KJZZ HD A Work In Progress

First, let me compliment the Jazz for making the investment to upgrade their broadcast system to HD. I’m not sure what the exact figure is, but I can imagine it was not an inexpensive endeavor. That being said the game against Houston, the first broadcast in HD was far from perfect. I consider myself to be an HD snob/connoisseur and thus I am rather critical of the HD content I consume. In an attempt to provide some feedback from the end user here is my list of things I would like to see tweaked:

1- Clarity and consistency: When they switched to the close up shots, the picture looked really good. It was much more clear and vibrant. However, when they switched to the wide angle, it was not that clear. It was much better than a normal KJZZ broadcast, but not nearly as clear as what you see on TNT and ESPN. There also seemed to be a problem with the color contrast. The darks were way to dark.

2- Skipping/Jumping: This issue was actually fixed early in the 1st quarter, so kudos to the technical staff working the game. Before it was fixed the picture would jump and skip every 10 seconds or so.

As with anything new, there will always be bugs to iron out. KJZZ HD is no exception. Overall I think KJZZ did a good job their first time around the HD block. I also think it was a brilliant decision to roll our the HD before the playoffs start. Now the crew behind this will have time to iron out all of the kinks before the most important games begin. I for one am pumped. Once everything is worked out, watching Jazz games on KJZZ is going to be re-dunkulously awesome. I can’t wait.

There are 200+ translators of the Salt Lake area TV stations carrying free, over-the-air Digital TV right now. They all come from the same locations as your current analog stations, and are simulcast on UHF-only frequencies….so, you might only need to upgrade to a UHF antenna (in areas where the analog was all VHF).

At least 3/4 of the state will be operational with 9 DTV stations (18 channels of programming, 8 in HDTV) by the end of the summer.

We couldn’t seem to get it with DirecTV, and no longer have a regular antenna. Any ideas?

All Jazz playoff games that KJZZ is granted permission by the NBA to televise locally during the 2008 NBA Playoffs will be shown in HD. Comcast has agreed to carry the KJZZ HD signal on Channel 657.

Customers of DirecTV and Dish Network may still pick up the KJZZ HD signal by using a regular rooftop antenna (or rabbit ears) depending upon your proximity and line-of-sight to the Wasatch front broadcast towers on Farnsworth Peak (the TV towers you can see on top of the Oquirrh mountain range on the west side of Salt Lake Valley. The towers are located due west from about 4800 South). Those that have an HD-Ready television can get the KJZZ HD signal on channel 14-1 through a home antenna.

If you are considering purchasing a rooftop antenna, here is a handy website to help you get the right size antenna and how to aim it. Just enter in your home address, and it will tell you everything you need.

We hope you enjoy watching the Jazz Playoff games in HD!

We, in Idaho, are always a little behind Utah. In order to get the HD here we would have to give up KJAZZ and FSN Utah. Maybe if we complain enough they will get with it in Lava Hot Springs!

Game 2 – This game looked great in HD, however, it still skipped/jumped every 15 seconds… was worse towards the end. My signal strength was at Max, and this is the only channel that does it. It also does this on non-HD content, ever since the HD upgrade. Anyone experiencing the same issues? Anyone know when it will be fixed?

I’m glad to find that people are having the jumpiness in KJZZ HD. I thought it might have been my equipment. Last night’s game ( Game 3 vs. Lakers ) was my first attempt at HD, and it jumped every 10 seconds or so. I was afraid it was something in my computer ( I’m capturing HD using Windows XP Media Center 2005 and an ATSC tuner with a UHF antenna. Other HD content I checked out today did not have the skipping issue, so I’m just going to have to hope that KJZZ is able to work out their issue. Thanks for this post so I know it’s not an issue on my end.
