Anderson to Utah?
Posted by Johnathan Kendrick on May 15, 2009

I have heard quite a few people including media talk about the Jazz offering Chris “The Birdman” Anderson a contract to play for the Jazz next year. Among the reasons I hear mentioned are “Missing piece” – “Defensive energy” – “Perfect fit.” Best of all, speculation continues he could be had for the Mid-Level-Exception.
Personally I want to go on record early saying Chris Anderson in Utah is a terrible idea.
I don’t know that giving 5 million dollars a year to a guy that averages 6 points and 6 rebounds a game in 20 minutes of backup time is ever a good idea, but on a team that is over the salary cap and will probably be over the luxury cap – it’s a very bad idea. Even if that guy averages 2.5 blocks a game – that’s not a good contract. On a side note – there is a very good probability the Jazz won’t be using the MLE at all this year, but that’s a different story.
Not that the money argument should even come into play. Jerry Sloan is still going to be the coach next year and the way it looks he might be coaching the Jazz for at least another decade. This is where I see the biggest road block in the plan. Maybe it’s that Anderson dropped out of the University of Houston. Maybe it’s the fact that after enrolling at Blinn College he played only one season for the Bucs then declared for the NBA draft without good prospect of even being a second round pick. Maybe it’s because he was suspended for two years by the NBA after testing positive for what the NBA defined as “drugs of abuse.” Maybe it’s because his best numbers have come while playing on a team that runs a fast pace, low structure system. I don’t think Chris Anderson is a “Jerry Sloan guy” and I can’t see this guy working with Jerry Sloan or fitting in to a Jerry Sloan System. Period.
Don’t get me wrong. Chris Anderson has accomplished a lot of incredible things. He worked his way from the Chinese League to the NBA. He has either kicked a drug habit or found a way to mask hard drugs from the NBA tests – either one would take quite the commitment. All of that is admirable and I give Chris his due – but in a Jerry Sloan system – the birdman just wouldn’t fly.

First off, I agree Anderson wouldn’t work well with the Sloan system. That being said, there are much more to a player like Anderson than scoring points. He is a defensive minded player, and can bring someone who can bang down low into the picture. Take him vs how we used Collins this last series against LA. It’s not hard to see looking at a player of this type, a solid defensive block presence. Before I get critisized for saying this, I know it’s impossible. For what it’s worth a player like Dwight Howerd, attitude, post presence, and defence is what we really need. Bosh may do as well if we could make something like that happen.
Ames on May 15, 2009 said:
Again – we need Bosh and Maggette … lose Booz, AK, and Collins, and Knight … I’m not a HUGE CJ Miles fan, but understand the guy is still pretty young, but it wouldn’t break my heart to see him leave; likewise with Korver, who is way too streaky; he’s a nice guy, but we need good players, not just good attitudes. Love Brewer. Love Williams. Love Okur. Love Millsap. Hate Birdman. Not a good fit. AT ALL. It’s all about Bosh and Maggette.
J R Stewart on May 15, 2009 said:
Yet, the Jazz could use a high energy ‘Big Dog’, ‘Birdman’ or ‘Sideshow Bob’ coming off the bench with enthusiasm, who can rebound, block shots and cause havoc.
If Booz, Memo and KK opt out, that’s almost $27 million coming off the books, if the Jazz renounce their Bird Rights. They would be way under the cap and a major player in the free agent market.
So, June 30th at 10 pm will be interesting indeed.

