My Take: Jazz vs Lakers Game 5

‘Hollywood Hangtime’ (Andrew D. Bernstein - NBAE/Getty Images)
FINAL SCORE – LAKERS 111 JAZZ 104
A gallant effort and a missed chance. On the other hand, I don’t think you are going to win many against a team this good on the road with the turnovers you had in the first half and without a better performance from one of your main stars.
Jack Nicholson just came over and told us, “I don’t want to see you till Christmas.”
:20.5 4th Quarter – Lakers 107 Jazz 102
Sasha misses again and Gasol grabs the rebound and the put-back. Jazz want a foul for pushing Okur, couldn’t tell from here. Sloan and Okur were insistent
Huge call by Jerry out of the last timeout, he went to Boozer on a cross screen and got Boozer converted. Wow that took guts.
Memo took a quick three down 105-102 and missed it.
Deron hit a sick three to put the Jazz within one, but the Lakers converted on a second chance opportunity to put the lead back to three and then Memo missed that three
3:07 4th Quarter – Lakers 99 Jazz 94
Boozer’s nightmare continues, he hit just 1 of 2 free throws and then missed a gimme lay-up off a gorgeous pass from Deron
Then AK missed a three.
I know a lot of you are saying Jerry should pull him. I am not sure what you do if you are Sloan, Boozer is your guy but he looks lost. If you pull him you humiliate him and my lose him as a star and your guy and he is really special. But right now he is really far off his game. If you don’t you could lose the season. Milsap is not having a good night either.
Jazz defense has stepped up and gotten stops on 5 of the last 6 possessions.
Sasha Vujacic is 1 for 9.
6:01 4th Quarter — Lakers 97 Jazz 91
This one is falling on Boozer right now. He is 2 for 9 in the second half. He just got beat back door by Odom and then committed a soft stupid foul pushing him in the back when he was beat. Then on the next play he didn’t come to get the ball but got it anyway and then travelled in the post.
He is 0 for 2 in the quarter with a turnover and a big time blown defensive assignment.
Deron is still on top of his game with 5 of the 7 4th quarter points.
Lakers have scored on 7 of 10 trips down the floor. .
8:38 4th Quarter – Lakers 89 Jazz 86
Jazz still haven’t taken the lead. They had one chance but couldn’t convert.
Jazz opened the quarter with AK at the 4 and Deron at the 1
Phil went back to Radmanovic.
End of 3rd Quarter – Lakers 81 Jazz 81
Here we go 12 minutes to take control of the series.
Jazz have not had the lead in LA in this series
Great fight, effort and energy in the 3rd.
Kobe took over for the last part of the 3rd scoring 6 straight Lakers points
Nice drive by Ronnie Price to tie us at 81-81
Jazz got it tied at 73-73, but could never get the lead.
Lot of credit to Ronnie Brewer he has bounced back to have a good 3rd quarter. He could have hit the tank after getting pulled and ripped on in the 2nd quarter. This is a good sign for the future.
4:40 3rd Quarter — Lakers 73 Jazz 71
The Jazz have accomplished their first goal. Get this game into a possession game. Great work.
The Jazz have super energy. They are playing great defense. They are bumping cutters. They are the ones making it tough on the Lakers rather than vice versa.
Gasol is useless if you push him off his spot. The Jazz have done that in this half. If he is off his spot it takes him too long to get to the rim and he is not a weapon.
Deron is sick, he was 19-9.
Carlos is missing shots he should make, but he also made a great move to the middle off a double that resulted in a Brewer tip in.
AK is guarding Kobe rather than Brewer. The difference in Kobe’s success rate is big between Brewer and AK but fatigue and foul trouble could be an issue.
Halftime — Lakers 61 Jazz 54
Jazz are still in the game which is fortunate. They got it down to 55-52 but a lot of the same issue reared their ugly head. Deron took a bad shot three that lead to a transition basket for Gasol.
Then turnovers caused problems as they did all half. The Jazz finished with 15 turnovers in the first half. That is an insane amount, it 30% of the offensive possessions.
