5 Trades for Boozer
Posted by Keith Haney on January 28, 2009

Look. There is no way the current Jazz roster is going to be back next season as is. Not even close. There is a major log-jam at the 4 spot and a gaping hole at the 3. The Jazz are about to have three guys who play power forward and would start for more than half the teams in the league. Of course, I’m speaking of Carlos Boozer, Andrei Kirilenko, and Paul Milsap. It’s time to trade one of them and that one should be Boozer. What you want is a solid small forward that can play some defense and shoot from the outside. Here are five trades I would make with a couple of things taken into account first.
* Utah isn’t trading within the Northwest division and probably not with any Western playoff contenders this season. Therefore, no Boozer for Odom trade ideas.
* Utah isn’t going to go over the cap or kill their ability to sign Millsap. I’ve tried to take that into account here.
* Utah isn’t going to get top value for Boozer. He’s been injured and can opt out after this season. Not many teams are willing to pay a ton for a player like that. These are all contingent on Boozer playing a game before the trade deadline. Without that, no trade happens.
* I’m not looking to save the current season. It’s hard to imagine the Jazz putting together a run to challenge the Lakers this year after all of these injuries. One of the trades below might miraculously do that, but I’m really looking ahead to next year and beyond. I’m trying to think mostly long term here. If all I cared about was this season, I would just leave the current team in place and roll the dice when injuries are over.
1) Boozer and CJ Miles for Vince Carter.
Why it works for New Jersey: They would get back a young shooting guard/small forward in CJ Miles to help build on with Devin Harris. They would also get the opportunity to pay and retain Boozer at the end of the season – something that seems possible in a big market like that for Boozer. Seems like a good nucleus for them.
Why it works for Utah: They get a player who can work from the wing and give the Jazz an awesome offensive threat. Can you imagine a lineup of Williams, Brewer, Carter, Millsap, and Okur? I think that would make them a solid contender for this year and next season too. I use to think a trade for VC wouldn’t work because he wouldn’t fit in Sloan’s system. He’s changed this year with the Nets though and seems like he really wants to be a team player.
PS – I stole this trade idea from John Hollinger on ESPN but changed it up a bit by throwing in CJ Miles to help balance things out. He stated that the trade works straight up but it doesn’t according to their trade machine.
2) Boozer for John Salmons and Bobby Jackson.
Why it works for Sacramento: They are trying to rebuild around a young team that really senters around Kevin Martin. Giving them Boozer would free up cap space for them at the end of the year. They could resign him (unlikely) or look elsewhere as they would be flush with cash with their other expiring contracts. Also, they drafted Donte Greene, a small forward, last year so they would be able to put him on the court in Salmons’ absence and build for the future.
Why it works for Utah: The Jazz would get a great defender/scorer in Salmons who is wasting his prime in Sacramento. The guy is good – especially for what he makes ($6m). Watch him when you get a chance. They would also get Bobby Jackson’s expiring contract which they could use the money on to sign Millsap in the offseason.
3) Boozer for Richard Jefferson
Why it works for Milwaukee: Their season just officially ended when they lost Redd to a knee injury so why not build for next year and beyond? I don’t believe that Boozer would resign with them, but they would at least have some cap space for ‘09 without Jefferson on the books. He hasn’t really fit in there anyways.
Why it works for Utah: Jefferson is a great complimentary player at the 3 spot. This is what the Jazz need. He has been subpar this season, but would be a big upgrade at the 3 compared to someone like Corey Maggette – a guy the Jazz were high on in years past. This may be the best type of player the Jazz can get for someone like Boozer at this point. I just can’t see the Jazz getting an All-Star caliber player back in return.
4) Boozer for Zaza Pachulia and Marvin Williams
Why it works for Atlanta: They need desperate help up front. I don’t know what this would do to Al Horford when he comes back, but it would certainly help their team this year and I think they could move Horford to the 5 and keep Boozer at the 4. Add in Joe Johnson, Mike Bibby, and Josh Smith and you have one heck of a startling lineup. It would be very similar to what Philly is trying with Elton Brand and Marreese Speights, only with better players all around for Atlanta. Worst case scenario, they let Boozer go at the end of the season and have more flexibility to sign a free agent. They looze Marvin Williams, but would probably part with him in exchange for the chance to resign a big name like Boozer.
Why it works for Utah: Similar to the Sacramento trade, this gives the Jazz a decent small forward with some upside potential at a decent value ($6m) in Williams and an extra big man for the rest of this season in Pachulia off the bench. Next season they could resign resign both players plus Millsap or let both of the acquisitions go and try to play in the free agent market.
5) Boozer for Gerald Wallace
Why it works for the Bobcats: They get a big man and low post scoring threat that they haven’t seem to get out of Okafor. Again, they also get the chance to resign Boozer or let him go. Larry Brown seems to be in charge down there, not Michael Jordan. So he can build the Bobcats in his image. Wallace doesn’t appear to be in the cards going forward there under Brown.
Why it works for the Jazz: They get a great defensive small forward in Wallace for a little cheaper than Boozer currently costs and way cheaper than he would cost if they wanted to resign him. Wallace can also score and slash to the basket. In fact, all of the small forwards I’ve recommended here can get to the basket but also spread the floor for D-Will and Millsap to work when needed. I would love to see a lineup of Williams, Brewer, Wallace, Millsap, and Okur. That leaves a bench of Knight, Korver, Miles (or Harpring), AK, and Koufos. Not a bad rotation.
Bonus: Five more trades. Less analysis:
a. Boozer for Rudy Gay and Darko Milicic - Not sure Memphis would part with Gay though.
b. Boozer, Collins, and Morris Almond for Shawn Marion – This has been discussed to death.
c. Boozer for Hedo Turkoglu and Brian Cook – Can’t see Orlando messing with success.
d. Boozer for Antawn Jamison – Could he play the 3? Would Utah want his contract? Caron Butler would be a better fit in Utah, but Washington won’t part with him.
e. Boozer for Andres Nocioni and Ben Gordon – Let Gordon go after the season.

