10 Questions for the Upcoming Season
Posted by Keith Haney on August 17, 2009

OK. It’s the doldrums of Summer. NBA news is scarce in August and Jazz updates are even scarcer. There is only so much that can be written about Boozer’s foolish radio interviews or where he might be traded.
So I’ve been thinking about the top 10 questions I’ll be looking to get answered this season. Here they are.
10) After the Hall of Fame Induction, will we ever see Stockton again?
Mark September 10-12 on your calendar. That’s when Jerry Sloan and John Stockton officially get inducted into the Hall of Fame. Since he shows up about as often as Boozer’s defense, I wonder if it may be the last time we ever see Stockton in public too! I mean, what other event is going to bring him out of his hole in Spokane, Washington? Last year, they broadcast the induction ceremony on NBATV. They are sure to do it again this year with Jordan being inducted. With the Jazz roster staying virtually the same this season, I”m hoping this isn’t the highlight of the year!
9) Will Eric Maynor become the backup point guard?
With the 20th pick, the Jazz selected a rookie point guard out of VCU. Gone is Brevin Knight. Presumably, Ronnie Price will be the 2nd string PG, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Maynor move up the depth chart. Here’s to hoping he can quickly turn into a respectable backup to D-Will. It’s hard to prove, but how much would having a decent backup point guard have helped the Jazz last season? If it had meant 2 more wins, that would have played the Jazz as the 6th seed. A big difference. It could be the same situation this year.
8) Can Miles earn his paycheck?
Does the average fan realize that if he had gone to college, CJ Miles would have just completed his senior year? This should be his rookie season, not fourth year in the league. Paying nearly $4M a year for his salary, the Jazz are hoping for big returns this season out of the guard. I’m inclined to think CJ will retain his starting role at the small forward on the team. I’m just hoping he can become a consistent outside threat as well as a reliable defender this year. This is his chance to shine and be the starting 3 on this team for years to come. Or maybe he’ll just end up being the next version of DeShawn Stevenson.
7) Where will Boozer’s next stop on the crazy train be?
I’m ranking this question so low on the list because it seems like a foregone conclusion he will be traded. It’s a matter of when, not if. Here’s to hoping he is sent packing before he does any real damage to the psyche of this team. Is it wrong to hope his actions this summer lead him to making less next year with a new team than with the Jazz? With the state of the economy, my wish might just come true.
6) Will Harpring play again?
There have been a few local articles reporting that Harpring may actually retire instead of playing out the last year of his contract due to his bum knees and ankles. While it would be a benefit to the Jazz financially should Matt retire and take some sort of buyout from the team, it would be a tough loss for them. Every team in the league needs a player like Harpring to do the dirty work. I don’t know who would fill that role if he left.
5) Will WIlliams be on the All-Star Team?
Everyone knows he’s one of the best guards in the league, but going into his 5th season, Williams still hasn’t been an All-Star. Sure, the game is a popularity contest, but at the end of a player’s career, it’s nice to have a lot of selections on the resume. This should be Williams year finally. He’ll be fighting for a spot with Chris Paul and Tony Parker. I think this will be the first of many selections to come for him even if Paul and Parker make the team.
4) What pick will the Knicks give the Jazz in 2010?
This may be the most exciting thing to watch this upcoming season – the train wreck that will be the New York Knicks. With every loss they suffer, the Jazz move closer to potentially stealing a #1 pick in the 2010 draft since they own the Knicks pick. Barring some miracle trade in their favor this season, they should be one of the worst teams in the league. I predict they will be fighting it out with Sacramento for the worst record. If that happens and the Jazz fall backwards into the #1 overall pick for 2010 it could be the missing piece that pushes the Jazz over the top and into a championship.
3) Will someone step up and defend the middle?
The one goal heading into this offseason after losing to the Lakers again was to get some defensive help in the middle. Nothing has been done to improve this situation so it’s still an unanswered question. Perhaps having Millsap start at the Power Forward will help some. Perhaps AK will move back to his natural spot and play more of the 4 once Boozer is sent packing. Whatever the answer, it’s a question that still needs to be addressed. Without answering this one, the team will likely run into another early playoff exit.
2) Will the team stay healthy?
I’m not asking for or expecting an injury free season. I just want to know if they’ll avoid the types of major injuries the team suffered last season. This is a team that has been together with the same players for a couple of years now. If they are going to make a run in the playoffs, it would help to have some continuity in the lineup during the regular season.
1) What impact will the Salary Cap / Luxury Tax have on the team?
Nobody knows where the salary cap and luxury tax are going to wind up at the end of this coming season, but everyone agrees they will be much lower than current levels. With the Miller family about to pay the luxury tax for the first time in team history, it’s a safe bet the salary cap and tax will be talked about ad nauseum this season. The cap is projected to be in the low $50 million range for 2010/2011. As of today, the Jazz have already committed over $50M in salaries for next year and that only covers 7 players! They will definitely be over the cap, now the have to decide whether or not they want to pay the tax two years in a row to be competitive or tighten up the purse strings.
One thing’s for certain, the 2009/10 season is going to be an eventful one for the Jazz both on and off the court. I hope the answers to the questions above come in the form of some positive news for the team. Good or bad, I’m tired of the Summer news drought. Give me some answers!