CJ Miles came off the bench after Brewer got pulled and got two big baskets and played fairly well.
In all honesty, I am not sure this game is this close, I feel like we are just on the backside of a Jazz run and it is only a matter of time before the Lakers regain control by 12 to 16. Let’s hope I am wrong.
5:53 2th Quarter – Lakers 46 Jazz 35
The Jazz are getting their ass kicked right now in every phase of the game and the game
is nowhere near as close as the score and the score isn’t close
The Lakers are defending great. They are speeding the Jazz up and the Jazz are making mistakes because of it.
Derek Fisher is setting the tone by busting his ass on Deron.
The Jazz are soft on the glass, scared on offense and not in the game at all
Brewer came in and forgot to guard his man, Sasha. He hit a three. Jerry pulled him and ripped him like I have rarely seen. Last guy he ripped like that was Gordan
End of 1st Quarter – Lakers 29 Jazz 26
Jazz should feel fortunate to be this close they have been totally outplayed.
Harpring causes Kobe problems. My theory is that Kobe is a dirty player and Hapring matches it and isn’t intimidated. Kobe knows for every nasty dirty move Harpring will do one back.
Kobe went 3 for 6. 3 for 4 on Brewer; 0 for 1 v. AK and Hapring. Harpring also forced two turnvoes.
Jazz shot 61% with 7 turnovers; Lakers shot 60% with 6 turnovers but hit 4 threes
2:52 1st Quarter - Lakers 25 Jazz 18
Jazz had it down to 19-16 but Radmanovic hit back to back threes.
Jerry switched AK to Kobe and it slowed him down.
The Lakers are not guarding Ronnie Brewer at all. Kobe was sitting in Boozers lap and not even following Brewer. Brewer has 10 points and this is largely why.
7:54 1st Quarter — Lakers 15 Jazz 8
Very poor start for the Jazz
They have committed 5 turnovers
I am very concerned that it looks like Carlos Boozer is making no effort to get the basketball
Kobe is fine. The back is a non issue. He is on fire. He is 3 for 4 with 7 points.
Kobe has been exploding shooting doing whatever he needs. he hit a three, got a slice through the lane and posted up for buckets.
The Jazz have only taken 4 shots on 9 possessions, Brewer has them all and they were all lasyups or dunks.
Jazz were very loose coming out but that didn’t seem to be a good indicator.
Also, the crowd booed Steve Javie, the official and he heard it.
Keys to the Game
1. Get Memo off early to open up Boozer
2. Be very physical with Gasol. He gets all of his points off others action so get him out of the key
3. Plan from ahead
Officials
Steve Javie
Bob Delaney
Tom Washington

Love the close games! This is what we (and the networks) pay for, and the players are certainly giving the entire viewing public their money’s worth. Win or lose (either team), this series is good for the NBA’s image. Look at the Boston-Cleveland fiasco - if fans really wanted to see so little scoring, they would start watching soccer. Hoops fans like BUCKETS, and these Laker-Jazz games are showcasing two of the league’s most skilled offensive teams. Players like Okur and Gasol and Kirilenko and Radmonavich are so much nicer to watch than so many homegrown “talents” because they can actually shoot and handle the ball. Fundamental skills that so many American players get by without because of raw physical ability. Interesting, then, that Shaq and D. Howard are already gone fishin’, while the skinny Spaniard and the slow-footed Turk are putting up big numbers on the national stage. Viva la Basketball.
The playoff ghost of Karl Malone has infected Carlos Boozer. To soft and chokes under pressure.
I have loved the Jazz all my life but I can honestly say it’s over. I know they pulled off a similar win in the postseason last year against the Rockets but these Lakers are a better team led by a rapist and a guy who was stolen from Memphis.
I just can’t wait until the Hornets take them out in the next round.
