The NBADL: Where All-Stars Happen

I received the funniest email from the NBA the other day.  I don’t know about you, but checking my email is a highlight of my day.  And I should probably say “highlights” of my day because yes, sadly, I am one of those people who looks at my inbox more than a few times in one 24-hour period.  Most of the time I just delete the seemingly impersonal ones, but for one reason or another, I opened this one.  And what a blessing.

It read a little something like this.

Dear M, (apparently David Stern knows me only as “M”)

The D-League Showcase is coming up so make sure to vote for your D-League All-Stars!

Sincerely,

The NBA: Where Caring Happens

I wish someone could have taken a picture to capture the completely perplexed look on my face.  Did I read that right? My D-League what?  If there ever was an oxymoron it’d have to be that—D-League All-Stars.  I’m so confused.  So would Mo or Fes fit in that category?  I mean, I know they aren’t exactly D-leaguers right now, but maybe they wish they were so they could receive this totally awesome award.  I really want to talk with Mo right now so I can ask him, “Would you rather be a DNP coach’s decision for the Jazz or a Utah Flash D-League All-Star?” I’m just wondering if his answer would surprise me.

This D-League is a curious thing.  Everyone is performing with the hopes of catching their big break.  Coaches, players, and dancers alike would all kill to make it to the big-time NBA level, though few of them ever really do.  You’ve gotta commend them for their hard work, though, and for continuing to chase after their dreams.  Not enough people have dreams these days.

Now all this dream talk is making me regret that I never actually made it over to the voting site.  I could have helped a hard-working player feel like maybe he was on the verge of his big break. What a dream-crusher I am.  Or maybe not.  Maybe I saved a player from thinking his big break was coming, when in reality it wasn’t at all.  After all, I would have been clicking on names at random, because let’s be honest, I haven’t a clue who any of those people are.

Nevertheless, I invite you to join me in Orem for the Showcase (and yes, I’m really going to try to get out there),

–Mal

I have to agree with you on e-mail sometimes highlighting a day. I never got this one from NBA – with a little warning I think I would have planned to attend part of this.

Flash are 2-0 with Fess starting at center.