The Jazz can’t just say “we could never get those guys”, rather theey should be on the phone seriously committed to trying to get something done.

how is this not a good idea?!! DEFENSE! it is what the jazz needs! and jerry can provide structure to him that he needs. to the idiot who think toronto will trade bosh get a new sport, and for the “blogger” think about jazzs defense right now and tell me we arent desperate for someone like him.
Johnathan Kendrick on May 15, 2009 said:
JR- True, it would be 27 million off the books – but they would not be able to spend all of that. The salary cap is based off revenue and with revenue down the cap is estimated to be around 55 million. Meaning if the Jazz let all three of those players walk, they would have over 45 million going to 8 players still on the books (counting the draft pick and $1.25 Mil rookie contract). Leaving the Jazz with less than 10 million to spend and 5 roster spots to fill. Once the Jazz had spent the 10 million they would have to fill the remaining spots with players willing to sign for the league (veteran) minimum.
Brian McCann on May 15, 2009 said:
Brian- Your absolutely right, Toronto should just let Bosh walk at the end of his contract and get absolutely nothing in return. That is a much smarter business decision. That way they can push their chances of building a contender even further back, because there is no way Bosh will sign a max contract for a losing team…he wants to win too bad.
Swinging terms like “idiot” around here wont gain you much credit.

Not that I would want Birdman in a Jazz uni anyway, but I don’t see Denver even interested in the idea of letting him go to a conference and division rival, especially when they can see the impact he has with them right now.
Of course, as mentioned, we’d see his production decline in the strict system Sloan has. I couldn’t imagine he’d have as much freedom to roam as he does in Denver.
Clark on May 15, 2009 said:
We should have cleared a roster spot last season and offered Andersen $1-2, from the money we saved by trading Brevin Knight. Had we done that, we would be division champs and still participating in the playoffs. But hindsight is 20/20.
Andersen would be a nice pickup for the Jazz. I can’t even begin to tell you how much we need a player like that. All he wants to do is rebound and alter/block shots, without calling for offensive touches. If the Jazz lose either of Boozer or Memo and can clear cap space by dumping Harpring, Korver, or Miles, then they will have room to sign Andersen to the MLE without hitting the tax.. Even if we go under the cap by losing Boozer and Okur, we would still have the MLE to surpass the salary cap without paying the tax and would greatly need another big man. I would love to see Andersen and Koufos splitting time at the center next season.
You guys can make all the assumptions you want about how Andersen is “a bad guy” on the surface and such, but I think Sloan would love the guy. How could he not? He plays with energy and he plays hard and changes games. And there have never been on court issues with him.
Johnathan Kendrick on May 15, 2009 said:
Anderson was abusing drugs – that’s not a good thing. That’s not my point though. I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on that one and say he is reformed but looking at his history I wouldn’t be willing to wager a MLE on him and Sloan getting along. He is an independent guy. Guys that like to do it their own way (Giricek, Arroyo, Almond, Chris Morris) don’t usually find a spot in the rotation under Sloan.
The Jazz defensive scheme and the Nuggets defensive scheme are different. Anderson thrives in Denver. Having to learn to play in the Jazz ‘Help Defense’ system – I don’t think he would be as great a fit as other people think he would be.
Betty on May 15, 2009 said:
I’m not the biggest Birdman fan but I have to say, I would love to have him donning a Jazz uniform. The guy is intense and he plays better defense than any guy we currently have (in my opinion). Anywho, I just hope that the Jazz are taking some notes from the Rockets series.
J R Stewart on May 15, 2009 said:
The Jazz would also have the midlevel exemption, but I don’t think there’s anyway they go under the cap. The 76ers got under the cap far enough to sign Elton Brand by revoking Bird Rights of several players, but I think the Jazz will think more along the lines of an extension for Memo and possibly KK.
Also, you make your big signing first, while you have the maximum available to spend under the cap, then fill in with mid-level, biannual and veteran minimum, up to the luxury tax.

Birdman would be a good interior defense. How ever no way the nuggets would let him go, specially to a division rival.
Johnathan Kendrick on May 15, 2009 said:
A couple points of clarification -
1. According to the CBA the MLE is only “available to any team that exceeds the salary cap at the beginning of the offseason.” So in the Memo, Booz, Korver opt out scenario – If the Jazz renounced those players “Bird Rights” – They would be 10 million under the salary cap and therefore not qualify for, or be able to use the exception this year.
2. Chris Anderson will be an un-restricted free agent at the end of the season. He can sign any contract for any team he chooses. Denver will not have the chance to match.

