My Take: Jazz Lose To Lakers in Game 6

‘Furious Comeback Falls Short’ (Melissa Majchrzak - NBAE/Getty Images)

FINAL SCORE — LAKERS 108 JAZZ 105
Ohh my — Fisher missed a free throw and the Jazz got the ball down three.
They rushed to the front court and Korver got the first chance but he didn’t like his look so he flipped it to Okur who was short, the Jazz got the rebound and Deron got the ball and shot a three that looked like it was on line but it rimmed out.
The comeback was valiant but the game was lost in the first half — the Jazz only played 24 minutes of this game in an elimination game.

:15.5 4th Quarter — Lakers 107 Jazz 103
AK hits another three — both Odom and Kobe hit the free throws

:23.9 4th Quarter — Lakers 103 Jazz 100
Lakers have the ball and the Jazz will need to foul
Jazz are nailing the three’s — the Jazz have hit 4 straight, Deron, AK and Memo
Kobe has scored the last 10 points for the Lakers

2:55 4th Quarter — Lakers 99 Jazz 88
Kobe hit two sick shots to put the game away.
Coming back on the Lakers is almost impossible when they have Kobe.
Boozer fouls out and finished the last three games going 16 for 47 from the field. That is tough.
AK and Memo spent most of the quarter on the bench.

6:22 4th Quarter — Lakers 91 Jazz 82
Deron with an unreal hanging in the air, defyiong gravity reverse lay-up puts Jazz within 11
Fastbreak to Milsap puts Jazz within 9.
The Jazz are playing great.
Now the question is did the Lakers lose focus and can they get it back,
Kobe may be able to get back on his own.
Lakers ball right now and the Jazz have to get a start.
The margin for error is still zero. Jazz can’t have more than one or two empty possessions the rest of the way.

8:24 4th Quarter - Lakers 89 Jazz 76
Closest Jazz have been since 56-43.
Boozer is playing with 5 fouls, best line of the night — “Jerry might call the 6th on him.”
Kobe is off the floor.

End of 3rd Quarter — Lakers 86 Jazz 70
It just got so bad a Jazz dancer started doing the wrong routine and ended up in completely the wrong spot. She had to scramble around and figure out where she was supposed to be.
This is the essence of the night. The Jazz played great in the third, they battled, they played defense, they had great energy, they ran the floor, they did it all. The end result they cut down 3 points on the lead.
If they played that hard all night they would win by 12 in a brilliant performance.
That is how they had to play in an elimination game and instead we got the opposite.
Jazz got it to 14 on a few occasions and had three different chances to get closer but couldn’t.
My rule is you have to be within as many points as their are minutes to play up until 4 minutes. We will see if they can do that/
5:14 3rd Quarter — Lakers 76 Jazz 61
The Jazz have opened the second half with great energy. They have gained 4 points. If they had played with great energy all night they might have a 4 point lead. How this didn’t arrive to start the game is the greatest mystery of all.

Halftime — Lakers 62 Jazz 43
The crowd just got into a “referees suck” chant unfortunately tonight the Lakers fans had the chant right,.
The Jazz have never had any energy
I am not sure why CJ Miles came in for Kyle Korver but he showed why he hasn’t played consistently all season, that is really a minor issue.
Again this is a collective disaster. There are no names to mention, no x-o’s to breakdown, no adjustment,

4:43 2nd Quarter — Lakers 50 Jazz 35
Nothing has really changed. This was supposed to be Staying Alive and instead it has been Pulp Fiction.
Their is no analysis to give you. It is a question of where was the effort to start. I have a feeling the next 29 minutes of basketball will only confuse us about what really happened.
Here is a good example, Jazz cut it to 12 and have a fast break, Fisher rips Deron and goes the other way where CJ Miles tries to prevent the lay-up and half ass fouls him and it results in a 3 point play to make it a 15 point game.

End of 1st Quarter — Lakers 33 Jazz 20
A disaster. I can’t believe what I just watched. Was it a hangover, from Game 5 ,did the AK thing have an impact, are the Lakers this much better, did they lose their will, who knows what happened.
I am trying not to write about individual players because it was such a collective effort or effortless performance.
Kobe has 10. Lakers shot 50% and had just 1 turnover
Boozer leads the Jazz with 6 points and 5 rebounds.
Jazz are 7 of 23.
2:04 1st Quarter — Lakers 28 Jazz 14
This is really depressing. They have no juice, no passion, seemingly no interest.
At this moment I believe the series ended in Game 5, the team has not recovered.
No game in this series has changed leads after the first quarter.
This series is moments away from ending if something drastic doesn’t change.
This is a collective effort. Unreal. I am sick to my stomach.

5:19 1st Quarter - Lakers 18 Jazz 10
Amazingly the Jazz are not playing hard.

