bright future and that he hustles etc.
“Do you like Coach D’Antoni?” The repoter asked.
Deron told him he likes D’Antoni and all of the coaching staff. They are Legends after all.
“Do you like playing in the offense? You know it’s D’Antoni’s offense.”
I couldn’t believe where this was going. Were they actually trying to get him to openly flirt with the Suns? What about the Jazz? What about Nash?
“I like the offense” Deron began “I think it’s suited to my style of play.” At this point I am feeling uncomfortable. If it wasn’t for the larger crowd of international media around us I would have tried to sneak away. Apparently it’s a Suns love fest going down. Deron included. I may be the odd man out. “Besides” says Deron after a pause “next time I play the Suns – I will know what to expect and how to beat them.”
I liked the turn the conversation had made. The Jazz are 1-1 vs the Suns so far this year. Here is to hoping Deron can put a little of that knowledge to use tonight.
