Paying to Win
Posted by Keith Haney on July 11, 2009

Have you ever seen the movie Amadeus? It’s about Mozart and a contemporary musician of his time – Salieri. Salieri was a good composer, but never great like Amadeus. The Jazz have been Salieri for the last 20 years. It’s time for them to become Mozart. How do they do that? They either pay the luxury tax this year and next season on top tier players or they remain stuck in mediocrity as the 5-8 seed in the West with a second round playoff exit at best.
On the table right now is the option for the Jazz to match Portland’s offer to Millsap. While there are a ton of ways this situation could play out, there are only two options that will make me happy as a season ticket holder. They both involve breaking open the piggy bank.
Option 1) Match the offer to Millsap AND keep Boozer.
If you want to win an NBA Championship over the next two seasons, YOU HAVE TO PAY THE TAX!!! Every contender in the league is over the luxury line for this season. Check out the top payrolls (with signed obligations to date) in the league for this coming season:
1. Los Angeles Lakers – $84,613,733
2. Boston Celtics -$79,230,991
3. New Orleans Hornets – $78,842,118
4. Washington Wizards – $75,808,291
5. Utah Jazz – $73,368,719
6. New York Knicks – $71,349,715
7. San Antonio Spurs – $71,135,775
8. Miami Heat – $69,681,632
9. Dallas Mavericks – $69,680,384
10. Denver Nuggets – $68,741,314
11. Cleveland Cavaliers – $68,280,965
12. Orlando Magic – $68,065,216
You’ll notice that almost all of those teams are contenders for a championship. Orlando and Cleveland’s payrolls will go up too as they finish off-season signings. You can see more details about each team here if you’d like. Nobody is missing from that list that is a contender. The closest teams would be Houston and Portland. Yao and T-Mac are finished and Portland will be WELL into the luxury tax if they sign Millsap or anyone this year for $8M and want to keep Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge beyond this season. Lesson here – if you want a championship, you have to pay to win.
Now, if you match for Millsap you probably have to trade for Boozer. You can’t trade him to get someone like Tyrus Thomas though – as rumored. Tyrus Thomas saves you money, he doesn’t get you a ring. Can we all agree on that?
The only way you trade Boozer is if you get a high quality small forward. I’m talking about a player like Caron Butler, Tayshaun Prince, or Gerald Wallace. Not Andres Nocioni or Corey Maggette. You don’t need to trade Boozer until mid-season if you match for Millsap. My preference would be to get Caron Butler. I would gladly throw in the high Knicks draft pick from 2010 if that’s what it cost too. Butler is that good and would help the Jazz tremendously on both sides of the court.
Under my Option 1, the Jazz would contend for a title with a lineup of Williams, Brewer, Butler, Millsap, and Okur. Bring in CJ Miles and AK to backup Butler and Millsap and you have a pretty good rotation. They’d have trading chips of Korver and Harping (both expiring contracts) too. How about sending them to New Orleans for Tyson Chandler in a 2-for-1 swap to help dump salary like the Hornets need?
Option 2) Don’t match Millsap, keep Boozer AND sign someone else to the full Mid-Level Exception.
Letting Millsap go allows for a couple of things. First, Utah keeps a better player in Boozer for this season. Boozer can’t afford to slack off during a contract year, so they know they are going to get top quality play from him. Second, they free up cap space to sign somebody in the Free Agent Bonanza that is the 2010 NBA off-season. Who they would sign in 2010 would depend on what draft pick the Jazz get from New York.
With Millsap gone, who do the Jazz sign to the full MLE (roughly $6M) this year? Of the 2009 free agents left, I’d go with David Lee, Lamar Odom, or Marvin Williams – in that order. Lee and Odom probably get matched by their respective teams (NY and LA) but you have to at least try right? Marvin Williams could be a bargain at $6M. He has the talent, he may just need the right coach in Sloan to bring it out of him.
I would hate to see Millsap go, but it’s hard to justify paying him $8M a year – luxury tax or not. He’s dang good and could get better but NBA players are judged by their play and their paycheck. You can’t talk about a player’s value without discussing both aspects.
The common factor in both options I see for the Jazz is that they have to pay the luxury tax. The Miller family and Jazz brass have committed to paying it if it means they can contend for a title this season. Money talks. I’ll listen if they spend some. If they don’t, my money is walking next year – you can have my season tickets. I’m done paying for mediocrity. I’m done watching Salieri. I want to see Mozart.

IF we sign milsap to a longterm deal and go into the luxery tax, its only crazy for one year unless we sign a superstart next year. Boozer will be gone and korver will be looking for a new contract as well. Grit your teeth and finish your last year with AK and if we do keep him, dont pay him that absurd amount we already did. So even if we did have to go into the tax, it could be for just a year or maybe two before we could relieve the pressure. I say thats a small price to pay in the long run of things.

