Bring Back the Music Note

I have been thinking a lot lately about what the Jazz need to do this off season to get back to where we all want them to be. Of course we need a reliable backup PG, improved interior defense, and a bigger frontline, but there is one other thing I think the Jazz need to do to improve the look of the players, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the players themselves. I think its time to bring back the music note uni’s, or at least a variation of them.

In the mid-90’s, when the Jazz announced they were going to change the uniforms and team colors, I was excited. Not surprisingly, the uniforms fit right in with the other bold, colorful designs that were infiltrating the league. The Rockets, Pistons, Sonics, and Nuggets were a few of the teams that changed their uniforms, just as the Jazz did, to adopt the fresh new look. After only a few years though, styles changed, and suddenly most of these teams had a look that was considered over-the-top and out of style.

A lot of the teams around the league (including the Jazz) decided to go for a much simpler look. The new uniforms of the early 2000’s were, in most cases, only two colors with the team name written boldly across the front. They took on kind of a college or high school feel in their simplicity. The Jazz also introduced an alternate road uniform that I for one have never really been a fan of. To me it still has that flashy 90’s feel to it, although it is toned down some.

I am not a fashion expert, and have never claimed to be, but the music note logo has made a comeback lately, and I think its time the Jazz use it on their uniforms. They could do a baby-blue version, or some other variation (maybe just the note itself without the rest of the lettering?). They could even add some pinstripes of some kind like New Orleans did this season.

The Music note logo was part of the look of the Jazz for a lot of years, and I think bringing it back would be a good marketing move. I have a “retro” Williams jersey myself, and every time I wear it, people want to know where I got it from. Its not that their current uniforms are bad, its just that it seems like everyone I talk to about this subject would like to see the old logo make a comeback, so why not do it? I guarantee the team would sell more merchandise, and it would also bring us back to our roots a little bit. What do you guys think?

The Jazz note is one of the more clever and identifiable logos.

Just because the Jazz are no longer in N O, they still have a musical name and it would be appropriate.

You can keep the Mardi Gras colors. I like the current colors much better.

I’m all for bringing back the note. But I do have one request…please no more light blue jerseys! They make our boys look whimpy. Is it just me?

Yes! I suggested the same thing in the forum topic posted in the comment above. Check out my mock-up logos.

Matthew- i love the logo’s! We are definitly on the same page here…I think most jazz fans would agree that it’s time that we go back to some version of our roots. Awesome logos…I really like the idea of the one that has just the music note “J” and the number down below on the opposite side. I hope Jazz management is reading this…

Thanks Brian. Do you mean you like the logo that’s mostly silver that excludes the purple all together? I’m a little confused about which one you said you liked.
Most people I show these to are a fan of the retro green one but personally, I think the Jazz should keep their current colors and just go with a retro logo. As you can see, I played with bending and warping the logo in the second picture but I still like the straight logo better.
If anyone has suggestions on how to submit the logos to Jazz management, let me know. I called the Jazz phone number listed on their website but they wouldn’t give me an email address.

Matthew- I like the idea of the one that just has the music note “J” on the upper-left hand side of the jersey with no other lettering and the number on the lower right side of the jersey. I agree with you that I dont think they should change their colors, and I like also like the straight logo.

I’m not sure how to get ahold of anyone in management. I kknow a lot of them read this blog. I’m hoping they read this post.

Brian- That jersey that you like isn’t actually mine. That’s an idea someone else came up with. I only created the Jazz note logos down below.

The note is KEY!

I have studied graphic design, and I make logos for companies. If you compare the Note to the Current Jazz logo, the Note has win written all over it.

Logos need to be brandable, and thats just how good the note was, it is still branded into all of our minds. Honestly, if you asked me to draw the Jazz logo, the note is what pops into my mind, not the weird retro mountain scene that the Jazz have been sporting, it breaks all the rules of beings easily brandable.

For one, the new logo is too complex, there are too many lines and too many jagged edges, it doesn’t really flow.

Second, there is no balance. The J on the logo is huge, and it blows the balance of the logo off. Notice when they wear the UTAH jerseys, there is a nice balance, and it looks better, that Jazz with the big J that tappers to the Z’s has fail written all over it.

Third, the generic mountain scene. Really? I know we LOVE the mountains here in Utah, but that is also the most generic mountain silohuette I have seen all over the planet.

The jazz note on the other hand had great flow. And it had like a nice form and had many meanings thrown in, it was a clever logo.

Just a few thoughts from someone who has studied the logo design process…

Bring back the note, simple is better.

the note is not cool, i love the logo we have right now.
Navy, light blue and purple go great together, i love the mountains in the back
and i love all our jerseys, i think they’re terrific! the new logo is not complex at all!

I think the note would be a great logo. I personaly think they should have kept it all along, it really stands out and shows some awsom creativity which would be great to see again, The sixers went back to there old logop and I think it’s time for the Jazz to do the same.
