“ It was the best of times, it was the worst of times… ”
—Opening line of A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens

Orlando.

After a drive through the Everglades, along ‘alligator alley’, to Orlando, we were ready for the Jazz-Magic game… the tail end of a back-to-back.

I found a pair of “lower bowl” tickets on eBay and called the seller (a broker who lives in Indiana) just before the game. I offered him $50 for a last minute sale and he called ahead to leave them in will call.

The drive into downtown Orlando ended up in a similar rolling parking lot before our exit.

I stopped in front of the arena to let MrsJazz off and within 50 feet had a $10 parking spot. I just about beat her to the will call window.

We went only about 20 paces to the ticket entrance and were only a short distance to the section where our seats were. The upper and lower bowl entrances are off the same level.

Wait a minute! These are NOT 6 rows back from the floor!! These are 6 rows from the rail in the UPPER bowl. A quick call to Indiana and the price was reduced to $40 for the pair. With no way to give them back and shop the scalpers just outside the door, I agreed.

The arena is smaller than Miami or ESA and the seats were better than either of their comparable seats. The Magic will have a new, larger arena next year.

The Magic fans are more easy going than Heat fans. I gave a door giveaway, a Magic dancer’s poster, to the guy next to me and now have a life long friend. There were fewer fans in Magic gear, yet the place was packed.

Being another ‘backender’ blowout, there wasn’t much for Magic fans to get excited about. There was nothing for Jazz fans to cheer about. No “Jazz suck” shouts at the end of the game. Not much emotion.

The crowd was mostly Latino-black in Miami and white in Orlando, despite sizable communities in both cities.

Both mascots were pitiful. They wander around the court at the first of each half and that’s it. Bear is sooooo far superior. There was no joking with the fans and refs, silly string, big balloons exploding with confetti, bike or toboggan rides down the steps, mini-ball slingshots, motorcycle intros, giant basketball slingshots, parachute drops or tee shirt cannons.

There was no special entertainment at halftime.

The dancers were OK, but the Jazz dancers are a little better.

The announcements at the Miami game were mostly unintelligible. They showed a weird web cam of the announcer, on the JumboTron, peering up through his eyebrows.

Miami’s “cheerleaders” are a guy, acting like a disco jockey, with two Hooters girls dancing beside him. They are off court and only seen on the JumboTron.

Most of the Heat “cheers” (boos or screams) were generated by JumboTron animations during free throws.

Overall, the Heat game was the most fun, even if I couldn’t understand the announcements (it wasn’t Spanish, I can understand that). The Magic arena was the most user friendly. The traffic flow, parking, arena access and seating locations were much better, but will be gone next year.

So…The trip “was the best of times”, but the games and Jazz performances were “the worst of times.”

Portland

We are up in Portland right now and MrsJazz was pushing to go to the Blazers game, but I was worn out and we decided to watch it on TV. I’m sure glad we didn’t go down and pop for the scalpers tickets and the humiliation. This game was bad enough to watch it on TV.

This was the worst of the worst of times. This was much poorer effort than the Orlando game. The only positive I could see was the fact we didn’t have to suffer through this game in person.

That blazer game was terrible! There were bad calls, even worse turnovers, and Sloan gets ejected along with boozer. I hope we crush denver tomorrow.

Yeah…not a game I would have EVER wished to be at. Pathetic, just pathetic.

I hate to say this but I think that it has to be said. CJ has been sucking it up on both ends of the floor for quite some time now. His confidence is down, he’s never been a rebounder and his defense is soft. He is way too streaky. Whereas sometimes he’s hot, most of the time he’s as cold as the other side of the pillow. In Alaska. In the wintertime. Starting him just doesn’t make sense anymore. At the beginning of games, when lately the Jazz seem to enjoy digging themselves a sometime insermountable hole, he has been little more than dead weight out on the floor. Korver has been on fire lately, playing solid defense, blocking shots and REBOUNDING!!!! Not only does he have way more hustle and energy on the floor than CJ, but he’s a better shooter as well. He has a great chemistry with D-Will and the two games that he has started he blew up for big games averaging 15.5 points, 1.5 steals, 8 rebounds .667% from the arc and .688% from the floor. I have three words for coach Sloan:

START KYLE KORVER

Bench C.J.

He is hurting the team.

Chris……The problem is, if you do that, you take away your bench that needs to come in and give that special spark and talent. It really is sort of a trade off.

