My Take: Lakers Take Game 1

FINAL SCORE –  LAKERS 109 JAZZ 98
Phil Jackson is 39-0 when he wins the first game of a playoff series.
Jazz hit just 4 of their first 23 shots in the quarter
Jazz got very little on the offensive end from Deron or Carlos
Kobe was great.  He played within the team and created for others and had 38 points.
Kyle Korver had a bad quarter for the Jazz - he hit a three but he missed 4 shots of set plays
The Lakers are not guarding Brewer at  all and he can’t knock down the shot
The Jazz battled but they didn’t play well or play very smart.
Kobe played inside the game and still was dominate.  He didn’t hit shots in the 4th quarter but was able to create for everyone else.
Defensively the Jazz kept the Lakers under their season average offensively but the Jazz were unable to keep their offense at the regular rate.

4:45 4th Quarter — Lakers 91 Jazz 87
7-0 run with a Korver 3
Kobe has missed 3 in a row.  Gasol is doing nothing

8:45 4th Quarter — Lakers 83 Jazz 74
Jazz first 7 shots of the quarter are 2 misses by Korver and then Harpring took the next 5 and hit only 1.  Who are the go to guys. This is absurd
Boozer has done a nice job on Odom.
Kobe on the bench,.
Jazz shooting free throws on every foul the rest of the way.

End of 3rd Quarter — Lakers 79 Jazz 72
jazz scored on all but 5 possessions in the quarter. It was a 31 point quarter.
If the Jazz execute plays and move the ball they will be able to score.
Still some bad decisions that prevented the comeback from being bigger.
If the Jazz can make it tight let’s see what Gasol does
Bad fast break turnover by Deron and bad shot selection by Ronnie Brewer leave some questions.
No Ronnie Price,

5:28 3rd Quarter — Lakers 68 Jazz 58
Jazz are on a 9-0 run
Not sure if ABC is covering the game or just doing a MVP celebration
When the Jazz run a play they are able to get a good look, they are just doing it rarely.
Deron can’t get his offensive game going.
the lakers play defense with 10 feet in the paint, it is impressive.

Halftime — Lakers 54 Jazz 41
Very very poor 2nd Quarter
The Jazz have no focus at all offensively.  They had at least 6 possessions of 1 pass.
They are not running sets or trying to get looks via cutters or anything of that sort
Boozer has been very poor after the first 4 minutes.  I have him with 6 turnovers.
The transition defense which has been a problem all year on the road is a problem today as well.
13 Lakers points off transition in the 2nd Quarter.
D-WIll and Boozer are a combined 5 of 17.

6:47 2nd Quarter — Lakers 41 Jazz 28
Awful 2nd Quarter
Boozer commits two more turnovers that lead to baskets
The Jazz become jump shot Johnnies and take poor 17 footers with no effort to execute an offense.
Korver and D-Will double Gasol at the same time so Sasha is wide open for three
Sasha gets another three when Harpring falls and when he goes back he doesn’t go to his new man leaving Sasha open.
Kobe has 20.

End of 1st Quarter — Lakers 25 Jazz 24
Solid 1st quarter
Kobe is getting to the line, 6 times in the first quarter
Boozer has three bad lazy turovers
AK was very active in the first quarter.
Both of these teams are great passing teams.

5:40 1st Quarter — Jazz 13 Lakers 13
You can tell this series is going to be offensive oriented.
Gasol 2 fouls at the 6:33 mark with the Lakers leading 13-10.
Lakers went a 9-0 run.
Boozer took it right at Gasol to get the foul.
Huge play Boozer gets bucket and #2 on Gasol, misses free throw and Jazz rebound and get another bucket.
Fischer is penetrating and hitting Gasol

Keys to Game 1
1)  Bring the physical play of the Rockets series the Lakers haven’t seen that yet
2)  Not get beat by Vucajic, Fischer and Farmar
3)  Brewer and AK get easy baskets off Kobe free lancing
4)  Boozer win the match-up with Gasol
5)  Handle the dribble penetration of Lamar Odom
6)  Defensively handle the second pass, the Lakers are brilliant making the extra pass

Officials
Joey Crawford (30 years and 266 playoff games)
Ron Garretson (20 years and 161 playoff games)
Jimmy Clark (19 years and 89 playoff games)

Matt Harpring and Kyle Korver need to step it up. They are kiling us with their lack of effort. They are not bringing anything to the table except so many missed shots. Matt has been playing like its his first day in the NBA.