With Delaney and Javie officiating we ( Jazz ) did not have a chance. I hear so many times you can not put blame on the officials win or loose–well I am here to tell you there are certain officials that turn a blind eye when it comes to watching dirty plays from a ( Kobe Bryant ) home court team. I wish we could get a copy of the song “Three Blind Mice ” it is so fitting when you see three officials shrug and say none of them saw the foul.
On the other side of this I do believe in an Eye for an Eye– if you are going to dish it out Lakers then learn to take it, we will see how the whinning turns when we meet you back on our home court.
GO JAZZ– Let’s do it in 7… that’s why they went from a 3 game series to a 7 game…..just gives us more oportunites to show off how our Utah Jazz Team has grown and can win.
Well i am convinced, the nba is still corupt, and the refs last night proved that! I wonder how much money STERN paid them to favor the lakers with calls?? The NBA got ride of one cheating rat of a ref…..now they need to get rid of three more!!! DELANEY AND JAVIE especially! It is making me sick to watch the NBA because it is no longer the better team who decides the victory…..it is what team will create more revenue in the finals who moves on! GGGOOOOO JJJAAZZZZZ
Good game refs!
#1 Good game refs! The NBA wants the lakers in the finals and they will do everything in there power to insure they are!!! The governement is investigating the NFL for spygate they need to do the same with the NBA!!!!
#2 I thought this was a game of men! Not once did I see the Lakers accept a call Gasol has to be the biggest baby in all of NBA!
#3 Dang it Boozer go in the lane hard!!! Come on man! Do not let the ghost of Karl Malone haunt you man!!!!
There is no way in hell that the jazz can win a game when it is 8 against 5 (3 refs) it does not matter who you play. The National Basketball Association is doing everything in their legal power to advance the Lakers and the Boston Celtics to the NBA Finals!!!! Friday Night the Lakers have something else coming to them!!!! We as a JAZZ UNIITY are seeking for vengence and for blood. We will do anything and everything in our power on friday night to corrupt the so called best team in the west!!! They better be ready for battle. JAZZ FANS PREPARE FOR GLORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Trade or cut Boozer. He has to be the most annoying player in the league. Here are a few examples, the constent yelling and one, everytime he thinks someone is fouled in the act of shooting, yelling give me that on rebounds, yelling after every missed shot he takes(like they ever had a chance), and he puts barnyard animals to shame with the way he destroys his gum. Besides these annoying tendencies he is a sorry excuse for an NBA all-star. I heard an interview with him about two months ago where he said, and I quote “18 foot jump shots are like lay ups to me”, what? I guess he wasn’t lying because he can’t even make lay-ups. Sure people are saying he is having trouble with the taller players of the the Lakers frontline but they are giving him open shots. He is 6′9 and the people gaurding him are a whole inch taller than him, give me a break. He is good around the basket if he would wise up and stay around the rack. My opionion, get rid of him while we still might get someone of value for him. He is too busy trying to look cool instead of getting in someones a$$ and refusing to lose. I think we win that game if we stick his worthless butt on the bench. He better pull his head out or we will be sent packing on our home court.
What’s with all the negativity? I also have been a fan for 20 years and all I can say is “It’s not over til it’s over”. It’s the best out of seven - remember?
Go Jazz!!!!!
jazz need some pieces next year lakers is not better team at all if it is they would swept jazz jazz need some size i wish i will see KYRYELO FESENKS in line up next year c bizkit dont blame boozer he ll be ok boozer is better than most power forwards
Couldn’t agree more with the suggested NBA agenda. It is obvious that the NBA wants a Laker-Celtic finals. It really was obvious in game 5. Gasol was over the back at least 5 times in the 2nd half and had an obvious charge on Harpring which was not called. Boozer was molested several times on put backs with no call. However, if you look at Bryant funny, a foul is called. It makes it hard to watch. Despite all of this, the Jazz should have still won the game and really are the better team. They can still win this despite all the “expert analysts” at ESPN.
As far as Boozer goes, I just do not understand why he fades away and settles for jumpers when he is the strongest player on the court. He should average at least 12-14 free throws per game. I really think that Millsap mixes it up much more than Boozer. This team is young and has unbelievable potential. They should make few roster changes in the off season.