Boozer for Kirk Hinrich and Tyrus Thomas. A solid back up point guard that can also play the two Tyrus Thomas can play the 4 and 5 and would be an intimidating shot blocker that the Jazz desperately need after seeing them get eaten alive by Nene Hilario and Tim Duncan.

Before we concede that the Jazz are going to lose Boozer no matter what, we should look at the facts: Without Carlos, we are not even a homecourt team in the playoffs. Am I mad about some of the things he said? Sure. But all emotion aside, the guy has not hit his prime, and the decision to trade him just to trade him is a bad one. He has never once said he does not want to be in Utah, he just said he wants to get paid. Well Utah might pay him. The Jazz are about winning, and Carlos Boozer wins.
Also, AK has not consistently played PF in a number of years. He is more of a 3, and has only played the position lately because of Boozer’s absense. In all honesty, I love AK, but he is way over-paid. If the Jazz need to get rid of one contract, that is the one I would vote for. There are a lot of teams out there that might offer Booz max money. No one would even consider doing the same for AK, yet as it stands, he is getting paid that way.
Brian McCann on January 28, 2009 said:
What if you could give AK’s contract to Boozer and Boozers to Millsap? That would solve the issue. Plus there is already talk from the coaching staff that they are going to move Paul to the three when Booz comes back.

I think the Jazz are best off riding out the rest of the season. First, and most obvious, they need to get healthy. After the all-star break we will get AK and CBooz back. With everyone healthy, we are bound to get the 6th of 7th spot in the playoffs, and who knows, maybe get a little momentum and make some noise in the playoffs. This upcoming offseason is when we should make our moves. I like the idea of signing and trading. I think we will get a lot more in return if we sign and trade.
Here are some proposed ideas:
-Sign and trade Caros Boozer at the end of the season for Chris Bosh, or Amare Stoudemire.
(PHX, or TOR would be willing to trade a 20-10 guy for another 20-10 guy, especially since both of those two will most likely want to leave PHX and TOR at the end of the year.)
This would obviously leave us with too many big men.
-Therefore I would sign and trade Memo Okur and one of our small forwards i.e., Harpring, or C.J., for a stud three guard (someone like Joe Johnson)
I think given the right situation, someone will want a center who shoots threes like Memo for a long term deal, which he would have.
The reason why I think the Jazz would be able to sign and trade for a lot better talent is because Bosh, Stoudemire, Johnson, etc. will be in the last year of their contracts. Teams will be looking to get something in return for them instead of just letting them test the waters of free agency.
If the Jazz signed, lets say Bosh and Johnson, we would be serious title contenders, and therefore, these guys would more likely want to stay on a championship caliber team, instead of leave in the summer of 2010.
I know it’s far fetched, but it just an idea. Imagine DWill, Brewer, Joe Johnson, Millsap, Bosh, and Korver, AK, Koufus of the bench.

To me, Kirilenko is more of a 3 than a 4…he’s just being stuck in the 4 spot due to Boozer’s injury. For that reason, I don’t like the idea of trading for a 3, I’d rather trade Okur out for a better 5. But ignoring that:
1) Hell no. For one, Carter is way too injury prone and getting up there in years. Two, it’s going to cost us. And three, he doesn’t fit any better into Sloan’s system than Miles… and I’m a firm believer that Miles will develop into a player that will bring a lot to this team….if people would just give him a chance.
2) Looks okay but I don’t see Sacramento biting.
3) Don’t like it, I don’t see Richard Jefferson bringing much to this team.
4) Don’t know enough to comment.
5) Don’t really know either.

Thank you Brian McCann you’re wisdom is impeccable. The Jazz are not and never will be better without Boozer. Re sign Boozer and Millsap let Memo walk. Or move AK for a 2nd round pick this offseason. (Then we have an even bigger problem at the 3) I would love to see Memo in a Spurs Uniform. Until we play them anyway. I see the Jazz just sitting back and seeing how things turn out.

