Of Money and Jazz Destiny

This is Crazy! Nobody is controlling their own destiny. Neither the players or the teams.

The 3 “opt-outs” (KK just opted in) and the restricted free agent, have no control over what another team might or might not offer them, or lie about offering  them. The Jazz have no safe way to go until 10 PM Tuesday. They didn’t even know what needs to address with their draft picks.

It’s got to be tough for players. Do you listen to agent hype, about how under paid and under appreciated you are, because the more you get paid, the more the agent makes? Or, do you look at the possibility, that you may opt out and there will be no takers, or just bargain hunters out there? Do you turn down a lucrative offer from your own team, or wait too long, have the offer withdrawn, and have to eat humble pie with another team?

I can remember Jamie Watson and his agent, in 1997, touting about how good he was and how much money he deserved, only to have the Jazz turn their backs and watch him fade into oblivion.

In 2002, Donyell Marshall and his agent, if I remember correctly, turned down a Jazz offer starting at something like $7 million/year. His agent played ‘hard ball’, waiting for more. The salary cap adjusted down that year, and the Jazz revamped their offer to start at something like $6 million/year. Finally, the Jazz signed other players and withdrew the offer, leaving Donyell to take about a $2 million/year deal with Chicago.

Shandon Anderson’s agent thought he was worth much more than the Jazz were willing to pay, but ended up taking a minimal offer with Houston. Shandon was great in Sloan’s system, a perfect fit. He never could find the same success elsewhere, nor the same pay.

A lot of players have had inflated egos and pay scale expectations.

There may be several bargains kicking around in August.

Players and their agents, with their self interest, tend to get an inflated view of their value.

Teams have been willing co-conspirators in the salary inflation, afraid to lose a talent and keep players happy. The AK-47 situation comes to mind. Memphis, at the time, overpaid Pau, who just now, with the Lakers, is playing up to his max. salary.  That locked the Jazz into an overpriced extension, or have AK’s fragile ego deteriorate, if he didn’t get a max extension. They got both, anyway, a bloated contract and a fragile ego.

I hope the Jazz will be tough negotiators and not get locked into bad contracts. There will be fire sales waiting to happen in February.

There are always young players coming up, who have been overlooked, or in the wrong system. If the Jazz can take some of those salary savings and put them into player evaluations, they just might pick up some nice affordable replacements.

San Antonio does a nice job of finding free agents or low draft picks to fit in and play well. Of course, they have had 3 number one picks to build around. That helps.

We can always hope that the Knicks tank it badly this year and get lucky in the draft, so the Jazz could experience that #1 pick, just once.

Booz just announced he will NOT opt out.

Good decision for Boozer, bad for the Jazz salary structure.

Get ready for the Boozer trade rumors between now and Feb trade deadline.

So, JR you think that means….Bye bye Millsap.? :(

Wel Booze went out shoppin around and found out he can’t make more money is why he didn’t opt out. No one want’s to play an ijury proned power forward that kind of money that he was looking to make. As for Memo I think he is gone there has been a bunch of rumors going around saying he is wich is great in my eye. We can for one thing bring are guys that have been barried on the bench along. Also i liek are two forward set with Booze and, Milsap we ran that a few times last year and, I thought that was are most dangerous line up we had. I doubt Millsap will leave I think the jazz will match any offer a team throws up on the board for Pual they like him to much here. I just hope they don’t start him he is more likely to get injured if he plays over 25 minutes a game it scares me . As far as agents go it really comes down to the player he is the one that say yay or nay on a contract. I like how John Stockton handled himself he got drafted and went up to the jazz and, said ok you deal with me and, no one else period end of decusion. that’s how a basketball player should handle him self .

KK, Okur, and Boozer are all staying it appears, and we are planning on keeping Millsap. It seems impossible to avoid the luxury tax now…

JayD on June 30, 2009 said:

Yea , I dont know how we will avoid the luxary tax this year , with all 3 players staying . Unless the Jazz office makes some trades with them . I dont know how this will effect the rookies or second year players ?
Well , I still think that we have a great bunch of guys if they can learn to play hard and play together .. I am hoping that they have all worked hard over the summer and come in shape to play . Then maybe we can get some of that confidence that we lacked at the end of the season last year .
Lets go Jazz !!!!!

nah i say we let Milsap go we are sinkin to much money into this team if you keep him around.

J R Stewart on June 30, 2009 said:

With everyone not exercising their options, the Jazz are deep into the luxury tax, but they should have a very good team and looooots of trade options with expiring contracts and desired players.

Millsap is basically $2 for every $1, because all of his salary will be in the luxury tax area. I love him, but I can’t see how the Jazz can afford him. If OKC gives him a $7-$9 million offer sheet, which seems highly likely, I just can’t see the Jazz forking over $14-$18 million for Millsap. I would guess that they let him go and use AK as Boozer’s backup, when he’s not at SF. That would make better use of his $16.5 million salary, give him more time and help his productivity, while saving the Jazz a boatload of money.

Kevin should have his his phone burning his ear with all the offers he will hear in the next 8 months. The Jazz will have the most trade assets in the league. If they don’t start the season playing on a championship level…

LET’S MAKE A DEAL!!!

there is the problem, now, we don’t have a great team, we just have a great starting five….. with no money to buy a decent bench……. no bench, no champ

justonechampionship on July 01, 2009 said:

If somehow we can resign Milsap we are going to have an outstanding year because we have at least 4 players going in a contract year. So, that means no injuries for boozer, more shouts of “Money!” from bolerjack, and Korver and Milsap will both have good years. That’s a big IF though because like french dude said, “no bench, no championship.”