I honestly think that Boozer shouldn’t be starting in this playoff series, instead of drawing the contact in the middle for the three point play, he is too worried about having to pick himself up off the floor.
Boozer will not go up for the rebound unless he is absolutely alone. Harpring, Millsap and on occasion Jarron Collins will contest for a rebound.
Boozer needs to box out in the middle, he is a strong power forward but apparently he likes the view he gets watching Odom go for the dunk like he did all last night.
In game 5 I saw some of the worst officiated games ever, Memo could not get an over the back call even when Pau shoves him across the court. Steve Javie is just as bad as Dick Bovetta.
The Utah Jazz is a young, strong and talented team, I will never stop being a fan so lets hope they can keep winning in Utah and get that much deserved championship that we have been waiting for forever.
Well first I have to say that the officiating for the games have been fair. It may not seem fair for Jazz fans, but think about it this way, Laker fans got it the same way. When the Lakers were at the “best” arena in the NBA, the refs called it in the way for the Jazz, and when the Jazz were at Staples (where apparently they are 0-5 this season) the refs called it in the way for the Lakers. So my point is, the home team has the advantage. Lastly, you guys have to stop booing Derek, I mean none of us can feel what he is going through unless you have been in that kind of situation. So, Jazz fans grow up and realize why Derek left utah. I am a Laker fan and I always will be. If the Lakers won’t win in game 6, we will definitely prevail in game 7. Hope you enjoy watching your Jazz for the last time this season.
Go Lakers!!!!
What is the matter with “C-BIZKIT”? How messed can you be? I would like to see you go out there and post up a 7′ Pau Gasol! He’s doing better than any other power forward on the Jazz. Plus you can’t trade in the middle with the playoffs, and if you have a problem with him yelling, just turn the sound off! It’s not too hard. And a piece of info for his shooting… He’s avraging 43%! Thats extreamly good for a power forward in the playoffs. So tuffen up and try and live with him for the rest of the playoffs.
i agree with jazzman and e2k, other than it’s not over. those refs were kissing the lakers butt
DWill8-
If I was Boozer’s size there would be no problem posting up Gasol. Boozer is quicker and much stronger than Gasol. I can tell you that I can hit an 15-18 foot jumpshot, like he quoted they were like layups to him. As regard to your 43%, how is that good for a person that should be 10 feet from the hoop? Since you assume this is good, I am sure that you will say its good for a power forward to average 4 turnovers a game as well. And I know you can’t trade him during the playoffs! BENCH HIM!!!
Go Jazz! I’m a new jazz fan. Started watching them during the 06-07 playoffs against Golden State. I used to hate the Jazz being from Texas but now that I live in SLC I have learned to love them. We have an awesome team. Great bench lineup and of course an incredibly talented Deron Williams. We are only going to get better as time goes on. Derek Fischer is a great player in all but we have shown that we don’t need him to make the playoffs. I know all Jazzbots are just dying to see the Jazz go to the Western Finals again. I know we can. And they said that the Jazz would get swept like the Nuggets. Gimme a break!