Interesting possibilities.
How about Amare Stoudemire, who is disgruntled with Shaq taking all the low post touches, and not having the offense revolve around him, for Booz and Almond Joy? The numbers work. Both players can opt out and the Suns have an open roster spot for Almond.
Why it works for the Suns. Stoudemire can also opt out. the Sun appears to be setting in Phoenix. Amare may not want to return to Phoenix, especially if Shaq reups, as he has hinted. It might be a similar situation to Maid Marion. They might have a better chance to resign Booz, because he plays more high post, which works with Shaq. On the surface, Booz has the better numbers on offense.
Why it works for the Jazz. Stoudemire is more athletic, plays much better defense and plays low post much better than Booz. It gives the Jazz an open roster spot. Amare is a great shot blocking presence and the Jazz system is designed especially for a low post power forward. Booz is more a high post PF.
Why we probably won’t see it. Fear! Tough to pull the trigger on such a high profile trade, especially with a Western Conference rival. It could cost a job, if it doesn’t work out.

Why is EVERYONE wanting to trade boozer?! I don’t understand the thinking you have right now wanting to trade away a man that averages 20 and 10. I love how Paul Millsap plays and what he has done with boozer out, but the jazz right now are a 9 seed without carlos and when we do have carlos we are a 4 seed. That is the main reason we need to keep him. And definetly not do that vince carter trade. He’s way overrated and shoots too much, he kills teams because he depends on getting the rock and shooting 20 times a game. Jerry would not be acceptable to that and where has vince ever won? The raptors went to the divisional playoffs once in his time there.

He’s averaging 18 and 11, but look at our record. I think we need a change.
Brian McCann on January 29, 2009 said:
Mitchy Mack- That’s what a lot of people said in the Stockton/Malone years right before they got to the finals. You don’t trade your best players for change sake, not when they haven’t even hit their prime yet. A lot of teams do that, and it hardly ever works out. You tweek the surroundings and show patience. You especially don’t trade them in the middle of a season that is a nightnmare with injuries like this one has been. If the Jazz are healthy all year, I guarantee they have the second or third best record in the west. Do you think it would be a good idea to trade Memo under those conditions? There is a reason for the bad record, and its not Memo.

Trade boozer for al jefferson. He will want to get out on minnesota cause that team sucks and has no chance of winning a championship. Plus Jefferson and boozer’s contracts end this year. Okur has been puttin up good numbers and if we get Jefferson we wont have to worry bout the defense. It would be a mistake to trade milsap because he is a work horse and fits into Sloans system really good. C.J. Miles has come along and i think he will develop into a good player
Mitchy Mack on January 29, 2009 said:
McCann, I said trade him at the end of the year, not in the middle. Pay attention
Mitchy Mack on January 29, 2009 said:
Oh, and Memo is no Karl Malone. Plus he is almost 30. I am not saying he is a bad player, but I just don’t see him getting a whole lot better. I love his game, but I just don’t see him leading us to the finals like Malone did.

you have to remember that the Jazz have a full roster this year. We don’t have the room for any trades that involve taking back more players then we send, unless we waive a player. That being said the Stoudemire trade would be awesome. If not then big Al Jefferson, Maid Marrion, Hedo Turkoglu or Gerald Wallace would all be great in my opinion. The most important part of this trade is to get somebody who is competitive and plays with emotion. Paul and Matt give max effort on every play, we need more Sloan type players who win or lose give everything they got. Dwill is competitive but lags on D and loose balls (possibly the worst three point defense on the team). Memo is slow and unwilling to play team D. I will give credit to Kosta because with limited playing time he always give great effort! Price to some degree also. Sloan’s system is designed for hustle and rebounding.

How about Miles to Free agency? Every time he has the ball he pops up for the three with a hand in his face. I know he has some serious potential but I just don’t see it! I say we should keep everyone on the team except Miles and just suffer another season, and wait for when Dwight howard, Kobe, Lebron, Amare, Dwayne Wade and another barrell full of all stars get out of their contracts in 2011 then we can decide if we keep Memo, Boozer, or AK

For some of you to remember. I was just wondering, at the beginning of the season, there was this article on NBA.com talking about how the Jazz’s offensive play was so great and how they do it, then ever since then, we haven’t played as well. (Personally i don’t think injuries were the total problem).

I thought this post had gotten lost and didn’t see it posted. Some great comments all around. There are a dozen trades that could have been done for Boozer, but obviously nothing happened. I keep asking myself, “Why wasn’t he traded?”. I think it ultimately boils down to two things. 1 – the injury scared teams off, and 2 – the economy is scaring everybody to death. I’m going to be writing my next blog about the economy. I hope it gets as much interest as this one!

I dont feel that most of those trades would be good for the Utah Jazz in the end. The only two that seem reasonable would be Boozer, Collins, and Almond for Marion, because Marion poccesses all of the qualities the Jazz lack right now. with experience, size, and shooting ability at the 3 spot. then Vince Carter becuase he is just an amazing speciman. But i do agree that we need to lose Boozer.
