Of Control And Destiny
Posted by J R Stewart on March 03, 2009

Finally, after a spectacular February, the Jazz now control their own destiny.
They are up 2 loses on Phoenix and 1 loss on Dallas. They can win and win, but unless the Jazz lose, the Jazz control the 7th seed.
They now control what happens in the 6th, 5th, 4th and 3rd positions. Until now they were dependent on other teams to help them gain ground, but not now.
Portland has one less loss, but the Jazz play them twice. If the Jazz can win both of those games, they will be one loss up on them and control the tie-breaker.
New Orleans is also one loss ahead of the Jazz, with one head to head left. If the Jazz win, they will have the same number of losses, but the Jazz will have the tie-breaker.
Houston sits virtually tied for the 4-5-6 position with the Blazers and Hornets. If the Jazz can win their final 2 Rockets games, they will be one loss up and own the tie-breaker.
Denver sits in 3rd 2 losses ahead of the Jazz. If the Jazz win both of their remaining Denver meetings, they tie, but the Jazz would own the tie-breaker over the Nuggets.
They can not trip along the way, and they will probably need tie-breakers, but they finally are in control where they position themselves for a playoff seed.
They can be 3rd or out of the playoffs and it’s entirely within their control.
They have played team after team on end of a back end of a back-to-back, with a major player out. But, a win is a win! Houston and Denver also will come in after back-to-backs with injuries. The Jazz need to take advantage.
With an extremely difficult schedule of playoff teams, road games and their own back-to-backs, it’s going to be difficult, if not impossible, to achieve, but at least the ball is in their court.
The Jazz control their own destiny.

Sorry about the “loses”, should have been losses.
The Jazz has exceeded my expectations in the last month, after falling below, despite injuries, after the first 10 games.
Now I’m just along for the ride, hope they continue on “a terror” and the Spurs slump.
They’ve had a lot of good luck. So what! I love it.

Denver lost tonight. That puts them in the group of 3, 4, 5 and 6, all with 22 losses and the #7 Jazz sitting back one, at 23 losses.
It’s hard to emphasize the importance of the head-to-head games and tie-breakers.
They just might have to win those 15 in a row!

JR heres to our boys , I beleive that they can pull this off . It might be tough , but I think that they may just be begining to beleive in themselves . They have had some very good games against some top teams , so they have shown that they can do it .
I think that it is ironic that we have had the season we have had and we are still in the mix for a playoff spot . Wouldnt it be funny if we did win it all , after all they have been through ? I would have to say that LHM was smiling on us . What do you think ?
Go Jazz !!!!! We beleive .!!!!!

Tomorrow vs. Houston and Friday vs. Denver will determine everything. I Think the jazz will win both games but they will be tough. I do not like Ron Artest or the rockets in any way so this will be pay back for the earlier losses this season. A Couple of the 3,4,5,6 teams will be going head-to-head in the next week so the 22 loss will quickly be erased and added on to. I just hope the Utah Jazz can stay at 23 losses for at least another week but i believe in the Jazz strongly so i know they will keep rising in the standings! I never want to jinx it but i believe in the Jazz!! they will do better rather then worse in these final months of the season.
Go Jazz!!

I am going to predict that the jazz will finish 52-30 This season. What ever seed that gives them i think they might end up with that record

I’m telling you J.R. when you write what the Jazz needs it happens. Denver lost again. SaWeet! Now we just need San Antonio to choke and we’ve got that two spot. Houston comes in to tonights game on a back to back so we should own this battle and then we have Denver on Friday. We need both those wins. I’m thinking we should finish the season on a 30 game win streak, enter the playoffs and add 16 more wins to that streak and then PARTY! I’ve always had Jazz fever but its out of control right now with the way the Jazz are positioned and other teams are playing.

I discovered an error ;-(
I thought the Jazz had split with Houston, but the Rockets won both games. The Jazz has 2 Rockets games, at home, left. They need to win both to deny the Rockets the tie-breaker. However, the Jazz would have the better conference record, so they would gain the better seed, in the event of a tie.
Win tonight and on the 24th, then just match them in losses for the rest of the games.
That is going to be tough, because the Rockets are playing well, but it’s all in the Jazz’ hands.

Don’t get to excited yet. I believe by the end of the week the Jazz will have the 3 seed or close to it. But they have 6 home games and 14 road games left after they finish with Denver on Friday. Considering they have won 39% of their road games so far this year, that doesn’t bid well for them. So don’t get to excited just yet.

Wow!!!! Wow!!!! I just finished watching the Jazz beat the beat the Rockets. We have been gone for another family funeral for 2 days (too many of those lately) and came home tiredly anxious to watch the game. By half we had forgotten to be tired and going nuts. What a great game and what great plays. We will be at the game Friday and are already riding so high on emotion that I doubt we will realize much sleep between now and then…..Thanks JR for the lesson on positions. It changes every night so keep us informed because figuring it out is above me. WOW!! GO JAZZ!!

To me the Jazz ROAD record doesn’t even matter because we are better than it states. all of those games were played without being 100% so now is the real start. So far we are 2-0 on the road with our full team beating Minnesota and Golden state. If we can end the season loosing 5-7 more games we will be in perfect shape.
J R Stewart on March 06, 2009 said:
You’re right the ROAD record doesn’t matter, as long as they WIN on the road! The road record just records past experience and may, hopefully, mean nothing in the upcoming road trip. They are playing better now. Let’s hope that translates to road wins. Also, take a look at the April schedule. It’s not just the road games.

After a poor 1st quarter and a half, the Jazz finally started to play with some enthusiasm. 10 in a row is GREAT! Better than anyone predicted. Now, to complete the transformation of all unbelievers to believers, they MUST WIN ON THE ROAD!!!
This will be the real test.
GO JAZZ!

Well said J.R. I know I agreed with you when you posted last about the Jazz not controlling their own fate and we would need other teams to lose. Well….saddle up because those teams have lost and now we have every chance to own the three seed and possibly too if San Antonio keeps choking (unlikely but hey a guy can dream). I’m hopin that your posts have some voodoo like effect and when J.R. writes…it happens. So here is to more loses from those teams slightly in front or behind us and more winss for the Jazz.
