Larry Miller, Gone at 64
Posted by admin on February 20, 2009

Larry H. Miller, husband, father, grandfather, a well-known entrepreneur, community advocate and humanitarian, died from complications due to type 2 diabetes today, at home, surrounded by his family. He was 64.
Miller, a man who truly loved Utah, its people and its land, was born in Salt Lake City in 1944. From modest beginnings, he grew up in the Capitol Hill area and went on to become one of Utah’s most successful entrepreneurs and business leaders.
Leaving behind a profound professional and personal legacy, the entities Miller created have had a significant and lasting impact on the communities in which he did business, and the more than 7,000 individuals he employed.
The Larry H. Miller Group of Companies began with the Larry H. Miller Toyota store in Murray, Utah on May 1, 1979. Through the years, Miller amassed more than 80 businesses and properties in the western United States. Most notable are the Utah Jazz, EnergySolutions Arena, the Salt Lake Bees, Miller Motorsports Park, Megaplex Theatres, and 39 automobile dealerships spanning the Rocky Mountain West. Miller also developed a vast real estate holdings including commercial and agricultural properties.
A dynamic entrepreneur and business leader, Miller also became known for his charitable efforts. Miller coined the phrase “Go about doing good until there is too much good in the world.”
Miller and his wife Gail provide close to 300 college scholarships each year. Larry H. Miller Charities, a foundation funded by monthly contributions from his businesses, fundraising events in the community, and personal donations from employees, has donated millions of dollars to communities in which Miller does business.
“Larry and Gail have always stressed the importance of giving back to the communities in which we do business. Our customers have supported us and it is important that we show our appreciation by helping those in need,” said Greg Miller, eldest son and CEO of the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies. “Larry felt that his legacy isn’t in business as much as it was in creating opportunities for good jobs and higher education.”
Larry and Gail have also donated millions of dollars to Utah-based colleges and universities for campus improvements such as the state-of-the-art softball and baseball complexes at BYU. The Larry H. Miller Campus of the Salt Lake Community College (SLCC), was completed in fall 2001 and includes the Larry H. Miller Entrepreneurship Training Center and The Larry and Gail Miller Public Safety Education & Training Center.
Despite all of his success, Miller always maintained that his greatest accomplishment is the family that survives him: his wife, Karen Gail Saxton Miller, their four sons and one daughter, 21 grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Sorry to hear about Larry’s passing. He has done so much for the state of Utah. He took a struggling Jazz franchise and built it up to what it is now. What Larry gave to utah was very unique in an owner. He showed he truly cared…sometimes to a fault. He was very passionate about his team. Jazz fans owe him a big thanks. It’s sad to see him go. Now, lets go win a championship for him. GO JAZZ.

His numerous contributions to his community and to the team he loved will always be remembered.
I was lucky enough to meet him at a Jazz event in 2000 and he was gracious, warm and kind.
Thanks for the many years of memories of games with you courtside, Mr. Miller.
God bless you and keep you and thank you for making the world a better place while you were here.

Larry has had a profound impact on not only Utah but on the individuals who live here. Personally, it was because of things he did, like keeping the Jazz here, that kept me going during difficult times. My love of basketball is indirectly related to the work he did. I also worked at Larry H. Miller Toyota, his first dealership.
Though I never knew him on a personal level, I am greatly saddened by this loss and hope that his children will keep his legacy alive and run his businesses the way he would have wanted. Larry is truly an inspiration for everyone. He built his businesses out of hard work. He was not given anything that he has, he had to work hard for it.
The thing that comes to mind whenever I think about Larry is that anything is possible, all dreams can become reality and if you are determined then nothing can stop you.
We will all miss you greatly Larry and the amazing impact you had on us all. There will certainly be a void left in Utah without you. All our affection and sympathies to your family and loved ones. Thank you for creating a legacy that will continue.

