Kids’ Rules…3 seconds is a problem

Every year there is a discussion in our class about what rules will govern our class conduct.  I let the kids pick the rules, and they usually come up with what they know to be appropriate behavior.  In an extension of that process, I asked my students about other situations where people have to follow rules. Naturally, I had to lead them to think about basketball teams who play in the NBA (being a JazzBot class).

I asked my students to write about what rules they would add or delete from NBA play if they were the commissioner.  Eleven-year-olds have opinions but not a depth of understanding about how everything works.  Read on, you will see what I mean.

Lizzy – I think that every NBA player on a team should get to play 15 times a year.  I don’t thinkk that is is very fair that some players don’t get to play very much.

Nick- I would take out the 3-second rule and make it be 6 seconds instead.

Sarah- I would remove the 3-second violation rule because that would be a hard thing to remember if you played in theNBA.

Cris- I would take ou the 3-second rule because it is too hard to follow up on. I would also update the traveling rule, to be two steps and then shoot.

Ben- I would add a penalty for ballhogs and show-offs because it tends to make the players cockey. Players should be able to keep the ball only 10 seconds and have to pass. This would make the game more enjoyable to watch.

Will- I would add a rule that says if a coach comes onto the floor during the game that he or she should be automatically ejected and the team is charged with a technical foul.  I would also add that coaches only have to get one technical foul and then they are ejected.

Meg- I would make a rule that a referee may not call a foul for a completely pointess reason. I would also make a rule that I get an autographed basketball from the Jazz players every month.

“a referee may not call a foul for a completely pointless reason” – that is how we all feel isn’t it… :)

I like the autograph rule but can we broaden it to participants in JAZZBOTS?!