Not very much else needs to be said. They are not playing hard, they are showing no urgency and they don’t seem to realize they are about to be eliminated from the playoffs. You would have no idea if you were in this game that it was an elimination game. WOW

Keys to the Game
Get out early. The lead has not changed after the first quarter in any game of this series.Be physical defensively.

The Triangle offense of the Lakers is all about spacing and timing and the Jazz must disrupt that.
Make plays late in the shot clock. At this point in a series plays are going to blow up and it is going to come down to the final second of the shot clock. Expect 15 possessions in the game will come down to the final 5 seconds. How many times you are able to make a play out of nothing will likely dictate the winner.
Be brilliant. This is time for brilliance and people have to step up to the moment.

I can but say thanks for a great season!

It’s unfortunate the officials can’t understand what constitutes a Charge, or a foul, but I can but suppose the Sterns button was pushed, and when pressured with high voltage I suppose I too would toot a whistle.

I’m not going to summarize this game, many more qualified will do so. As expected too many calls too many non calls, Stern’s refs were in full force.

But in reality the JazzMen lost this game. They did not come to play tonight.

    Fine, stern demanded such anyway.

    Possibly next year?

I can’t go fishin, despite Barkley and the TNT bunch, that is what I prefer to be doing this time of year, without extending a massive hand shake to all of the JazzMen and what they have provided us, the fans, this season.

Oh and if you desire I can do a respectable job of putting you on fish at Powell as well. Just in case!

Thanks for a great season, we all had hopes for more.

I know you also had them.

    Good luck next year Jazz

Trade Boozer. What a let down.

I am so disappointed in the loss for the Jazz. They could have easily won this series, if it weren’t for the officiating of every single game. One in particular is Steve Javie. After googling his name, it looks like I’m not the only one out there who feels this way. We sat in front of him several years ago at a game at Staples between the Lakers and the Jazz and he was talking to a friend of his expressing how much he “hated” the Jazz and how he does everthing he can to go against their team. How is that a fair ref???

Anyone, congratulations to the Jazz for making it to the playoff for the second year, I hope that next year will be much better. I enjoy watching their games and am so sad that their season is over.

I love how Lakers fans get on here acting like we care? Sorry Daniel, CAPS locking your keyboard does not make you look cool, smart, or mean. Makes you look and sound like a 12 yr old though.

Like I said before TRADE BOOZER!!! He is soft and might have the lowest basketball IQ in the league. I hope he reads this(which he probably does) and takes it with him to the off-season. He could come back next year as the giant for this team but more in likely he will be wearing an over-sized skirt like he did this year!

Ok I am a big Laker fan but I have to admit the Jazz gave us a good game I am very happy that we won, but I appreciate the effort that Utah put into their game to make this a wonderful series, I think we have a big chance to win this year and to all you Utah fans up there congratulations for a great team, I really wish that you guys could have won, back when the mail man was there but this is how the cookie crumbles

I could honestly say that the Jazz are a very good team!!! I think that your team will get better in the near future….but…….the lakers are going to be that much better when Bynum comes back which means trouble for the NBA. If the Jazz meet the lakers again in the next few years, you jazz fans might have to get use to dissapointing postseasons just like in the 90’s. By the way, I couldnt believe how much crying the jazz fans did in game 6, although it was pretty funny. Heres a stat for all you bitter fans, at one point in the game last night the lakers and the jazz both had 15 fouls apiece. How is that not equal, someone explain? Throughout the whole series, the jazz couldnt stop fouling. What the jazz need to do, is get some people who can actually guard to be real contenders and a little bit of consistancy.

Look here RRR, you don’t know anything about basketball. David Stern wants the game to be refereed fairly and hence only has the best of the best referees officiating the playoffs. The Jazz lost this series on their own because they don’t know how to play defense hence picking up all those easy fouls that I could have called. And it’s not even in this series, didn’t your beloved Jazz pick up the most personal fouls during the regular season? And you’re going to cry about it now because they lost? It figures you would because you can’t admit you lost to a better team. The Jazz play defense by reaching in and grabbing people instead of moving their feet. Kirilenko is a damn good defensive player but he’s more of a help defender. Brewer is still too young but he’s going to be a good defender one day. Harpring likes contact so you can’t complain about that. And just so you know, a charge is a foul and the refs did a good job officiating the game because they called it both ways. The Lakers beat you at home where no one can win because the refs are biased at Energy Solutions Arena. So talk all you want about calls and non calls then watch replays of the game and tell me where the foul was on Gasol’s dunk attempt when Okur got all arm, or where the foul was when Fisher cleanly stripped the ball from Okur, or where the foul was on the Lamar’s dunk or Kobe’s dunk. The Jazz play physical so you’re going to expect more fouls. Lakers all the way. 2008-2013 NBA CHAMPIONS!!

