The Adventure of the Two Ronnies

No, this is not another lurid Sherlock Holmes detective tale, as recounted by his fictional biographer, Dr. Watson, from the pen of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Sherlock was famous for his intellectual prowess, deductive reasoning and abductive inference, coming up with the most astounding conclusions, seemingly based on little or no information. Of course, the explanation was always “elementary Watson”, followed by the simple details.
Sherlock O’Connor, the Jazz GM, certainly is a keen observer of NBA talent and a Master Detective. He has made some shrewd moves molding a competitive, young basketball team. In retrospect, it was quite “elementary.”
This brings us to “The Adventure of the Two Ronnies.” (reduce the lighting and generate some London fog)
Ronnie Brewer was a late lottery pick, with a chance of not even being able to stick in the NBA, let alone be a productive starter. As a rookie, Fish and Giri took up most of the minutes. Ronnie’s unorthodox release and lack of confidence glared. Questions abounded. What had the great Sherlock done?
Ronnie Price was an undrafted, community college player, free agent signing, after a couple of years on the Kings bench. A half a season on the bench, behind the unproductive Jason Hart, did little to inspire confidence. Was this just another Jason Hart?
On the surface, not unlike Sherlock of old, who had a penchant to lose his concentration, especially during a morphine induced haze, Kevin could have been deemed a failure for his choices.
But, then an opportunity presented itself.
The best move Sherlock O’Connor made last year was allowing Fisher to leave. Youth, salary space, a roster spot and playing time came with his release. You can see how improved the two Ronnies are in his absence, with their increased opportunities.
Brewer’s mid-range shot became ‘money’ in the last half of the year, and will get even better, despite his unorthodox release. He was nervous during the playoffs, and his shooting suffered a little, but that shouldn’t be the case with more experience. He has worked hard and developed an NBA body…a lean, mean, springy machine. Plus, he’s still got the quick hands and now more muscle.
Price, a small SG, has adapted well to learning the point. His quickness and athletic ability have been a pleasant surprise to most of us. Sometimes he’s more exciting to watch, than the first unit.
Thanks Kevin drafting Brewer, signing Ronnie Price and letting Fish go, which opened up a roster spot and the playing time to develop their skills.
Now, Sherlock, put that funny hat back on, pull out your violin and get on to your next case…

I agree. It seems like many fans can only look at today and not ahead to coming seasons. Kevin has a crazy nack for looking ahead. At some game this year he should be honored for what he does. If he hadn’t thought that letting go of Fisher would be good for us he would have fought harder to keep him. We have a lot to be excited about and many players to evaluate next week and through the season!! Wow!!!! I did say next week.

Except for D-Wil, the Jazz have had to make do with late picks, luxury tax limits and less than spectacular trades, on the surface.
Kevin has had his share of signings and picks, which didn’t work out, but he’s done a lot, without a lot of resources.
I’m thrilled with Korver, delighted with Millsap and excited by Price. Memo remains Money, and Boozer, if he will just step up his defense, have been fantastic signings.
I’m hoping he can do something with a multiplayer, for a better player, trade, using Collins expiring contract, plus another player, pick etc, to improve the team and gain a roster spot.

Amen, I’ve said it before and will say it again. If I bought an NBA franchise O’Connor would be my first hire. I’m excited to see what Kofous will do. Although I haven’t seen anything out of him. O’Connor was sure excited when they picked him and if he really works as hard as they say he does it’ll be fun to watch him. I could see him being a Milsap rookie. Forcing them to play him!