Jared on July 01, 2009 said:

Sorry, but it isn’t the bench that wins the championship. It wasn’t the Lakers bench that killed us, it was Gasol, Bryant, Bynum and Odom and Ariza. We should not be worried about the bench until we are happy with the starters. In my opinion we are in trouble with our starting 5. PG – D-Will is a stud, I love having him at point. SG – Brewer is a good defender and good are garbage/hustle ball, but he can’t create his own shot, and shoots the 3 at a very poor 25%. It is called SHOOTING guard for a reason, and we need a knock down shooter at the 2. So either Brewer needs to find a long range shot, or he should be our backup – Bruce Bowen type defensive option at the 2. SF – Miles is a selfish player who has loads of talent. I like his ability to knock down the 3 but his effort on defense is pathetic. If only AK could gut it up and fight for the spot we would be set, but instead he seems to be actually loosing weight and showing very little drive. PF – Boozer is a cancer on the team. When he got back and was healthy we totally tanked. Millsap is a good high energy 4, but he just isn’t someone you want to rely on when the opposition has an over sized 4. He can’t guard 7 footers and they can totally shut him down. C – Okur’s game is totally beneficial if we have a stud at 4 because it opens up the interior of the defense, where he can knock down 3’s or attack the rim if slow bigs come out on him. I like Okur’s offense a lot, but his defense is middle of the road at best. In the playoffs it is your starters who win you games, not your bench. You generally have more rest and starters play even more minutes. These are the positions we should be trying to upgrade on through trades or free-agency acquisitions. But lets face it, the Jazz are maxed out salary-wise. There are not going to be any big name free agent acquisitions. SO lets get a good trade done.

Jared buddy i love to disaggre with you on this one, well on a few pionts any way. For one Brewer is one of the most underated shooting gaurds in the league he does so much for the jazz it’s crazy. I would take him over 20 to 25 shooting gaurds in this league right now. You have Korver or Almond both stop and pop guys coming off the bench. I love Bewers game he gets it right to the rim off an easy shot he is one of the best defencsive shootin gaurds outside of D Wade. There is nothing wrong with Bewer you can say he is a stud on are team cause he is.
I agree with ya on CJ but, as far as AK manning up and taking his spot back that is all up to Jerry. AK wanted his spot from day one it was Jerrys call not to give it to him. Boozer is a cancer if he is hurt if he isn’t him and, Dwill are the next John to Karl combination in the league. He gets rebounds, has a decent mid range jumper and, runs the pick and role better then mostly any one in the league right now.
To me Okur is your cancer, he’s a black hole if you give him the ball make sure you go box some one out and get a rebound. I was really hoping to get rid of him this season. He is inconsistant he can’t play defence and come on if your 7 feet tall and weigh 270 you better get more then 7 rebounds a game there is no excuse for that. Not to mention he is a wimp he won’t go down there and, bang and play the way a center is suppose to play. W e should trade Okur for a guy liek anderw bogut or some thing like that

French Dude on July 02, 2009 said:

The Celtics bench killed lakers 2 years ago, but you’re right Jared, we must trade our 3 All star and re built around Deron, in the last 3 playoffs campaign, the only one to play as a All star was Deron, we need pittbull in this team, we need to play tough, and i don’t they are players you need to win a title. Our strenght is the team and with a point like Deron, every PF can be a All star, next year booz and memo will more think to their future contract than to play for the title, and they cost a lot, they will kill our future if we keep them, we don’t want the jazz will be the new Knicks

tman11 on July 02, 2009 said:

we just need a bull dog you have 3 maybe 4 potentail all stars on are team. That might be the problem with us is we have these guy that want to be all stars but can’t do it with out scoring pionts. So they have turned into ball hogs, like okur. I think we just need a nasty player on D a decent role player coming off the bench some one to go in and just beat up on guys. The last thing we need is anther guy to put pionts up on the board .

French Dude on July 03, 2009 said:

so let’s take Artest before the lakers do the deal

tman11 on July 03, 2009 said:

UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM to late on that Artest deal buddy. he is gone

French Dude on July 04, 2009 said:

bad news, for us and for the western for some years….., i will like a trade with bobcats for gerald Wallace and and Okafor, the two have reel impact in defense, a starting with Deron, Ronnie, Wallace, Booz or Millsap, and Okafor will scary many teams…..

tman11 on July 04, 2009 said:

Yeah i don;t like that idea Wallace is going down hill slowly and, Okafor has never lived up to his potentail. And you want to give up Deron and Ronny for that? The best piont gaurd in the league and, you want to give that up for anther center and small forward are two deepest positions on the team yeah that’s crazy

French Dude on July 05, 2009 said:

no you don’t understand me, i give Okur, Ak, or booz, i will never trade deron, he’s the best…… Deron, ronny, wallace, millsap, okafor, is a potential strating five for us

tman11 on July 05, 2009 said:

O ok i got ya now. I would trade those guys but, I don’t think you can get much value for them right now. I think we should just keep are team the way it is and, deal with this all next off season