Kyle: How about playing some defense? Being cute is wearing off. We need some talent to back that up.

As a fan with an opinion, these two guys have dropped the ball so far in both series. They have be no help to our starters.

I know we can win it all if everyone steps up and earns their paycheck.

    Lets go Jazz!

You’re not kidding about ABC. I couldn’t believe how ridiculous it got during the game. That interview with Magic Johnson lasted for like 3 minutes and they were constantly putting the cameras on that putz Jack Nicholson and the other movie stars at the game. It was horrible. Let’s just watch the game and quit gawking at these hollywood idiots.

Vagiz on May 5th, 2008 said...

Okur and Kirilenko played well. I am especially impressed with Okur, even though he couldn’t make any three-pointers this game but still he made an effort defensively and on the boards offensively.
Millsap played without aggression as well as Williams. Maybe they were just tired from previous series. Well, then they have a chance to prove it on Wednesday.
Korver, Harpring and Brewer missed so many wide open shots, it’s embarassing.
But the biggest disappointment was Boozer. What are all those stupid turnovers? He was just giving the ball to the opponents for an easy transition bucket.
I’m just hoping that they will realize tehir mistakes, regroup and play with more patience and aggression.

Linda McFarland on May 5th, 2008 said...

I agree with the gawking at movie stars. I only know one or two and I never have liked Nicholson! I agree that most of the players need to step it up for the next game. In an interview with D-Will last evening he said that he felt he could play much much better than he did. I agree that I hoped for more points from Kyle but don’t they realize that he shoots much better on a quick release rather than a set up and shoot? Many times he is out there alone for his kind of shot and never gets the ball. I think we will see a better game from the Jazz Tuesday but one problem is that they are suppose to present Kobe with MVP before the game and I think that will light him up even more. GO JAZZ I AM BEHIND YOU NO MATTER WHAT.

justalars on May 5th, 2008 said...

they’ll be ok. D-will had a horrible shooting game and we still were with in 4 with 4 min.left. We do need to play out of his mind if we are going to win though.

Brian on May 5th, 2008 said...

Personally I think this falls on sloan. Did you see the recaps of the coaches talking to the team. Jackson is telling them what to do and Sloan is off in some dreamers world telling them well hey, you guys have beat everyteam in the league. There’s no reason why you can’t win tonight. Duh! How about Kobe Bryant and making your damn free throws and easy jump shots. Coaching was poor on this one. Sload did not prepare them for a battle and needed to since they had such a short rest from the last series. I blame the coaching staff for this one.

Brian on May 5th, 2008 said...

PS say what you want about Boozers turnovers. He’s been letting us down the entire playoffs. Go back to Clevland Boozer!

Prophet on May 5th, 2008 said...

Jazz will win game 2, 3, and 4. They will lose game 5 by a slim margin, and will take it all in six.

Becky on May 5th, 2008 said...

It amazes me that Kyle gets “blamed” for things when in reality everyone misses shots! Okur was 7/19 Williams was 5/18

Yes, everyone misses shots but they play more minutes so they take more shots and then they make more shots. Yes Okur had a great game but more than half of the shots he took didn’t go.

Give Kyle a break. He doesn’t even get a full 24 minutes anymore. If he was allowed to shoot the way he did when he was with the Sixers you would see the confidence return. They ran down the floor - gave it to Kyle and he shot it. They didn’t have to “wait” for everyone to pass the ball 5 times. Or for rebounders to be in place in case he missed.

Maybe it’s time for everyone to remember this is a “team” sport and think about the fact that the points they lost by could have come from Okur hitting his 3’s he was 0 for 5 on 3’s or Williams going 1 for 6 on 3’s - or the 8 free throws the other players missed - Kyle was 6/6.

Stop blaming specific players for a team loss.

Linda McFarland on May 5th, 2008 said...

Becky…..I SO agree. Brian…..You heard coach talking when he was ask to put on a mike for the NBA! Have you ever heard Sloan talk his regular way when he was trying to say the right thing for millions to hear? Come on. What he really had to say to his players wasn’t that little bit you heard. Someone says he yells and is too hard on his players and someone else says he was too soft so we lost the game. The Jazz lost because they did not play the game their coaches taught them to play. It was no one persons fault. This is a team sport.