good list of questions. I certainly hope that Stockton isn’t the most exciting part of our season. I wonder if everyone would be so down with the team staying the same if we hadn’t had all the injuries we had last season. Remember at the beginning of last season when everyone thought we were only 2nd to the Lakers in the West. ..I know other teams have improved but I still think there’s hope with this roster. At least I hope so with how much money is being put into it.
I don’t know how I feel about CJ yes he is the age of a rookie but he has been in the NBA for four years and he has only ahd a handful of good/great games. I personally don’t know why the Jazz matched OKC’s offer. I know they don’t want to give up on talent but could their money have been spent better with a veteran for more stability.
It sure will be exciting to see what happens the rest of the summer or before the trade deadline. I just hope Booz returning if he does won’t destroy the season from the start.

Sorry to say, but looking at the possible trades and lack of any 3rd teams with any cap space to defer salary, Boozer appears to have more value staying on the Jazz, as an expiring contract and roster spot next year. I think he will be back and play. It’s probably only 50/50 that he will be traded before the deadline. Looking at not only this year, but 2010, it may be better to keep him, than to trade him.:-(
NY will, unfortunately, do better than any of us want, but it is still a lottery…so, keep your fingers crossed.
Matt doesn’t give any salary cap relief without a buyout, retirement nor not. I don’t know about insurance reimbursement. You would have to guess, that he will try to play and get a buyout later in the year. I’m not sure if a buyout has to be before the Feb trade deadline or not, but expect the Jazz to wait until the last minute, so they don’t have to take on another player and salary. Even if he isn’t playing 12 players are more than enough to have plenty of bench available.
Will we ever see Stockton, let alone the AGAIN.
Without a game being played, it sure looks like the Spurs out foxed the Jazz in the 2nd round. You have to wonder if Maynor was the best choice. I doubt Maynor can beat out Price this year, maybe next.

ANSWERS .
QUESTION 10: I don’t think will ever see STOCKTON. AGAIN! That guy is so incognito in SPOKANE its ridiculous. That’s a sad thing REALLY, I really wish he would come out and be like an assistant on the JAZZ staff or jus a COACH in general. Any level. HIz SKILL at the POINT is so INSANE. STOCKON created PLAYERS like TONY PARKER, Steve NASH, D-WILL and CP3 all of them mimic STOCKTONS moves. Can’t WAIT to see him in the HALL A FAME INDUCTIONS.
Eric Maynor won’t become BACK up PG. did you see RP in the last 4 minutes of GAME 5. NO WAY MAYNOR gets back up PG
MILES is soft; BOOZER mania will begin in CAMP at Boise, HARPRING iz DONE.
QUESTION 5, is a good one. Over the past 2 seasons D WILL has been stiffed by all-star voters because of the JAZZ poor performance during ALL-STAR selection. If THE JAZZ have a good record expect to see D-WILL in DALLAS, however if the JAZZ record isn’t up to PAR it could possibly be a TOSS up? But D-WILL will make this YEARs all-star game. AFTER all isn’t he from the DALLAS area??
KNICKS are going to do descent; I actually don’t see them being a lottery team. I predict the KNICKS make the playoffs.
QUESTION 3: when BOOZER is in, NO! MILLSAP in, YES. If BOOZER plays awesome D-FENSE or at least a-ok DEFENSE. we have a chance of winning a good amount of our BACK2BACK sets.
QUESTION 2: all we can do is HOPE and pray. so PRAY!
And the final QUESTION. The LUXURY tax will be chatted up all SEASON. The luxury TAX will be associate to the JAZZ’s every BASKET, every TURNOVER, every LOSS and every VICTORY. The luxury tax will possibly be in conversations in NBA 2k10 for XBOX. BOLERJACK will say something at least once in every telecast.

