Hatred Defines A True Fan
Posted by James Seaman on October 13, 2008
I was reminded last weekend why I hate the Lakers so badly. At a buddy’s wedding in California, a mutual friend from a former life introduced me to her boyfriend from Los Angeles. “He’s a basketball fan, just like you,” said Jessica, conjuring images of that Chris Rock act where he makes fun of women who set their boy toys up on play dates. Jessica’s boyfriend quickly assured me of his Laker fan status, to which I immediately launched into a lament about Utah’s heartbreaking failure in Game Five of May’s playoff duel. His response? “Hmmm…I kind of remember that game. Did that series end up going six?”
That the Lakers were—or still are—a better team than the Jazz nauseates me. Yet, somehow, I can live with that. Part of giving yourself to a team means knowingly assuming the risks. No matter how promising the future appears, your team will probably not win the championship this year. You have to accept the likelihood of disappointment. No, the thing that infuriates me far more than the twelve guys wearing those stupid yellow and purple jerseys is the arrogance of their fans.
Win fourteen championships and I suppose you have the right to walk and talk with more than a dash of conceit. That doesn’t make the pill taste any less bitter to me on its way down. This Neanderthal probably didn’t even remember that his team played the Jazz. We exist far beneath his level, down here with the NBA’s bottom-feeding what-could-have-beens and never-will-bes. A Laker lover can never understand the torturous fire that burns inside Jazz fans now and always. To them, we represent just another Western Conference nobody. They rarely, if ever, think about us. But we obsess over them. It is what Nietzsche called ressenitment. The rich do not hate the poor; they either feel sorry for them or don’t think of them at all. But the poor despise the rich and think of them constantly, blaming “The Man” for their problems. While this meathead could barely remember playing us, I still find myself haunted by nearly every moment of the unfulfilled promise that became Game Five’s second half. Sure, Utah fans have the playoff conquests of Los Angeles in 1997 and 1998 to throw around in conversation with southern Californians. Those become, however, knives in a gunfight when one considers the longer view of a Jazz-Lakers argument.
The NBA, ABC, and ESPN only make it worse by fawning all over Kobe and the Lakers. Once again, Los Angeles will make a sickening number of appearances on national television this year, and each time the announcers will point out Jack Nicholson and a dozen other celebrities who sit in seats worth more than the average Utahn’s mortgage. Jazz fans, meanwhile, grind our teeth and wait impatiently for our next opportunity to finally overthrow the establishment—both its team and its hated fans.

Don’t get me started…OK, I’m started.
The Hated Lakers and their fans exude arrogance.
They are bandwagon fans, for the most part, with little knowledge, other than what they paid for that puke yellow jersey.
The Hated Lakers get almost anything they want and have the excess dinero to pay for it.
They wallow in the luxury tax and try to buy titles, with pretty good success.
They get freebies, like Pau, and veterans, like the Mail Man, at low salaries, because of the lure of tinsel town.
It’s like the spoiled rich kid, who can buy himself out of a rape charge and mollify the wife with a shiny bangle.
Did I mention, “anyone but the Hated Lakers?”

Ah, the Lakers–gotta love to hate them! Where would we be without them? Why do they always seem to rob everything from us? Malone, Fisher, and who knows how many playoff games!

My passionate hate for the Lakers will be eternal. No one gets under my skin so quickly- except for maybe one named Michael, who I would love to forget- as those stupid purple and yellow Lakers. I refuse to wear purple and yellow together, say the name Kobe and I will throw up, and don’t even get me started on my bitter feelings of the disgusting love this country, or China for that matter, has for that team. Bleh!!! They stole our Mailman, and unfortunately have won back Fisher as well. Curse their luck!! I love to pound the Lakers, and nothing would make me happier than defeating them in the Western Conference Finals launching us to our NBA title. Now that would be truly amazing.

I think the more you hate something the more you give it power…Why wallow in hate for a team that just sees you as a stepping stone?? We all know Laker fans have been spoiled and this has proliferated their ignorance for any other threat that could be brewing, but real Laker fans know the Jazz are no joke. You have to acknowledge them as currently being a good if not great team…..I can say Kobe’s name all day and it doesnt bother me because I know whole heartedly that he is one of the greatest this game has ever seen. And I can admit it, and who besides the players ever wears gold and purple together??? Too Gay…
Dont think of it is as being stole on either, Malone and Fisher are both participants in a business, however much we hate to admit it . Oh and I always see Laker fans wearing other jerseys than KBs…I saw this hottie with a Gasol one on the other day….me likey
You guys need to let go of some of that anger and relax….we got a dope team and they know it….