I might catch some ire for saying this , but I think that Anderson reminds me of Dennis Rodman . I am not so sure that he would fit in a Sloan system . I think that is one of our biggest setbacks is there are few players in the NBA that could function in a Sloan system .
I think that KOC and Jazz management has a very diffecult summer ahead of them . I myself think that we need defense . But I would hate to lose most everybody on this sqaud . There is tons of young talent that could explode with the right desire to work hard for it this summer .
To me there is only one player that I would give up , and that is BK . I think that RP should back up D-Will . I think that KK can become more consistant with some confidence and hard work . I think that we need Okur to stretch the feild . I think that CJ is loaded with untouched talent , he is still young and learning . I think that Boozer staying healthy and with more desire to play can be that All Star player . I like Milsap and Harpring both , but I think that Matty may be getting ready to retire . I think that AK could be better next year if he can put on some muscle . I like Brewer too he is so ahtletic .
I like Collins and what he has done for us , being the player to take the fouls . But I wish that we would try and play Fes and Kosta more .
Well , that is my take on this , and it may not make me popular , but I can live with it .

JayD, I couldn’t agree with you more. I just don’t think we have the means to keep everyone.
Dennis Rodman may be a name slightly overboard for who Birdman is right now, but you never can tell what would happen under stess. Might be a perfect fit given time.

Defensive big man is what we need and Andersen could provide that but we cant get him because
First-could he actually work with Sloan? Im not sure Jerry could manage the dude. If he could, he might fit, but that brings us to another problem we have to face:
His contract. Although hes a great defender and rebounder, his offensive contribution is rather little outside of put-back dunks and not worth 5 million.
If he showed he could work with Sloan and was signed for under 2 mil, I would go ahead and get him.

Just cause someone doesnt look like he should play in utah, doesnt mean he cant. Stop being so judge-mental.
mike on May 17, 2009 said:
Yah after I read some of the posts it seems like people are judging him by his tats not his game. Fyi Deron has tats too.
Guys the dude comes off the bench and gets 2.3 blocks a game. Dwight howard gets 3.65 playing 35+ mins. NBA RB per min states that anderson gets roughly 6.36 where as dwight gets about 4.84. So defensive wise hes better than dwight or marcus camby. He runs the floor well and rebounds not to mention the 2+ blocks a game while playing just 17 mins.
Hard work is what sloans system is about for 20+ years someone who comes in gives energy and im sure no coach in hell is going to say no to 6 pt 6 rebounds and 2.5 blocks comming off the bench. In fact its better than AK’s numbers. Ak plays 27+ mins a game averages 11 pts 2.8 rebounds 2.6 asist 1.1 blocks a game. breaking it down AK’S FG% is 44% Anderson 54.8 and is 70% during the playoffs.
With that being said we don;t really need anderson. We’ve got two rookies that are very productive in the post. They just need time to develop. If anything Id say bye collins and sign costa kuffos.
Dallan on May 17, 2009 said:
We dont need someone like lamar odom we have to many big man on our roster allready plus we are going to resign milsap. Where would he play? Plus if we get boozer back he wont ever get minutes. We do need a better shooting guard though and move ronnie to SF that would help us alot. So getting Maggette from Golden State would be awesome. Have Korver come off the bench with him We need to focus on that i believe and then he can move Brewer to SF and let miles come off the bench. We would be a very improved team with that line up. If we do lose boozer I believe we should move Okur to the PF and bring in one of our young guys. Then let milsap back up okur and fes and koufus play the center position. That would give us a one two punch at the PF, SF and SG position. Plus a pretty nice difference between the two centers because Koufus is a good outside shooter and has good range and Fes is more of a I am going to dunk this over you. I have not really seen him shoot far out so i dont know how his range is.. Thats my take on it.