Good teams carry each other, bad teams blame each other, good players blame themselves, bad players blame their team mates. We must have one heck of a great team. This is by far THE BEST UTAH JAZZ TEAM EVER!! We have the best bench in the NBA….. period. We are also allowed to have a bad game. The only thing that concerns me are the grossly glaring discrepancies in fouls being called…..at the half we were 4-8 at the line while LA was 15-17?????? COME ON!!!!!

We had are chance to win the game last night if we would have had more time to prepare I think it would have happen but now I think Lakers will be more difficult to play and are chances will be very- very slim . Kobe and Derick wants us to be down 2 going back to Utah.
Derick Fisher motive was to play for the Lakers so he could win a Championship the Jazz Organization would have worked with him through his crisis wiith his daughter. He was not loyal to the UtahJazz organization are players. That reason why everytime he steps on floor against the Jazz he get Booed
Charles Barkley had this comment that Fisher should not take it personally he is rivalry.
We appreciate what fisher did for Jazz while he was playing here but if he would have gone and played with any other team than the Lakers it would have not been quite so bad.

Ivey on May 5th, 2008 said...

The team was not prepared mentally. The short rest after a tough series with the Rockets caused the many turnovers and the lack of consentration hurt the team defense. This is still a team that can raise its intensity and perform at the expected high level needed to win this series. a CRITICAL decision needs to be made on how to adjust to Kobe Bryant.

Ryan on May 6th, 2008 said...

The Jazz need to play with more intensity. Just like they did in the 2 big runs against the Rockets. They just took it right to them. Boozer didn’t back off for any fadeaways. Okur drove. Williams was left wide open for 3’s because they were so afraid he was going to drive. Good things happen when the Jazz play offense offensively and just attack the basket. If all 5 players on the court are willing to set good screens and then go to the basket the Jazz will win the series. If they play hesitant and shoot a lot of fadeaway jump shots they will lose. The key is with Boozer. He needs to go right at Gasol and get him in foul trouble. If Boozer is being aggressive offensively it takes a lot of pressure off of Williams. They are both All Star players and need to play like it every game.

Eric on May 6th, 2008 said...

I agree with Ivey. I mean come on if you look at the first half compared to the second half it looked like 2 different teams were playing. I think Sloan and the Jazz adjusted well at halftime and I am excited to see them beat the crap out of the Lakers now that they are relaxed and settled down in the series.

    Go JAZZ!!!!

Joe on May 6th, 2008 said...

Harpring and Korver don’t need to step up. Harpring needs to step down! He’s not a scorer and even in his heyday he couldn’t carry a team. Matt had 12 minutes sure, but he did a lot of damage to the team in those 12 minutes. A game can get out of hand in 5 minutes. People need to end this love affair with “Matty” he’s a decent reserve but he shouldn’t have plays called for him and he single handedly puts the other team in penalty it seems.

Korver is a different story. He is new to the team and rarely misses that many shots, he also doesn’t miss layups like their going out of style. Korver has a huge upside and Matt seems to have a new physical problem every year. The media in this town love to defend his “toughness” ya toughness is good, but not at the expense of skill. Karl was tough and had skill, Barkley again skilled and strong, even Bill Laimbeer had a better skill set because he stayed within his game. Korver stays within his game. When Korver misses he keeps shooting and he is the type of player that if he’s 0 for 10 in the game, you want him shooting the buzzer beater because even when he misses it’s close. Matt can miss the rim from 6 feet. I think he is too concerned about being physical and not concerned enough about basketball, ya Jerry loves his game because Jerry had no real offensive talent and was a thug like Harpering.

Harpring should be used, he can defend (sometimes) and he can match up with a bigger forward if need be. But don’t run plays for him. I’ve honestly never seen him take over a game.

When we get in these funks where we miss a couple shots in a row. Deron needs to either get it inside to Boozer or take it to the rack himself. If we are going to lose then I’d rather lose with my all-stars not getting the job done.

