RMR: Catalyst for World Peace?

‘Iranians Head for the Rockies’
Recently, I spoke with someone who is somewhat in the know about many Jazz topics. We talked about the scheduling of the different teams for the Rocky Mountain Revue. This person had heard how it’s difficult to attract teams to come to Utah in the summer. It seems that a tournament in Las Vegas is a bit more attractive to folks. If I were a coach, wanting my players to focus, I would certainly want them to come to Utah versus Las Vegas. If I were a player, even though summer used to be vacation time, I think that I would want the least amount of distraction possible while I tried to impress the powers that be. Let’s face it, while it’s even crazier hot in Las Vegas than Utah, those Casino’s and, shall we call them; Dance Halls(?), have air conditioning too. Of course, there are certain distractions that don’t go away no matter where an NBA player (or potential) NBA player goes. Groupies and super fans still come out of the woodwork in any city, even without the benefit of a/c.
This leads me to the reasoning behind the invitation of the Iranian team to the tournament. While some people have kind of snickered, or complained (what with them being members of some kind of axis club), they are in fact the FIBA Asia 2007 Champion. Instead of complaining, people who can’t get their minds around supporting the invitation to a team from Iran could consider it a cultural exchange. By embracing the fact that the Iranian team will be playing in “our” tournament, people will be promoting world peace. Basketball and world peace; you couldn’t ask for anything better.

Annie,
Nicely said. I agree with all of your points. Sadly, the pull of Vegas is too strong and the incentives to go there for coaches and teams grows every year. The RMR is about basketball, period. ‘Playing’ has a few meanings in Vegas. I think we should focus on inviting teams that share our definition of playing. Translation: more international contenders equals more serious basketball.

i am excited to be covering the game that they will play versus Dallas.
Orlando’s Summer League was pretty sparce in the team participation this year as well.
The Summer League in Vegas may be how the NBA gives Sin City its “dues” as there may not be a franchise there in the foreseeable future.
I would rather go to Vegas than come to Utah, its just the way it is.
Vegas-Schmegas. bla.
i’d rather waste my money on gas.
Thanks George Bush!
Jared you made the one point I like about the summer league in Vegas - that city gets a taste of the NBA. If I were coaching it would be easy for me to disregard that and head to Utah. I would not want any distractions for my players - I could see them at full speed and have a better sense of who is best for the NBA roster. In short I would want to participate in the league which produced the greatest test and honest perspective of the players.