I’m a Laker Fan. But I’m not here to gloat and taunt like that other Laker Fan did. You guys are lucky to have Deron Williams. That guy is amazing. He was extremly entertaing to watch. I predict that you guys will win a championship somewhere down the road because of D-Will. Not Boozer. I’m sorry, but Boozer is overrated. He sucks soo bad.
The Jazz played a very good series and if it wasn’t for D-Will, the Jazz probably would not have won a game.
And once D-Will becomes more experianced, you guys WILL win a TITLE.

I HAVE TO SAY SOMETHING TOO!LAKERS HAD BEST PLAYERS IN HISTORY OF THE NBA AND OWNER OF THAT TEAM GOT MONEY.ONLY PEOPLE WHO LIKES LAKERS ARE FAMEOUS AND REACH PEOPLE.JAZZ HAD TWO PRIMARY PLAYERS ALL THE TIME.THIS GROUP IS MUCH STRONGER THAN WHEN STOCKTON AND MALONE USE TO PLAY.DERRON WILLIAMS WAS THE ONLY GUY WHO PLAYED WELL AGAINST LAKERS AND TRADE OF BOOZER WILL NEVER HAPPEN.JAZZ NEED SMALL FORWARD 6′10 AND KYRYELO FESENKO AND ALMOND PLAYING NEXT YEAR GOOD JOB JAZZ IF LAKERS DIDN’T PICKED GASOL THEY WOULDN GO ANYWHERE DONT PICK ON BOOZER GUY CAN PLAY REFS CALLED STUPID FOULS ON HIM

PJ on May 18th, 2008 said...

The Jazz lost because they don’t play consistent defense, plain and simple. Boozer is on, and then he’s off. Blaming the officials is so typical of a losing fan. Did you, or did you not, see the Jazz throw 3 shots up during the last few seconds of the game? The officials did not shoot those shots. As for gloating Laker fans, let them gloat. It is part of the spoils of victory. Allow yourself to imagine this forum if the Jazz defeated the Lakers. When the Jazz actually win something someday, Laker fans will have to suck it up. For now, just stop your whining and move on.

Boozer is a bit soft, AK47’s vacation visa dilemma was a total distraction and an example of bad decisions, and William’s seemed like the only Jazz player ready to play on every end of the court.

    GO LAKERS !!!!

My sister and I were at game 6 and had a night we will never forget. Like a true fan,we were wearing our Laker gear and we were wearing it very proudly and we are from LA so we are true fans and have been for over 45 years.

The Jazz fans,I mean idiots, that had the seats next to her were upset and “not drunk enough” to sit next to Laker fans. The game hadnt even started and when the Lakers pulled away, the fans left.True fans no doubt.

The place is loud no doubt but if the Jazz are counting on the loud noise, hostile fans, and general ignorance of their fans to help them win, they are making a huge mistake.

After the Laker win and countless insults being hurled at us,we decided to stay in the arena.A smart move on our part.We honestly were fearful of the hostile fans.

The Jazz lost the series because of their poor play not because of refs.38.1% shooting, same amount of fouls for both teams, and the Jazz had at least 13 more rebounds. The game was lost by those stats.

Very foolish to run the replays of all of the calls. The place is hostile enough without agitating the fans further.Bad move ESA.

Enjoy the summer Jazz fans and enjoy watching the Lakers parade!!!

“cobykarlrules!!! ” Your a moron. First off the refs did a horrible job throughout the series. Kb24 would get the ball and drive to the hoop and if he screwed up it was a foul on us. Heaven forbid he actually made a mistake. The Jazz lost and I can deal with that. But you guys are dumb if you think the Lakers are going to be World Champions for that many years in a row. Dumb or just plain Stupid. The beauty of us Jazz fans are we would never say something so stupid. Sorry but the Jazz are twice the team the Lakers will ever be. Might not have shown up on the final score but hey Lakers wont get buy Hornets/Spurs anyways. and if they do? Celtics or Pistons will take them down. Please just stay away from the Jazz website unless your a fan of the Jazz. Coming in here to gloat showes immaturity and childness. Sorry to hurt your feelings we know how you Laker fans are very sensitive but hey truth hurts buddy. Peace IM out….

World Championships won by the Lakers : 14
World Championships won by the Jazz : 0

I love the Jazz but Boozer does suck, he disappears against bigger guys (happened all season) and cant play D. You know your bad when Okur is a better defender! Honestly the referee’s were bad but Game 6 was all the Jazz fault. You cant wait till the fourth quarter to show up and then complain when you lose. They need more consistency and a big guy in the middle to back up Okur and we will be ok. If we didn’t lose Game 6. I’m convinced they would have blown us out in Game 7(Hell they almost blew us out here). Don’t accuse me of being a crappy fan either. I watched every game and just call it like I see it. We should just keep getting better.

Mcjknell on May 20th, 2008 said...

