Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen
Posted by Mallory Meyer on January 27, 2009
No I’m not a teenager and no I’m not a drama queen (those roles are played by McCall in our family), but I do have a confession. Few people know about this particular secret of mine because I only tell those I can trust. So seeing as I’m among friends here at the Bot, I’m going to share with you what I consider to be my deepest, darkest secret–I LOVE Gregg Popovich. And I actually don’t even hate the Spurs.
I used to be your traditional Spurs hater. They always win, they always whine, and they always have this ridiculous psychological power over the Jazz. Playing the Spurs in San Antonio? Chalk that up as a for sure loss. I’m an emotional fan, so that meant hating the Spurs.
Well, one day those emotions got misdirected. I have this super competitive Suns fan friend who hates the Jazz. And I mean HATE, and he has the most ridiculous reasons for his hatred. So a new set of emotions came into play when the Suns played the Spurs last post-season. My competitiveness came out and I found myself wanting with all my heart for that Suns kid to be disappointed. I didn’t even realize I was doing it but I found myself cheering for the Spurs. I got this weird, sick satisfaction when Duncan made that three. And when the Spurs played the Lakers–it was all over from there. You would have thought I was a life-long Spurs fan.
Truth is, I love Gregg Popovich. He’s an unbelievable coach and has personality to go with it. I loved his Hack-a-Shack prank to start this season. I loved when he told Brent Barry to “pull your pants down if you have to” to get Duncan to notice him wide open on the wing. I love that he honestly said that the first loss in LA “Hurt like Hell.” I love that he has taken Jerry Sloan’s system and mastered it. If you like good basketball you’ve got to like Pop.
One of my favorite Deron Williams quotes went something like this: “Everyone always talks about how boring the Spurs are, but I’d kill to be boring and win championships.” So there’s the motivation. Deron’s down with it, so I’m down too.
So here’s to looking a little more like the Spurs–rings included.
Hoping for a dynamite win tonight,
–Mal

I completely agree with Mal. Pop has stated over and over as coach and GM he built the Spurs using the Jazz as a model.
Andy – I would argue that his inclusion of the three point shot is in fact perfecting the Jazz system.

Who cares if it’s boring to watch? Whether you have an 8ft tall center, shoot everything from half court, or flop at the slightest bit of skin contact from another player…the objective is to win. That’s the beauty of sport, you can win in many different ways. I agree, Popovich outcoaches Sloan just about everytime we play them.

I always viewed the Spurs as the arch-nemesis that you may not like, but always respect. They are also a small market team, so they have that in common with the Jazz. And I’d rather see the Spurs win another championship than the Lakers…any day.

What I’m about to say may be classified as blasphame in this setting but I believe it’s true. I got thinking today can you imagine Memo in a Spurs Uni. He would fit thier system perfectly. They play all these dumb crapy players at “Center” (Duncan is really the Center, He’s just in Denial) Memo would make their team amazing. I say this because I could see it happening. Anyone who believes our team can be just as good without Boozer is on crack. I think the Jazz should resign Millsap and Boozer and let Memo go. i love Memo, but I also believe that Kosta could turn into a very good player with range. Not as good as Memo, but Millsap makes up the difference. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Jazz let Memo go because its the lesser of the 3 evils.

I too, like the Spurs. I have always though that Parker is not given the credit he deserves, and Ducan is my favorite non-Jazz player by a long shot. What a game tonight..too bad we weren’t the ones to win!

No, I do not have to like Pop, and I don’t have to respect the Spurs. I fear them, they’re good. But I hate them. With a passion. With all the left-over agression that hasn’t been spent on hating BYU and the Lakers. And don’t tell me how the Spurs do it the right way or anything else because hatred is not about logic. It is blind emotion. The dark-hearted twin of love (and we love the Jazz for blind, illogical reasons). My heart longs–indeed pains–for the days when the Jazz would knock the Mermaid and his softies out of the playoffs every other year.

Jenn….I agree that Parker gets overlooked because of Duncan and besides, Parker is pretty easy oin the eyes!!!!

Watching the Spurs game I came up with a possible trade possibility for the Jazz. I feel that the Jazz need a defensive player like Bruce Bowen. How about Kyle Korver for Raja Bell. They are probably equal on offense but Bell is superior on defense and toughness. I think that their salariies are pretty close to the same.

Alright Jazzbot community…. i am NOT a drama queen!!!!!
But i do agree with you Mal. The whole game i just kept thinking, “Gosh, they are so dang good!” Then i saw Ginobli…. and I reconsidered everything.
Needless to say, Pop is a great coach, and I love how he knows when the right time to call a timeout is.

In all fairness, I’ll vouch that McCall really isn’t a drama queen–it just went too well with the title. Love you Call

I hate the Spurs, like James, for completely illogical reasons. Blind emotion. The one thing that I don’t like for a completely valid reason is Ginobli. I HATE FLOPPING (even when Jaron Collins does it) and even though Ramin is right and the object is to win, there is still a fair classy way to do it in my opinion. Invalid reasons…I hate Parker cause he is that good, that little man breaks down defenses by getting into the lane ALL THE TIME. I hate Duncan cause he is a whiner and cause he is that good, stupid bank shot.

Papa Meyer,
I loved Raja Bell once, but I think his best days have passed him by. Truth is, the Jazz picked wrong when they elected to give Gordon Giricek a four-year deal in the summer of 2004. With better foresight, the Jazz would have stashed that cash and used it to retain Bell when he became a free agent following the 2005 season. The Jazz could have used Bell’s toughness and defensive ability in the 2007 Conference Finals against San Antonio. Remember the time Bell put Kobe Bryant on the floor and then Bryant said something about wanting to get into the octagon to fight Bell? Awesome.

I disagree. I hate the Spurs. Their entire game is absurdly simple. Drive with either Manu or Parker, then dish out to the wing for the three. Another fun option their offense features is pass the ball to Duncan, then have him pass it out to the wing for three.
They have two guys at the top of the perimeter(Parker and Manu), Duncan down low, and random 3 point shooters they find in either corner. That’s it.
This isn’t J-Slo’s system. He hates the three, and even makes Korver move. The Spurs don’t move. It’s just so obnoxious.