concerning booze, he can’t depend on the refs to call every foul when he is on the road and the refs obviously are not going to give him the call, he kept on going up and getting fouled and botching the shot because he believed he was fouled…even though the majority of those were fouls FINISH STRONG ANYWAYS, go for the three point play
SECONDLY, the officiating job was terrible…if it were not for two calls in the fourth quarter that were absolute bull the jazz would have pulled off that game…the first foul that was one of the most ridiculous calls i have ever seen while watching an NBA game was..1. VUJACIC FALLING OVER AS KIRILENKO’S HANDS ARE NO WHERE NEAR HIM AND VUJACIC KICKING THE BALL OUT OF BOUNDS SOMEHOW WAS A FOUL AGAINST KIRILENKO–THIS FOUL PUT THE JAZZ IN THE PENALTY WHEN THEY WERE ONLY DOWN 99-96 WITH HALF OF A QUARTER TO PLAY–IF THE CORRECT CALL HAD BEEN MADE–JAZZ BALL (OFF OF VUJACIC’S FOOT)–WHO KNOWS THE JAZZ COULD’VE CUT THE LEAD TO ONE OR TIED IT. 2. LAMAR ODOMS THREE POINT PLAY–THIS WAS ALMOST AS UPSETTING AS THE VUJACIC CALL–ODOM CLEARLY HAS BOOZER BEAT AND CARLOS BARELY LAYS A FINGER ON HIS BACK AS HE DUNKS IT
Blackmamba,
You are an idiot. Boozer’s daughter has sickle-cell anemia and he is constantly booed. His daughter was also conceived in-vetro. You want us to stop booing Fisher, then tell him to put on Utah jersey, because every single player that comes in to that arena is going to be booed, no matter who they are.
As Phil Jackson said, Utah loves basketball and we are die hard. By the way, after watching game 5, the only person showing any emotion was Jack Nicholson. The arena was silent. You guys go to games because it’s the “scene” We go because we love basketball. If the Jazz can execute at both ends of the floor, then they will win.
If anyone wants to see something funny go to youtube and type in Kobe elbows Sasha..He elbows his own team mate in the face on purpose.
JT: boozer being booed and fisher being booed are not the same reason. boozer is being booed because people just don’t like him and fisher is being booed because he left utah because of what? You tell me why he left utah. And Laker fans don’t constantly boo boozer whenever he touches the ball, but you guys boo fisher whenever he has the ball in his hands. And if I did offend you about boozer’s daughter then I apologize because it is highly unfortunate that she has sickle-cell anemia.
boozer sucks and he should be pulled.
had he pulled out of tonights game a bit earlier they may have had a chance. must be very frustrating to drop down the court time after time send it in to boozer and have him flower* it up. I think he is throwing the games.
what is with the moderation of the comments what is this nazi germany?
*Editor note: Kevin didn’t really type flower (the rest of the post is his) and No Kevin It’s not “Nazi Germany” - It’s a team sponsored blog. It’s open to everyone including kids and as you might observe actual grown ups with more then four letter word vocabulary - all we ask is that you make a point and keep it clean - do that and next time we will post all your comments.
I hate to be in the minority of all you conspiracy theorists who think that every year the refs/NBA have a hidden agenda against the Jazz. You can argue all you want about the Lakers vs. Celtics replay, the small demographic market of Salt Lake City or (the classic), “they hate Mormans” complaint. The fact remains, under Jerry Sloan as coach, the Jazz have been one of the most successful playoffs team in the history of the NBA. I’ve been a fan since I was a child. Since the days of Thurl Bailey, Mike Brown, and Mark Eaton, have I dreamed of seeing my team go to the Finals and claim the hallowed O’brien trophy. Only once have I been lucky enough to watch the Jazz go to the finals only to be heart broken by the greatest player to ever play the game, Jordan. I can hear it now, “Jordan pushed off of Russell.” True, Jordan did push of off Russell but was it the core reason for losing that series? No. And if you really think that this was just one many instances proving that there are hidden agendas at play behind the scenes, then you obviously never played organized atheletics at a high competetive level. Refs are human, refs are old, refs are slow, refs are dumb, and finally refs are not the problem. Instead of blaming the misfortune of the Jazz on the weak aforementioned arguements, we the fans may want to acknowledge one thing. Since ‘88, the Jazz have had all kinds of incredibly talented atheletes come and go but always falling short when it counted most. So what is it that hasn’t changed? Yes people call me what you want but I have to call a spade a spade. Sloan is the Marty Shottenheimer of the NBA. He will be a hall of fame coach and good reason. Is it really unfair to say that he has done just enough to not get fired? All I can say is, Sloan has consistantly produced teams that have pour free throwing stat’s and the inability to handle high pressure, clutch situations. A lot of his success can be attributed to his traditional “pick ‘n’ roll” style of coaching as well as his focus on highly physical playing.