J.R. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. The blog was interesting, funny, and full of good points. The only problem is that it makes some of us jealous that you were in warm weather. I am sooooo nervous about tonight’s game that I can’t seem to get anything done around here. ( good an excuse as others) There just isn’t any middle ground for the Jazz any more. They either stink up the place or play like a championship team. What will it be tonight?

I totally agree with you Chris E. I’m glad you had a good time on your trip J. R. it would be so fun to see the Jazz play in a different venue but I’m sure we will all agree that there is nothing quite like watching the boys at the good ol’ ESA : ) lol

jazz suck
i am so angry with them i swear. They do not know how big the denver game was and they come out as if they were all blind. literaly blind. If they gave a decent effort they would be winning this game by atleast 4 points because nuggets werent golden either yet they still win easily. Wow jazz you suck. as much as i hate saying it i am frustrated and its true. I think even thunder won 2 games on the road vs a winning team. Sad. i am tired of always saying jazz are good they can do it. well now its time for them to prove it !

I reluctantly tell you i’m a jazz fan. the way they play on the road is a sorrrrrrrrry cop-out, they i mean we the fans don’t pay them to play their hearts out when they feel like it!!!!!!!!!!!! I had a brilliant thought, why don’t the jazz play all of next seasons games on the road as a prescription to get their act together , then they just might just maybe get so sick of losing on the road, they would attain a “KILLER ATTITUDE” [ STOP RELYING ON THE FANS -US-to cheer them on!!!!!!!!!! AM I HITTING THE NAIL ON THE HEAD OR WHAT??????? ANYBODY AGREE ?????? MAKE THIS HEARD PLEASE I AM TIRED OF THE JAZZ THINKING THEY’RE SOMEBODY WHEN THE ROAD RECORD SAYS DIFFERENT!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, maybe CJ read my comment and went out with a chip on his shoulder. Last night he dropped 19. So he just made me look bad. And I’m glad for him to do it anytime. Linda I appreciate the comment, but here’s the thing about the bench. How many guys do we have that can fill in that gap? We could easily have CJ off the bench and start AK or KK. You put KK in at the 2 spot, brewer down in the 3 because with his recently added size and strength, we know that Brewer can play the 3 and then have AK come in for KK or Brewer. If he subs for Brewer he will play the 3 and if he subs for KK, Brewer can slide to the 2 and AK plays the 3. Then, when needed we can put CJ in to sub for either position because he can play at either spot as well. The point is that there is a reason to put your best players on the floor to start the game because the only more important part of the game than the beginning is the end. CJ can provide a lift on the floor off the bench with limited minutes if he’s playing well. If not, pull him out and sub any of the other three. That’s the versatility that this team has as far as rotating and changing players out from the 2 and the 3. I think it’s the timing more than anything. Who plays better as a starter and who plays better off the bench? I think that sometimes, KK rushes and forces his shot because with his limited minutes he wants to make an impact. Starting, however, he may loosen up knowing that he will be getting the time to make smart decisions and work himself into the flow of the game. So, that’s my two. Thanks.

I just got back in town and WHAT’S ALL THIS WHITE CRAP! Burrrrr!!!

I didn’t expect a win in Portland, Orlando or Miami, but Miami was the one that got away!

I watched Denver last night, a backender toilet flush, but at least they had an early lead and a chance to win.

Don’t give up!

GO JAZZ!

Have been a loyal Jazz fan for almost 20 years and have never been so frustrated! I am happy that the organization continues to put together winning seasons but lets face it…..Utah will never win an NBA championship. Not because the league is “against them”, but because they dont put the money in the right places. Coupled with the fact that no superstar will ever want to come to the state. It is a shame because John, Karl and Deron deserve some rings.

Boozer must go! Kiri must go……..and please bring in a strong, defensive presence to clog up the middle. No defense on this squad

Linda McFarland on April 03, 2009 said:

Chris….It all makes a little sense except that look how many times we have started with a big lead and pooped it away? Then that is when we need some really good ones to come in with a spark to keep it going????? They are hard to figure out.! I wonder too if there aren’t some (can’t ever spell it) psychological problems between some of the players??? Who knows?????

J R Stewart on April 08, 2009 said:

The problem with AK and Carlos is the size of their contracts! They’re just overpaid for what they can do. It kills the Jazz’ ability to sign free agents and their own players they want to keep.