The jazz already told Boozer they are not planning on keeping him. SO he is for sure out I would like to put anther option up on that board even though I know the jazz wouldn’t do t I would like to see it.
OPTION 3: We let Paul go I mean come on Paul is good but, not 8 million dollars good. Then you call up Steve Kerr with the SUNS and, make a Boozer and AK trade for Amre. Steve Kerr will change his whole team in a heart beat he doesn’t care and, the suns like AK enough to do it. they were going to trade last year for Shawn Marion who was loved down in AZ. so if you traded both Boozer and AK I think Steve would condsider it. that way you free up alot of cap room get rid of the two guys every one is disliking in utah and get a potentail super star on your team. it’s win win for every one I fell. the suns get anther player in AK to play run and, gun basketball with along with Boozer who will replace the duties of Shaq and, we get a guy that can run the pick and role with Dwill and, play defence.
I know alot of people are sayin what about dept at that position but to me Kosta can back up Amre and, do just as good if not better job then what Milsap could. I think that would be a great move for us and, also the suns

i think we should have this roster:
pg-deron williams, ronnie price, eric maynor
sg-ronnie brewer, kyle korver
sf-caron butler, cj miles
pf-memo okur, milsap, koufas
c-tyson chandelair, fez and if needed koufas or okur could play it
we could get caron butler by trading boozer and our 1st round draft pick and get tyson chandelair by ak or matt harpring or other guys with draft picks
-thanks
thanks

It’s not how much they spend, but what they end up with at the end of the day. Overspending could, and has, crippled them to this point, putting them in this situation.
Match Millsap, keep Boozer, until a beneficial trade can be made, or his salary goes off the books.

From the current situation of Boozer and his attitude in early Dec., Boozer has to be traded. But the good news is that Boozer is so valuable at the trading market.
The price for Millsap is too high. Signing him is going to affect the future of jazz. Jazz should have offered Millsop a lot earlier. Jazz made a huge mistake.

in the first year of milsaps deal he’ll make like 11-12 mill. but in the last 3 he’ll be around 6 mill a year. which i think is about right as far as how much he’s worth. so i say match it. and i would personally love a ak+harpring for mcrady trade for the long term benefit of the team considering we wont compete for a title this year anyway regardless of what we do.

that is proof of a 3 team trade thats beneficial to all involved. chicago gets boozer, hornets get harpring and korver, and utah gets chandler, tyrus thomas and tim thomas

Really you think Paul should get paid that much? did you know Lamar Odom is getting paid 4 million this year. nothing against Paul but, he isn’t even half as good as Lamar. I’m a beliver he isn’t worth over 5 mill espcially since Boozer is still on are team. Even if he wasn’t though he still isn’t worth that much money no way i would pay him that. Kosta can put up stats like that and we can pay him 1 mill for anther two years let Paul go and, Kosta can fill in or, do even bettr then Paul did.
spenser on July 12, 2009 said:
tman11, lamar odom is making 4 mill this year even though he is worth over 10. with how much milsap means to the jazz franchise and the fact that milsap after 3 years is just as good as boozer was after 3 years and boozer improved, which leads me to believe that milsap will get alot better as well considering he has a much stronger work ethic. and really at the 4 position they are both undersized. milsap more than makes up for his undersized body with heart, determination and hard work.
spenser on July 12, 2009 said:
oh and as for odom making 4 mil get off your butt and do some research, the lakers are offering him 8 million a season

I dont care what the jazz do with trades. As long as we dont have boozer and Ak on our team by the first game of the year then I will be happy. You can trade boozer for haffa alrujo or mark madsen and believe it or not i would be more excited watching them than watching boozer again.
tman11 on July 12, 2009 said:
the Orginall offer was 4 jack ass. But even at that 8 million dollars and, Odom is 3 or 4 times as good as Milsap. Milsap has improved much over three years just got more playing time and, put into more a role situtation . There is no proof that he will improve with time. But there is proof that goes against him improving. Like for the fact he has been up here for 3 year and, his jump shot has not really improved.and he still can’t use both hand around the basketball. You sit here and, talk about his work ethic but, come on I hear every player on the jazz being a hard working that is all you hear about are players. So that tells me either all are players just have crazy work ethic and, he will improve but, so will every one else so it won’t make any difference or, that what they are saying is kind of BS. If Milsap stays are garntee you Kosta will have his job in a year he isn’t that great of a player.

Well sorry to make you an unhappy person Lew but, atleast one of them will be around by game one of next season. Boozer to me is goiung to be gone but, AK is tough to find a place to move him to. The best option with him is Golden State Don neilson loves AK and, the way he plays. But the jazz don’t like what they have to offer it seems like because if we did we would have traded him last year. They already told Boozer he is gone though so that should make you kind of happy.

if only the suns would trade stoudamire for ak.

I think if you threw Boozer with Ak they would make that deal. They were looking to trade Amre last season I honestly think they would consider that offer. If i was the jazz I would try and, make a deal for him.

Keep Millsap and Boozer unless a really good trade opportunity comes up for Boozer. Boozer WILL play well this year, it’s pretty much guaranteed. It’s time to pay up and win. It gets tiresome to be so thrifty only to keep on losing. Deron Williams deserves a team willing to spend money to compete. Keeping both would give Millsap one more year to improve his offense and get the pick and roll down. If he fails then the Jazz could beg Boozer to sign another contract when his is up and trade Millsap instead. If Millsap does step up to the starter task, then you can just let Boozer walk at the end of his contract. There is no reason to trade away Boozer right now for a handful of beans.
