Who is my ideal free agent? I would like to see the Jazz roster look something like this…
PG Deron Williams and Ronnie Price
SG Corey Maggette, Ronnie Brewer, Morris Almond
SF Andre Iguodala, Kyle Korver, Matt Harpring or CJ Miles
PF Elton Brand, Paul Millsap, Marresse Speights
C Mehmet Okur, Kosta Koufus, Big Fes
That would mean trading Carlos Boozer to Philadelphia for Andre Iguodala and Speights. The Jazz would probably free up some cap space to be used with their mid level exception to throw at Maggette. With this team in place, I think it would be very intriguing for Elton Brand. If the Clippers thought they were going to lose Brand and wanted something in return they could do a sign and trade Brand for Kirilenko. That would keep the Jazz at the salary cap and the Clippers would at least get something.
If this could be accomplished, I think we would be raising a banner. 2008/2009 NBA Champions!!
Mike - it would be nice but impossible to do.
Philly is looking at adding Brand right now - so he might be playing with AI anyway - just in a 76er uniform.
Even if you traded Boozer you would have to get roughly the same size contract back. AI alone could end up with a bigger contract than Boozer has - so you won’t save money. Plus moving Boozer won’t move the Jazz under the cap. All they could give Maggette is the mid level exception. The Clippers don’t want to go over the luxury tax cap - which is why Brand is saying if he comes back to LA he will take less than the max. Meaning the Clips would not trade for AK, as that would put them over the limit.
I was reading Chad Ford’s comments which made me think that AI would be around $10 mil/year at most That’s roughly 2-3 million less than Boozer. That 2-3 million + mid level might be enough to attract Maggette. I have absolutely no idea about the protocol of how trades happen, this is just a Jazz fan “wishing” for the best. If they gave word to the players agents of their intents the players could consider this and I think that the proposed team would have a better chance of success than anywhere they’d be going otherwise.
Chad is good. He hears alot - but he is not always right. If AI gets 10 mil - good for philly.
Jonathan - It was fun doing the Locke show with you on Monday. I enjoyed your comments. Hope to do it again soon.
It seems that a couple of free agents that were mentioned on the show (Maggette, Pietrus) are taken. I’d still love to see the Jazz make a run at Childress or James Jones.
I’ve said before that all the trading, salary caps, trades, and so forth, make my head swim!! I do believe that the question ask about CJ is that he will get more minutes if he is here because he has already shown that when he wants something he will work really hard to improve and get it. I believe that you will see a much matured and better player again after this summer. I can’t see trading Boozer if he wants to stay. He has stated that he knows his play had been far from good the last of the season and promises to be back in better form. He and Williams have a good mental process working between them now so why start over? Look at the teams that keep trading over and over and they never really get anything going (most of the time). I am no expert or even close to one but I think O’Conner has done a good job in the past and I trust him this year.
