Winners and Whiners

‘Called Out?’ (Melissa Majchrzak - NBAE/Getty Images)
Two coaches I’d consider WINNERS are The Spur’s“Pops” and our very own Jerry Sloan. They are both stand up guys, with no excuses. They give credit to the other teams and don’t whine when they lose. They frequently, and sincerely, take the blame themselves.
I haven’t seen many interviews with Leastern Conference coaches over the years, with the exception of the Jazz two finals appearances against ‘Dr. Pill’ and his Laker’s stint. It used to be that Dr. Pill would just sit and look wise, while MJ, Kobe or Shaq won almost all their games. When the Jazz started beating the Bulls with some frequency, the real Dr. Pill would start to whine. Dr. Pill not only whined, but he would disparage opposition players, teams, arenas, cities and cultures. Sure, his superstars have won him multiple championship rings, but a “winner?” NO A WHINER!
Which brings me to the newest WHINER. Welcome sweet little Rickey Adelman to the fraternity of WHINERS. Could someone find his pacifier? Lots of excuses and little credit. Finger pointing without assuming any blame. Suck it up and interview like a man! Quit blaming everyone else for a loss. TiVo some of Jerry Sloan’s or Pop’s interviews after a loss. It’s obviously spilling over into some of his players, like T-Mac. However, not all the rockets are WHINERS. Shane Battier, for example, interviews like he plays, with no excuses. Too bad his coach and T-Mac can’t follow his example.
There! I’m done with my whining, where’s my bankie? I’m ready for my Binkie and a napie.

“Harder cuts and moving make it more apparent to the officials,” Adelman said. Hummm.
“Make it more apparent to the officials” = FLOP!

I think that sloan gets his teams to the finals, but is unable to coach them through the tough things finals bring. He has the players, even if they are young for the most part. But he needs to look at himself with the same eyes he uses to pick apart his players.
The Jazz team needs to find a coach the players can look up too, not the angry, foul mouthed fault finding coach they fear. He makes them too tense and unsure of themselves.
My complaints about coach sloan are often edited, and the message I try to convey is altered by that action. If, as a blog person all we can do is praise people, then this program is a farce and the people running it are not allowing us to use freedom of speach, let alone give real comments.
Thanks or Not

Ernest,
Thanks for your note. Really. And thanks for being better about writing things we can share. You know what I’m talking about.
I’ll go over this again - please do not confuse our moderation with
censorship. We respect all opinions here. We live in a world of spammers and $%^&’s that are not interested in the conversation, rather the disruption of it. This is the main reason Jazzbots is moderated.
We never change the essence of an opinion here. Maybe a spelling error, (we left yours in this time) but never the essence. In your case we do not allow personal attacks - which is why we sometimes have to sanitize your posts. The crazy thing is you are guilty of the same things you accuse Jerry Sloan of.
On a positive note - as you look around pro sports notice one great thing happening with the Jazz. This is the only organization that is sharing an official platform with fans. The authors were chosen from the fan base. The conversation is as authentic as it can be. The voice of the fan is celebrated here. Including yours Ernest, as regular readers certainly know how you feel about Jerry Sloan.
Derrick
To Derrick and to all bloggers,
Thanks for putting my message on the site. Often I have spelling errors in things I type, some are even planned.
I shall try in the future to keep most of my comments, more positive, by not mentioning sloan, in my messages.
Make no mistake I am really a Jazz fan who respects the players and enjoys watching them!
I have even ask for the opportunity to audition for the singing of The National Anthem, but have not received any reply.
I will also work on my spelling, I was not a great speller in school let alone 40 some years later.
Thanks again.
Go Jazz,———–Friday is the day!!!!!!!

Ernest, keep an eye on the Utah Jazz website, where they usually announce when the auditions for singing will be. I’m not exactly sure when they are, but it seems they are about a month or so before the first preseason games. The announcements are posted during the summer. They have been open auditions in the past. By the way, my last post about Tracy McGrady wasn’t exactly positive, of course I paid for it by being criticized by a Houston fan!!!
Annie Whittaker, thanks for the support.
Speaking of Tracy McGrady, am I wrong or is he protected quite heavily by the officials, during games?!!!
Seems like he gets some very questionable(possible spelling error),
opportunities to shoot foul shots, while other players, (usually on the opposing team) are knocked to the floor, poked in the face, slapped on the arm, bodily hammered, and they do not get a foul called in their favor.
My question is- Does the NBA ever watch reruns of games to check to see that officials are not being favorable to certain players or certain teams? I know last year there was a problem. But didn’t hear much after the announcement of that officials being bought.
Why do veteran players get so many breaks and younger players in the league get called for so many fouls that are not as bad as the seasoned player?
Seems officials have a code all their own. Am I out of line, or just parcial to the Jazz?
I would be interested to hear any others that have questions about officiating(possibly another spelling error),
Thanks to all
Ernest Monson
Ernest:
There is no question that superstars get preferential treatment on fouls. Also, veterans get away with more than rockies. That being said, I don’t think the refs are trying to change the outcome, it’s just hard to see everything on the fly.
Some players, like A I, Manu or Kobe are able to draw fouls at will.
I feel that the player causing the contact should get the foul, but officiating favors the offensive player.