Larry will be missed. I grew up watching the Jazz and I have always admired the way that Larry has run the franchise. Jerry Sloan’s tenure is just one of signs of how loyal and dedicated of a person he was. We all can learn from his example and I hope that the Jazz organization honors his memory in a substantial way on behalf of those of us he has touched.

I am a Bulls fan. My team Chicago Bulls crushed Jazz’s hearts in June of 1997 and June 1998 in route of 2nd 3-peat title. From Chicago, I hope that his family would be proud to know that Mr. Miller has made Jazz a champion for many years to the state of Utah even bringing his team to 2 NBA Finals against my team Bulls back in 1997 and 1998. They were good teams and today they are good team trying to make playoffs better than the current Bulls team they lost a decade ago in late 1990’s.

We are so sad to lose Larry Miller. Our condolences to his family and the Jazz, too. We would have missed a lot without him. I just listened to the news conference and wanted to share this quote with his family and all of us. It is from a note sent to Eleanor Roosevelt after the death of her husband, Franklin. “They are not dead who live in lives they leave behind. In those whom they have blessed they live a life again.” It brought her “constant comfort” – I hope it will for you, as well. We have enjoyed Jazz games since they came to Utah. Thanks, Larry!!

As a Laker fan, I may not have liked the Jazz, but I always respected Larry Miller. He walked the walk. Nothing underscores this fact better than the way he treated Derek Fisher in his time of need. Another owner (heck, even Jerry Buss!) might have tried to at least get SOMETHING in exchange for him, but Mr. Miller understood that family comes before basketball–and let Derek out of his contract with no strings attached. A true class act. The NBA is better because of his influence. And poorer with his passing. Godspeed, Larry. You will be missed, even in Lakerland. And my sympathies go out to his family and friends.

Oh and one more thing…THANK YOU AND GOOD JOB FOR BEATING BOSTON!!!

It was Larry Miller’s stable ownership of the franchise that allowed it to stay in Salt Lake City. I’ll remember him as an owner who was passionate about his team. I’ll always take the one who cared too much over the one who cared too little. There are fans in sports who can only HOPE to have an owner as good as you. We’ll miss you forever Mr. Miller.

I can remember being so worried many years ago when it seemed like a done deal that the Jazz were going to Minnesota (The Minnesota Jazz sounds even a little stranger that the Utah Jazz). But a hero rode in on his white Charger, or whatever car he was driving at the time and saved us. I am so sorry to see you leave us Larry, even for a much better place. From Billy Paultz taking one on ther chin from Hakeem Olajawon to the three point shot by John Stockton heard around the world (at least my world) to D-Will and boys beating both the Lakers and the Celtics in about a week’s time, I have been mesmerized by Jazz basketball. You have provided countless hours of joy and excitement by your commitment to quality players and coaches. My thoughts and prayers go out to Gail and the whole Miller Family for the sacrifices they also made to make Utah a much better place to live. To quote another Jazz legend “You gotta love him, baby”.

Echoing what others have said, a very great person who loved basketball and cared about the game, but beyond that, cared more about the people who played it. I agree with what someone else said, that the NBA is poorer without him. The move to release Fisher hurt the Jazz, but it was the right thing to do. Not something a lot of owners would have done. He also agreed to release Boozer from his contract when his kid was having health issues.
Anyways, a good man has passed, and my thoughts are with his family.

Even before I became a Jazz fan I had heard the phrase, “After all, you know this guy” I remember asking my dad why someone would use a sales-line like that if people didn’t know him. Well, I definitely know who he is now and I am truly sorry that he is gone. Wow, the way he treated the Jazz as an interest rather than just a profit was proof of what kind of person he was.
I know that saying this sounds cheesy, but if you’re in good standing up there Mr. Miller, which you probably are, could you maybe convince the Big Guy that the Jazz deserve the big one this year? And wow, I’m glad they got to beat the damn Lakers and also Boston for you.

