‘Is Screech a Jazz fan too?’
‘Is Screech a Jazz fan too?’

The two things I loved most as a kid were the Utah Jazz and Saved by the Bell, so connections between the two come pretty natural for me.  For those who have a harder time seeing the correlation, you’ll just have to hear me out.

As I anxiously anticipate the start of the season, a particular family favorite Saved by the Bell moment comes to mind.  The short version is that Jessie Spano is overwhelmed with all she has to do, she ends up abusing caffeine pills to stay awake to get everything done, and by the end of the week, she completely crashes.  When Zack comes to pick her up for her “Hot Sundae” performance and announces it’s time to go, she freaks out “Time? There’s never any time!” Then she burst into a frantic rendition of ”I’m so excited!  I’m so excited!  I’m so… scared…” A real classic moment.

So now that we are just days away from the start of the season, I find myself wanting to scream out everything Jessie Spano just said. Over the past two seasons, I have had all the time in the world to devote to my Utah Jazz passion.  I can’t remember missing a game, and I prided myself on knowing all the idiosyncrasies of Utah Jazz basketball—I knew to expect Brewer in the first and third and Korver in the second and fourth.  I knew Hart would come in to reprieve Deron with 2 minutes left in the first and completely botch the 2 for 1 (luckily that came to an end as all good things must do).  I knew Pace and Thurl would banter at halftime, Boler would urge us to “buckle up” to start the fourth, and Jerry would be as vague as possible in his post-game presser.  I knew it all.

Unfortunately now, I find myself with evening obligations outside of Utah Jazz basketball and I’m freaking out.  How will I find the time to be a True Blue Jazz fan??? I imagine there are others out there who find themselves in the same predicament.  Will we be mis-pegged as poser-fans?  Are we setting ourselves up to be like those floozy Lakers fans James recently blogged about who are adamant they are fans then blurt out crap like, “That series went to six, right?”  I couldn’t bear to be considered that kind of a fan.

Of course I’m excited for the season, but I’m scared that I won’t be able to be the overly obsessed fan that I’ve always been.  More than ever, I’m counting on fellow fans to keep me abreast of the unique quirks that make up our 2008-2009 ball club. Thank goodness for the emergence of the blogging world to inform me of anything and everything Jazz.

You need to invest in a DVR. It saves my life!! I had to get used to not watching games live, and it didn’t bother me to know the game was already over, unless I knew the result of the game. Everyone around me knew not to say a word about the game. :)

I too am so excited for the season to start! I just bought my league pass ($190 dollars later) and have already got the schedule down!

Jennifer I agree about the DVR , I have had to use mine a few times too .
Mallory I would like to think that bwcause we are not able to watch every game that we are not true Jazz fans . I have been a fan since they first came to Utah . I have never been able to see every game in a season yet . I have only been to one home game , but it was a first rounder the year they went to the Finals the first time . But anyone that knows me knows that I really can get carried away when watching the games . I am always on an emotional roller coaster evrytime .
I am also glad that I have found this site and I can read the blogs that are written by other fans like us . It is so cool .
I hope that all that we have been hoping for will come to pass this season , go Jazz !!!!!!!

DVDs are great!!! Unless you are not of the electronic age. You set the machine, attend the necessary family function, and run home to turn it on and…………………you see Matlock and other programs. Guess we need a lesson from our son.

I can definitely say I am in the position Jesse is in. I’m so excited, yet so scared for what this upcoming season holds. Have we really done much to improve our team from last year and its mistakes? Who knows, but i’m hoping for the best!!! and Deron better be back for opening night… Memo can’t intimidate everyone with his beard!!!! ;) none the less, BRING ON THE 2008-2009 UTAH JAZZ SEASON!!!!

Thanks for the reassurance Jay D. I just needed to know that there are other big time fans out there who have to miss a game or two (or three or four :) ). I guess if we are taking the time to read and write blogs, we must be big fans, right? Show me the title! –Mal

Mal – there are particular certainties that I know to be fact in my life. The sun will rise everyday. One plus one equals two. Mallory Meyer knows more about the Jazz than anyone I know. If there is a will there is a way. I know that if anyone can balance a hectic schedule and keep abreast of the Jazz intricacies, it is you my dear. I too am having similar anxiety about myself and the Suns. But let’s have faith! We make time for the things we really love, right? We can do it! I can’t wait for you to come visit and go to a Suns game and experience what it’s like on “planet orange”. Your fave purple and orange supporter, Lo.
