Jason Hart was a starter the year before last, when he played with the Clippers. Of course he wasn’t the first choice for the Clippers. Livingston had gone down injured. Cassell too, but the point of the story is that Hart was seeing a lot of playing time. He wasn’t playing too badly either.
It’s hard to go from playing consistently to riding the bench hoping for your team to be up by 20 points going into the last 2 minutes so you can get a little playing time – even if it is just clean up. Players just want to play, and Jason Hart was not happy with his role riding the pine.
If he wanted to, he could have opted out and made a run at a backup point guard spot on another team. It’s a risky move though. Remember that Hart, his agent, and the Jazz front office thought Hart would be the perfect fit to backup D-Will. Fans never really agreed and midway through the season Coach Sloan didn’t either.
I am sure the nearly 2.5 million dollar guarantee entered into his decision as well. Plus, he fits in with the team – personally. Off the court he is a likable guy, and he plays and practices hard. All in all the situation could be worse. A lot worse.
Whether the Jazz front office shares the sentiment is another story entirely. They are not without options though. One year contracts are easier to move, easier to buy out, easier to cut. It will be interesting to see what options the Jazz take.