“D Finch” Every Laker fan throws out that the Lakers have won 14 Championships and the Jazz have won none. Well great point except that shows the the Lakers were a good team Decades ago. Your confused because that means nothing for the present. Just because a team won a championship doesnt mean they are a better team? If thats how that works that makes the San Fransico 49ers a way better team than the San Diego Chargers….. PLEASE… That argument is horrible. SO LONG D FINCH….. See ya next year….

wickedcricket on May 20th, 2008 said...

the jazz lost yea yea yea! about the ref situation it was unfair yea both teams had even in numbers of fouls called that doesn’t matter, what matters is that when they were called what they were called for and who they went to. i hope we all know that if the defender is in the little circle underneith the basket and touches the offensive player with the ball it’s a blocking foul no matter what even if his feet are planted and a lot those were called on the jazz offensively as a charge. and kobe bryant i admit he is a good player but his attitude toward the game sucks he wants everything his way i swear that’s why he averages one foul a game and 15 free throw attempts a game. he gets away all the time with swiping the defender away to get around and that’s an offensive foul. It’s a joke when threw that ball at the hoop and turned into a crazy shot. he did’nt have scwurm like a baby and get his way i watched the replay he was not even knicked that’s all i have to say

wickedcricket on May 20th, 2008 said...

stupid laker fans your just like KB24 kry babys 24 hours a day nice said (Mcjknell) im celtics fan til’ next season because them and the jazz share the NBDL team utah flash down in orem. PM24 (paul millsap) sound like a real player kobe one mvp for his scoring thats it he could of got it any other year. but david stern gave it to him so he would stop crying D-will or cp3 deserved to get it both double doubles and sick moves without wrapping around other players. and plus players don’t play the game unless the refs let them the jazz are physical on defense but to an extent even if I wasn’t a jazz fan and more experienced like them I would’ve called the right calls like my dad in high school refing. he wouldn’t let any bulshit out of the mouth from any one straight up T! and he’ll actually run unlike the nba refs the only respectable player on the lakers squad is derek fisher he went back to lakers because he knew the team and for better medical care for his daughter he could’ve went to the clippers same city same arena half of the same fans come on but past is the past, morris almond almond joy will be ready see you next year from casa grande arizona im out.

Since the playoff loss of the Utah Jazz this past month I have heard time and time again that “Boozer did nothing!” and “We should get rid of Boozer!” Ironically these statements are being made from the same un-realistically crazed Jazz fans who just a month earlier were comparing him to Karl Malone.

Should Carlos Boozer be to blame? I mean this was the Jazz year, Charles Barkley called them, “The best team in the West.” Surely if Carlos would have played better The Jazz would still be in the playoffs? It must, therefore be his fault that they got knocked out and he should be traded the first chance they get.

This is an absurd attitude and is simply not true. The fact that the Jazz got knocked out of the playoffs is not his fault. The Jazz just don’t have enough offensive threats on the court to take the pressure off of Boozer and Williams. Boozer had an exceptional season and a good post season. This post season he averaged 16 points a game, and had an amazing 12 rebounds per game with the only person beating him out in that category is the 4 time NBA champion Tim Duncan. This obviously is not enough, and he needs to do more, but unfortunately will not be able to until a third offensive threat emerges or is acquired. Lets face it, Mehmet Okur and Kyle Korver are big time shooters, but hardly an offensive threat that teams need to worry about. They can barely run down the court much less create their own shot off the dribble.

Think if the Jazz would have acquired Pau Gasol instead of the Lakers, does anyone doubt that they would still be in the playoffs? Imagine if they went out and got a David West, or a Lamar Odom. They would be a force to be reckoned with and most likely would be playing for a Championship.

Boozer is not the reason the Jazz loss and crazy Utah fans should not use him as a scape goat for their inability to get a ring. The failure of the Jazz to go the distance this year is once again due to the fact that the jazz management is unwilling sign another marquee player. Boozer is not the problem, the problem is that the Jazz is currently a two man team and they need help, at least more help than they are currently getting.

dave on May 31st, 2008 said...

    Well said Real sports fan
i agree with everything you said except the fact that the jazz do try to sign other marquee player i remember about 4 years ago they tried to sign maggette from the clippers only to get out bid by the clippers but i do agree if the jazz could get another legit scorer/defender this team would be the team to beat not the lakers

i hate how all the laker fan come to a utah jazz message board to talk s*** about how the lakers beat us well if it wasnt for them getting gasol mid season the lakers wouldnt have even made it past the first round and for sure wouldnt have had the top seed

i am very proud of what the utah jazz have done in just two season, two seasons ago they were a lottery team now they are a NBA elite again and that is thanks to great drafts and D-Will he is the next John stockton but in my opinion going to be better CONGRATS ON A FANTASTIC SEASON JAZZ

and to all the laker fans good luck in the finals but i hope boston wins GO KG