Lastly I’m going back to the media in this town. I think Harpring is cradled like a baby by those talk radio and tv personalities. Nobody cuts Carlos a thing when he doesn’t perform. Why is that? Carlos is the key here, Deron is great but look at Kobe without Gasol, or without Shaq or think of Manu without TD. Carlos is a steady force and can get good shots if they keep feeding him. It opens up the outside and save last game he usually makes really good passes out of the post.

    SLOANESES LET THAT HARPRING GO!

    Phil N on May 6th, 2008 said...

Message to Boozer: Maybe your back is hurting, but stop getting fouls by pushing people off to get a rebound. Refs are watching. Spend sometimes to practice jump shots, shoot in rythm, don’t hestitate.

Message to Korver: Shooting guards should be able to shoot. Haven’t seen a good shooting game from you yet, only one game if I remember right. Spend time practicing those 3s. Don’t shoot too fast.

Message to Harpring: Stop turning the ball over by fouling.

    Phil N on May 6th, 2008 said...

    Again,
I agree with Sloan on playing inside out. But once the ball is kicked outside, we can’t make shot. Why don’t we spend a day or two for players to just pracice outside shots underpressure? Isn’t that the only way to open up the inside game? I don’t blame D-Will for his miss shots because he took it inside and the traffic was jammed. If we can’t make outside shots, they’re going to jam the traffic inside, therefore inside players like Boozer or dribble drive D-Will will not be able to score. SPEND SOME TIME ON OUTSIDE SHOTS

alright people, i am from utah, i think, but have been in cali since 1993. I tell you what: I have to listen/witness/and participate with LA Fakers out here! HATE IT!! Anyhow, about the JAZZ now…youth! that’s the only issue we have right now. Sloan is guiding these young fellas as best as his impatient old school self knows how. He wnats to deal with professionals, but he has youngsters instead. FULL of TALENT, dont get me wrong. I could get into experience and all that, but i wont. Bottom line is: D-Will needs to shoot more.(is this the 90’s again, stockton has same issue) boozer needs to foget about the refs, being an all-star, and GO TO THE RACK!! his feet are too quick for anyone who guards him. We need to WANT the ball! that means EVERYBODY! Millsap needs that chip back on his shoulder! MAtt and Kyle just need to get their shots to fall. (we couldnt buy a bucket sunday) Speaking of sunday…this is utah you know….AK keep up the intensity. and let’s all remember that we had no legs sunday, and once we are FRESH, total different ball game!!1 GO JAZZ!

The Jazz will loose this series and anyother they play in with players like Okur and Harpring.

Okur is the laziest basketball player I have ever seen, watch any game and you will see him standing doing nothing at least 85% of the time. All Okur does is shoot from the outside and get lucky every once in awhile. I have been a devoted Jazz fan since stockton and Malone but jerry sometimes drives me nuts when he keeps a player in the game like Okur.

Harpring thinks he is still a football player and only knows how to hack players instead of play ball I thought he did a better job the other night but still needs to start making his shots.

I love Boozer but so far in the playoffs he has shown nothing spectacular, he needs to start playing some basketball.

Please Jerry, do not let Okur play keep brewer and millsap in and even play someone else.

Beau on May 6th, 2008 said...

    to all you jazz fans!
Okur has great size and can use it on defense, he also shoots “in the moment” better than anyone.

Williams is the best point guard on the planet and if you don’ t think so watch game two!

Boozer is hungry so we need to feed him alot this next game. I think he is his biggest critic. I’m not worried about last game affecting this next game.

    Kirilenko aka AK47 enough said.

Brewer knows he can shoot but he is MOST dangerous when he penetrates of the dribble and just jumps towards the hoop.

    THATS MY OPINION

I’m getting very concerned about Booz. He is not playing anywhere near his level and its not because LA is that good against him. He wasn’t playing to the level we’ve come to expect of him end the vry end of the seaon and then during the Rockets season. Don’t get me wrong, he’s putting up admirable #’s for any player but not for the “throatslasher” fans at Utah.
I believe his back is bothering hi more than he is letting on. He really has no “ups at all and therefore even his rebounds have fallen off. I don’t know, maybe I’m way out there, but I think that’s more to it than him just “crappin” out on the team. Than is not in Booz’ character and never will be. Unfortunately, the fans don’t see anything other than his “poor” play.
One “fan” even went so far to say today on the Salt Lake Tribune Utah Jazz WebSite, Boozer Sucks and Should Be Benched For The Remainder Of The Playoffs. Millsap, should start and they can fill in around him. Boozer has let the team down and doesn’t deserve to finish the remainder of the playoffs.
Wow, what a difference a year makes Right???????
Let me know folks what you think…….

