Roy Hibbert

Roy Hibbert (John McDonnell - The Washington Post)
Roy Hibbert has to be the fan favorite. Partly because he is 7’2” – partly because more than half the mock drafts say he would be a good fit – Partly because he is educated and a student of the game. But is he the right guy?

There is a reason he is not being projected as a lottery pick. The big question is how he will adjust to the speed of the NBA game. Before you discount that last statement, consider this - Last year after the Rocky Mountain Revue I asked the newest Jazz first round pick Morris Almond, what the biggest adjustment was going to be for him. He didn’t even think about it when he answered “Speed of the game.” He noted that it just wasn’t the players moving faster, but the shot clock, the offense, the defense – the whole game. Lots of tall guys have flamed out of the league for that very reason (by the same measure no one should still be questioning what a special player Mark Eaton was). Despite what some people think – the Jazz play at one of the faster paces in the NBA.

All that being said, Hibbert will be solid. But so is Jarron Collins, the 11th to 12th guy on the roster. If you are looking for Hibbert to come in and contribute next year – it’s not going to happen. It’s not his fault, the Jazz are just deep. If drafted he will play more minutes with the Flash then he will for the Jazz.

There is a lot to like about Roy Hibbert. He does not need to develop, but he is going to be closer to Jarron Collins than he will be to a Mark Eaton type player. Then again Jarron Collins was once the starting center. He is certainly on the Jazz radar but I don’t think the odds are high the Jazz go after him. First off, if you follow rumors – he should be gone when the Jazz pick 23rd. Secondly because If you are looking down the road a year or two, there are guys that if developed right – could better fit the Jazz style of play and help them win games.

Don’t be surprised if the Jazz take Hibbert. Don’t be shocked if they don’t .

Charlotte just nabbed the 20th pick from Denver. Rumor has it they did so to get Hibbert.

Most of the recent buzz I’ve been hearing has Hibbert going higher. Actually, I think his college teammate Patrick Ewing Jr. might be a better fit for the Jazz because he’s not as plodding and because he should still be on the board when the Jazz pick in the second round.

I think the greater question is what are the Jazz going to do this offseason to pick up some much needed experience. We really need another player like Derek Fisher to help mold the team, not another young player that will sit in the D-League for a few years. The Jazz need to make some big moves, or we’re going to end up in the same spot every year…ousted by a team with more players!