Amen JR Stewart. But I vivily remember owning the Lakers in our Finals runs with kobe and Shaq. Does anyone remember the 3 (a guess but it was alot) airballs Kobe shot trying to win the game his rookie year. None of our players have been indicted on rape charges. Remember Tags 11 blocks in a game and 6-7 against Shaq. I was young and barely remember, but thats how I choose to remeber the Lakers.
This year will be more of the same I feel. Then the Lakers fans can go back to where they are when they suck. No where, they disappear, you never hear anything from them. They choose a new team(like the bulls, cause the Lakers sucked when Michael was tearing it up) so they can cheer for a winner and not have their hearts broken. Jazz fans will always stand by their team even that year they had 26 wins. (But hey we got D-will out of it so I’m ok with it). Lakers fans instead of rubbing it in our face maybe you should take some lessons from us about being real fans!
PS Kobe will finish second this year in MVP to who? D-Will of course! Get use to finishing second this year alot Lakers. Don’t worry it’s only the first loser. GO JAZZ!!!!

Don’t use the word “Gay” to describe something negative. Use the word “straight”. As in….. “Yellow and purple are so “straight”.
See how ignorant that sounds?
GO JAZZ!

I echo some of the sentiment of one of the previous comments that we shouldn’t focus so much on our hatred for another team more than we focus on our love of the Jazz. Still, great rivalries add so much passion and emotion to sports.
My biggest beef with the Lakers and more specifically, Kobe, stems from the fact the fact that the media fawns over him so much. It just irritates me when people talk about the fact that he is changed and more mature…just a few years ago he was charged with rape and was responsible for running both Shaquille O’neal and Phil Jackson out of LA. Just last year, before Memphis gave the Lakers a late Christmas present in the form of Paul

Gasol, Kobe had demanded a trade out of LA. How quickly things can change, as he is now painted as a family man, a great teammate and leader, and a patriot after the Olympics. Call me cynical, perhaps my thoughts are tinged with a bit of Jazz bias, but I do not buy any of it. It is amazing how quickly someone can “change” when endorsement dollars are on the line.

For those of you complaining about Karl Malone being “stolen” away from us…..who is he anyway? I keep hearing about this Karl Malone guy. Who is that?
Sarcasm aside, who cares about Karl. It was one *censored* year and he sucked anyway at that point in his career. Plus, the Jazz were in need of rebuilding. Then who cares about Fisher. He stabbed not only Larry Miller in the back, but all of Salt Lake as well. But honestly, who gives a *censored*. We have Ronnie Brewer now and Jazz fans love him. He’s easily 10x better then Fisher and this is only like his 3rd year.
To Brewer: You’re the *censored* man and I hope you have a killer year.
Let’s look to this seasons Jazz fans and watch every game. Support them and go buy license plate frames and car window stickers and hats and crap. I know that sounds cheesy and lame, but I honestly believe that I’m the only one out there, where ever I go, that has a Jazz hoodie or a Jazz license plate frame. Support our team! Get in the spirit and wear your gear!

Our hatred of the Lakers is all consuming and without limit. This season arrogance, privilege and entitlement will be cast into an abyss without escape. Let the great basketball wars begin!

Hate is a very passionate emotion and is the perfect word to describe our feelings towards the Lakers. Why do you think our fans are considered some of the best in the league? It’s because no matter what our team is #1 in our eyes/hearts. So if you don’t want to “hate” the Lakers fine but maybe you should reevalute your love of the Jazz.
Shethehustla on October 17, 2008 said:
Dude… no one loves the jazz more than me!!! Ask somebody, anybody…
I am realistic enough to admit that the hate I hold for another team or player must be transcended for out team to be anything, we will always just be their little brother who didnt get enough attention growing up if we keep this insecure mindset for our most hated, the Fakestas have a good team, I can acknowledge this but I think the jazz are good enough to beat any team. The Rockets think Utah is their #1 rival and look at how that is working out for them….no bueno.

The problem is, it’s nearly impossible to have one of these arguments. Here is a list of things Lakers fans know:
1. Kobe exists.
2. Kobe is good.
3. Kobe allegedly used to play with this player named “Shaq”.
4. Kobe won several titles, obviously not because of “Shaq”.
5. Kobe was probably somehow involved in those “old school” Laker teams that apparently won titles.
That’s it. I dare you to find a Laker fan in ESA who’s not wearing a Bryant jersey. And no, one with “Kobe” on the back instead does not count.