the nba’s marketing machine is at work again! for ratings purposes, they(the league office) want the lakers and celtics in the finals! its called ratings! ratings=$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. GAME-1- jazz crush the lakers on the boards, points in the paint and second chance points. the difference in the game? FREE THROWS! lakers plus 16 on this end. When it is 8 on 5 and key players are not getting calls when they go to the rack….and getting into foul trouble on the defensive end, these things take player(s) out of their rythm on both ends of the court. Game-2- sames as game 1, but much, much worse! Jazz shoot 13 of 16 in free throws, lakers 35 of 43! thats 35 of 43! dont believe me? watch the tape! in back to back plays fish reaches in strips the ball(foul not called) and then korver reaches in and foul iscalled! this is one of many examples!

branden on May 8th, 2008 said...

nba marketing machine continued: 1st quarter- i counted4 times where kobe “hooked” ronnie brewer on the baseline and there was no call made. another example - booz gets called for push-off on the rebound, ok fine ,i do not dispute that he pushed off! the funny thing is the very next play gasol used 2hands on boozers back to pinhim down while getting a rebound…nocall? the jazz turn overs 10,lakers 15. points in the paint jazz 58,lakers40! thats 58 to 40 and the jazz only go to the line 16 times???? off/rebounds-jazz-16-lakers 4, the jazz outrebounded thelakers, hadmore assists, less turn overs ,killed them in the paint. in the first quarter thejazz went to the line ONE TIME vs the lakers??? they out scored them in the second by one,3rd quater by 4 andthe 4th quarter was even…difference in the game FREE THROWS.. besides Gasol with 5 blocks? I would agreewith one or two . there again at least 3 calls 12 point swing?

I think its getting close to time to sit Harpring on the bench and get CJ some minutes. Matt is a great football player on the floor, but in this series he hasn’t been much of a basketball player. The style of ball that the Lakers play is too fast for him which makes him a liability out there, he’s so rushed whenever he shoots a jumper or even a layup that he is missing those shots he usually makes. CJ would be a much better fit for this series. I will however give Harpring props for his attitude and the heart he plays with; which is a lot more than can be said for Boozer. He’s a gutless wonder, and heartless too. The guy acts like all he has to do is show up to the game and he’ll play well and his team will win; at least thats the demeanor he plays with. When was the last time you saw him dive after a loose ball, or even run after one for that matter? The man just doesn’t show that he has that intense desire to win. He has Gasol and Odom guarding him most of the time; two guys he could totally man-handle inside because of his strength over them, but he’d rather shoot jumpers, drive to the hoop and fade away from the rim and avoid the contact, and of course commit stupid fouls by pushing guys in the back rather than putting forth a little extra effort to get position and use his body rather than his hands to create separation….. Very frustrating to watch his game right now. Sloan said it right when he said Carlos has to help himself first, nobody else can go out there and make his shots or defend for him.

Okay here it is. First off i would like to respond to the post about Kyle Korver and Matt Harping. This year i can forgive Korver lack of effort which is due to his lack of NBA Playoff experience. He was nervous he had never been on a team that actually had a chacne even when Phili had Iverson. It was his first big NBA Playoff run and he was nervous.

As for Harpring there is no excuse he has been in that very situation last year and performed. In my point of view Harpring needs to leave. Retire him, trade him, hell even LET HIM GO. He is whats slowing us down. I mean seriously no team wants someone who screws up five consecutive plays. Now don’t get me wrong i like that guy he is getting old and injury has messed his shot at a title up and there is no question about it.

Another “Split End” is Andrei. talk about lack of effort then add the fact that he has been babying healed injuries do not help at all. My take, Andrei either stop being a cry baby or go somewhere else. We have the talent to replace him plus we could get someone with better offensive talent. On top of all that he Fouled out in three games against the Lakers. Game one he fould out with horrible stats. Game two he did a little better but again fouled out. Then game three he showed his incredible defense and then fouled out. Now if you dont know what that shows then you shouldnt be watching NBA basketball action.

On a different note GO JAZZ and better luck next season.