I had the honor of living and working in SLC for about 10 years. I was there when there was a question about the Jazz staying in Utah. Larry stepped up and saved the day for all of Utah. I grew up loving basketball and when I moved to Utah, I was told that I would cease being a Pacers fan and become a Jazz fan. Well they were right. And why???? Larry H. Miller and his love for his team, community and family.
I moved back to Indiana for a brief period of time and worked for the state. It just happened to be the the time when there was a choice between Utah playing the Bulls or the Pacers in the Finals. We know that it turned out to be the Bull. My office staff threated to plaster Pacer memoribilia all over my walls, since I was the lone Jazz fan. When it came to the game being the Jazz and the Bulls you never saw so many Pacer fans change to Jazz fans. Again it was because of Larry.
His loyality to his team influenced many and I was only one of them. Thanks Larry. The Miller family remain in my prayers but you can bet Larry is at every Jazz game… His spirit lives on.

We’ve lost a great man. It was wonderful to see Larry’s passion and love for the game of basketball, and in that respect he was unique because he didn’t look at the Jazz as simply a business. From a lifetime Jazz fan here Down Under, a prayer goes out to Larry’s wife and family. I feel horrible over the passing of the boss LHM. I was one of the of the benidict arnold utahns that was a bulls fan instead of rooting for my home town Jazz! And we all know what happened there. Shortly after the 98 series I came to see the error of my ways, and have been a very outspoken Jazz fan. I have had the same season tickets for 11 yrs now sec 6 row 5 seat 1, 2. I have never let go that I supported the enemy and I never got the chance to apologize to the greatest Utahn to have ever lived and now I never will. I will never forget him and what he did and what his name and like will continue to do for the state that I love so much. Larry Thank You for everything!! GO JAZZ GO!

Lives have truly been changed by the actions he has made through out his lifetime. He will never be forgotten. May the Jazz live on in his memory! Larry you will never be forgotten!!!!

As is everyone at this time I too am saddened by the loss of Larry H Miller. It is true he did a lot for th community and gave alot of his time to doing good, not just running all of his car dealerships. Granted some of you disagreed with him sometimes and the decisions he made regarding the team, but the fact of the matter is he has kept the team here even through thick and thin and that is an inspiration to the Jazz organization. He is the kind of man they should make a movie about because he brought out the best in others and will be missed. The organization is in great hands with his son Greg, who also seems like a pretty good guy,so lets get behind him because that is what Larry would ahve wanted. And go Jazz, you rock!!!!

Miller Family,
Thank you for sharing your husband, father and grandfather with us. In the conclusion of the video tribute before the New Orleans game, Larry said in the film, “I hope that when a grandson asks his grandfather who Larry H. Miller was, he could say a man who loved Utah”. My 5 yr old son asked me who Larry H. Miller was at the Atlanta game, and I told him that he loved the people of Utah and SLC so much that he built this stadium and created many wonderful parts of our community. The Energy Solutions Arena, the Utah Jazz, the car we drive, the movie theater we go to, the Jumbotron at Rice-Eccles stadium, the baseball stadium in Orem and many other things we enjoy.
We know that you sacrificed a great amount of love and time away from Larry, and we are mindful of that and appreciate your sacrifices from the bottom of our hearts. We love you, we love him, and we know that he loved Utah.
thank you!

I fall seriously short of the accomplishments Larry made but will try harder to DO better and BE better because of his life and example. He was, and is, one of the GREAT ones.

I grew up watching “Stockton to Malone” as a kid. I had a huge crush on John Stockton and Jeff Hornacek. I thought Karl Malone was amazing. I attended many games including some playoff games. I lost my voice at almost everyone. I’m so grateful for Larry’s commitment to the team and to Utah. The Jazz needed Utah and we needed them. A huge part of growing up for me revolved around them. As I’ve grown up I’ve appreciated Larry’s commitment to people and communities even more. He’s always stuck by anything he does unlike so many business men today. He always called it like it was weather in sports, business, politics etc.
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful man with us. I haven’t lived in the Rocky Mountain Area for several years now but I’m still a die hard Jazz fan no matter how good or bad they are-maybe I learned that from Larry.