Needless to say, I believe that we have always been beatin by the better teams, and yes, as much as it pains me to say it, the L.A. is the better team.
We as fans need to hold the Jazz coaching accountable and not blame it on conspiracy’s that are erounious at best.
man.. arguing about the refs calls… its impossible that the refs are favoring the lakers thus making the lakers victorious!its obvious that the refs are making the approprite calls for the players violations..some people make up stories (that are lies by the way)to defend what they desire.. just face that fact that lakers is the better team …
a laker fan
Sorry Utah!! LAKERS was the better team..better luck next year!!!
Problemsolver,
Have a little class…We,(Jazz fans) don’t need to hear anything from you, (a Lakers fan). Obviously your going to agree with what I said because your team was on the winning end of those decisions. Let the truth be known, your “beloved” Kobe Bryant, your “MVP” will never be in the same class as Jordan, Magic, Russell, Bird and so on. His recieving of the NBA’s MVP award was a joke. The award is meant for a player that has the most profound and successful impact on a team…Chris Paul! Kobe’s performance this year was the same last year. If anyone on the Lakers should have recieved that award it should have been given to Gasol seeing as how Gasol was the piece to the Lakers puzzle. Lest we forget; the beginning of the 2007 season where the “noble”, “honorable”, “Most Valuable Player” Kobe Bryant talked mad trash about your esteemed “Purple and Gold.” Bryant bad mouthed the managing, coaching and players followed by the “cue de graw” statement admitting that he would like to be traded! Those are some pretty honorable and noble statements. Ofcourse now, Kobe is as happy as can be. So all you Lakers fans,(especially you problemsolver), think about how much love your boy Kobe had for you at the begining of this season when you start chanting “MVP” again. I cringe and dry heave everytime some gomer commentator fawns all over Mr. Bryant and his “incredible” skills. The true MVP got robbed his trophy this year, and I’ll be right there cheering Mr. Paul on as he breaks Kobe’s ankles and dashes his little pathetic season in a four game sweep!
Whatever the outcome of this season, L.A’s fans,(that’s you Problemsovler) have proven yet again that they know/care more about their little knipping lap dogs in $5000 dollar hand bags, their hair, their manicures, pedicures, and any other pethetic fad that the rest of the country will sit and laugh at as California rots from the inside out from state bankruptcy, illegal immagration, and the worlds most rediculous laws ever created. So keep talking Problemsolver and when California either spontaneously combusts or sinks into the Pacific, those of us who had to be force fed your two faced, spoiled little brat of a so called ambassador to the NBA, Kobe Bryant, will be chillen sippin a cold one Arizona Bay!
Boozer’s needs to develop a sort of baby jump hook shot more than trying to make layups from 5-10 feet away from the basket posting a taller defender. That was his problem down the stretch when defenders were really playing defense on him. He really does not have a jump shot which sort of hurts him. He is basically good at rebounds and making layups, thats it. Referees in Game 6 were calling the right calls for once in the Jazz arena. The Laker’s just out played the Jazz the whole time. The Jazz could not make layups and open shots until the end..
All thats left is the crying…… Jazz fans need to man up, instead of blaiming the refs, saying there was alot of bad calls, boo hoo. You guys claim to be a rough team, of course since your rough you commit a ton of fouls. Maybe if you actually learned how to play defense you wouldn’t have to foul. Step 1 to winning a championship: You have to want it more than the other team.
Step 2: Show up in big games. Boozer choked under pressure.
Step 3: Defense
Step 4: Get a real coach with a winning mentallity, Phil Jackson is always going to beat a Sloan team, he’s proved that several times.
To the Jazz fans: Im sorry that we took your western conference crown away(thats all you want to hang your hat on) but were not satisfied with that. LAKERS are about more than winning the west, we want the trophy.
LAKERS 14 CHAMPIONSHIPS(soon to be 15)- jazz 0
GO LAKERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
