Taking Responsibility

One of the most difficult things for 6th grade students to learn is how to make the transition from being a child and becoming a “tween.” As a child, most of your needs are met by someone else, a trusted adult such as a parent or teacher.  As a “tween,” I help my students learn to accept more responsibility for their own actions, work completion, success and and failures.

This year some of the Jazz team members have had to take on more responsibility than they may have anticipated.  I used them as an example of how people have to be prepared, ready, willing and capable of performing at a higher level.  With so many injuries to key players, other players have had to fill in the missing parts or be a part of the team’s failure to continue in a positive manner.  I encouraged my class to view this as an opportunity to grow, not a reason to fail.

As they looked at the team so far this season, they were able to see people grow in their abilities. Here are a few of their observations.

Easton – ” I think Paul Milsap has brought so much to the team this year. He is usually the top scorer for the team.  It is amazing that he is doing good.  I think it is amazing how, with all these injuries, we are still out there.  If Carlos Boozer and all the other injured players would get healthy, I think we would dominate in the West.  GO JAZZ!”

Ben- “I think that Paul Milsap has stepped up in Boozer’s place.  He has been playing hurt and still puttin’ in the points, almost as much as Boozer.  He has been a contributing team player.”

Will- ” I think Paul Milsap has contributed the most because he hasn’t been out.  He has also stepped up when the Jazz needed him.”

Lizzy- ” I think Paul Milsap has contributed to the team a lot.  He has only been out for injuries for a couple of games and I think he palyed very well this year.”

I think the kids got the idea.  Congratulations to Paul, we noticed.