I don’t dislike Anderson because of what he has done or what he looks like. I dislike him for the sneaky way he plays ball on the court. He acts to me like the worse he hurts a guy (and I mean easily, physically put them out of play) the happier he is. We need to be meaner but there is a decent way to be meaner and a cowardly way to be mean. In a couple games I have seen him do some dirty trick to someone and then snicker about it going up the floor. I admire a person who can come back from using drugs and he can do what he wants to his body as far as tats are concerned. I don’t think it gives off a good image but there aren’t many who don’t have them By the way Howard, aren’t you being rather judge mental of some of our bloggers because you don’t like what they say? .

I like your reasoning and the Birdman’s production, but it’ll never work. Denver will offer him more than the mid-level exemption, which will eliminate the Jazz and 90% of the other teams. That leaves only Detroit, OK and the Grizz, unless some unexpected opt outs occur, to compete for his services.
The Jazz did the same thing with Matt when they resigned him to his present contract (back when he was younger and still healthy).
Koufos is under contract, it’s Fes, who needs his $870,000 option picked up by the Jazz by June 15th. But, YES! Sign him and play them both next year.

If a player knows he can get away with somthing than hes going to take advantage of it. Jeff Hornacek said it himself he would grab someones jersey if he got beat on the corner, Malone said he would send someone to the ground rather than being posterized. If you lead youself to conclusions based on a snicker than I’m a tad bit worried for you. I’m guessing you didn’t like Howards post because hes judging you just like your judging someone else kinda ironic.
And AGAIN WE DONT NEED ANDERSON, DEVELOP OUR ROOKIES. FEZ and KUFOS plenty of size in the paint WHY WHY USE COLLINS.

The Jazz need to totally re-think what they are doing with the team. Get rid of Booz, KK, Fez, Collins, Almond, and Miles. We need to get some good free agents. Anderson is a good defensive player, but he wouldn’t fit in the Jazz system for sure. Get Ben Gordon from the Bulls and possibly McDyess from the Pistons. Draft a huge, skilled big man that can contribute on the defensive side. Start D-Will, Brewer, AK, Millsap, and Okur for now. If we do get a new C in the draft, You could move Okur to starting PF or on the bench. I love AK, but he is not as good as he used to be, so maybe move Brewer to SF and but Gordon or another free agent to SG.

3. We get Dwight Howard, Bosh, and Magette. Orlando gets A.K. and Nathan Jawai. The Warriors get Harpring and Jameer Nelson. Toronto gets Boozer, Ronnie Turiaf, and J.J. Redick
4. Boozer for Camby

The Jazz can always find some ‘fillins’ to feed them the ball.
Any trade needs to have a benefit to BOTH teams and fall within the CBA salary guidelines, or no deal. (OK, the Pau freeby aside)
If Boozer opts out and the Jazz “lose” him to another team, that would give them some flexibility at the trade deadline to make a deal, based on financial fear, from another team, which could turn into a spectacular trade.

wow I wish i have heard this I think that would be an amazing fit in utah depending on who’s stays around next season. If every one wants to get rid of AK except, he would be the next best thing. you pay him 5 million a year to do the same stuff on defence that AK did and just give up a little on offence, i like it. yeah he may only get 6 pionts and rebounds a game but he is a big intimidation factor he gets in peoples heads on defence. He shuts super starts on other teams down, after he blocks them a few times and steals the ball a few times it throws off there game completley. now a few things got to happen before you start dealin with that like finding out where boozer and memo and millsap and korver are all going. cause if they all go yeah get some other guys to help out with scoring cause there just went more then half of your scores in a game. But yeah get Anderson give him more palying time cause her did all that on 20 or 22 minutes a game, what do you think he could do with 25 30 minutes a game he would be crazy good.
Yeah there is alot of question if he would mesh well with jerry but it might be just what he needs a coach to keep him in line. a person that is on his case about alot of things he does. as far as the way he plays he is the perfect guy for a jerry system he hustles he is agresive and he gives it all every second he is out on the court. i would love to see the jazz get him that would so a smart move. how bout this let him sign back on with denver and trade ak for him and denis klezia. the guy kills us every game we played against denver that would be sweet..
