Old Time Radio

Remember when Jack Benny was still only 39, The Whistler would send chills down your spine, The Shadow had that fiendish laugh, Amos ‘n’ Andy would play tricks on The Kingfish, Superman was faster than a speeding bullet and Gunsmoke’s Marshall Dillon, Miss Kitty and Festus tamed Dodge City?
Of course you don’t. Not unless you’re an old codger!
When I was 5-10 years old, before TV had really invaded our living rooms, we would gather around the old Zenith and listen to the half hour dramas on the radio. We would use our mind to picture the scene, reenacting the emotion and suspense. Where is my decoder ring?
Unless you download some old time radio MP3’s on your iPod, those days are long gone…or are they.
Because of the Jazz’ light home schedule, before the All-Star break, we scheduled a trip to Guatemala and Honduras. I know, I can hear all of you crying “poor baby.” Well, talk about all the hardships the pioneers endured, we were in Central America with no KJZZ or FoxSports Utah! Yes! Now I’ll bet that softened your hearts.
But we made some discoveries. Big Surprise! Most of the backwater hotels, which were not deluxe resorts, had Wi-Fi connections. We would fire up the laptop, and go to www.nba.com, click on the game, log onto “listen live” and there would be Hot Rod calling the game. I’m sure you probably heard us back here in Salt Lake, when ‘Kal Kover’ buried 3 threes in a row to break the game wide open. Yo-yo dribbles, hamma’ dunks and the cowhide globe hits home. We were all huddled around the old Zenith Radio (the computer) again, listening to the master paint the picture with his commentary.

OLD CODGER!!!!!!!!!! Be careful there. That was our great Friday and Saturday nights with the shows you mentioned. The squeaking door on intersanktum (sp) was equal to the Jazz behind 1 point and 2 seconds to go with our player at the foul line. I have big tears at your being away while I still have 2 feet of snow in my yard but I understand the withdrawal. Before they got the TV stations worked out here in Idaho that is the way I use to watch the games. The saying is true that all comes to those who wait. After Saturday’s game I get to use my son’s tickets to the rest of the games!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m a first time blogger and remember watching or listening to Jazz games.
I’m raised in Northern Ut and haven’t even been to a single Jazz game in the ESA yet. ( I know shame on me). It is better to ask for forgiveness then permission right?
I’m looking forward to my first Jazz game in the Energy Solutions Arena.

I just started a new job, swing shift, only semi challenge. Worst part is I no longer get to watch the Jazz play as much, but we do have a Radio and a local station that carries the broadcasts! Thank Goodness!
We also use the computer to track other good games going on across the league. It’s pretty entertaining listening to some of the other radio hosts from the teams.
Hot Rod does a pretty good job, still today.