I have to agree JR , I dont think that NY will have the season that we all would like . None the less at least we still get a Lottery pick from them .
I think that RP is going to back D-Will up this next season . I expect that we will see more improvement with him running the show rather than BK . Maynor is only a rookie and we all know that Coach Sloan will not play him as much .
I think that CJ will have a better year this year . I am one to believe that this kid has tons of potential .
I think that Harpring will retire if not this season , then next season .
I am sure that we will have a better season , I cant imagine us having the injuries that we had last season .
Last but not least , I am sure that D-Will would have been an All-Star last season had he not been hurt at the begining . I expect that he will play with a vengence this season to prove that he deserves the selection .

10 This one is really easy John llikes his privacy so of course he’s isn’t going to get a job with ESPN or some place we wont see him again bye bye John great time we had
9. I honestly hope Jerry plays the kid as back up. No offence to Price great player and, all but he isn’t a true PIONT GUARD like Maynor is. Maynor can run a team better if he is ready get him in .
8 All I can say is no CJ should have gone to College he wasn’t at all ready for the NBA. He can’t paly up at this level and, earn that much money he isn’t that good.
7Like i sad many time before, if we can’t get anything good for Boozer keep him aroung until the trade deadline. Just tell him put up and, shut up if not we can pull a maurbury with ya and, bench your sorry ass. Kiss your trade value away so keep him for as long as u can but, we need to get him out this season.
6Good question honesly I have no answer to this one Matt loves the games but, with his play time going down dramatically. I think I going to say matts gone also
5Unless Dwill gets hurt i don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t be. He is the second or third best PG in the league he should be in the All Star game.
4 the Knicks will be 5 or 6 in my mind so I wouldn’t be surprised in for a top five pick it’s going to be great.
3 The only way the jazz are going to do better in the middle is if we trade Boozer or Okur for some one who can help out in down there. AK natural position is a 3 not a 4 so he wouldn’t help out if you moved him up to a 4.
2They have to stay heathly they really don’t have to many choices. To many players have to prove themselfs, if they don’t were done. Careers are on the line
1 Not it wont have any effect on the jazz we will get it worked out before any thing bad happens

Question 11) Will we get some better people to replace KOC! We need some upper management able to make the big trades possible to bring the right talent into our team. Having Williams, top point guard, Okur, top 5 center (look at his stats last year as a center, he’s easily top five) Millsap and Boozer, but we still can’t get it done. We need a defensive x-factor and upper management can’t seem to reel in the right player.
And the draft, I don’t know what the Jazz where thinking. A 3rd string pt guard and a poor center who won’t even get signed, that was a comlete waste! Even if we get a top 5 pick next year, are the Jazz going to be able to capitalize on it????

10=yes, who knows maybe we will see him on the sidelines coaching future Jazz games. Hey, you never know. 9=No, not yet but maybe in a year or two. Remember Sloan does not play rookies. So Maynor might be in the D-league for awhile, and then once Sloan decides he’s gettting tired of Price he will use Maynor, and we will see how he does, as backup. 8=No, I’ve actually given up hope on Miles, I hope he is traded along with Booze come trade deadline. 7=Yes, booze will be gone come Feb. to which team, I suspect Miami, but by end Dec.-Mid Jan. another team might pop up in the trade rumors. 6=No, harpring should retire soon, AK might be able to fill his shoes, or maybe we could make a trade and bring in both Beasley and Shane Battier, now that could really help us, especially filling up Harpring’s shoes. 5=Yes, Definite yes. 4=The knicks pick could go several ways, we could go big big and get a guy like Greg Monroe from Georgetown(Great hands, nice outside jumper, decent rebounding skills, but not excellent, and he’s 6′10, he could be a future C-webb, or we could go small and select a pure shooter like Paul George out of Fresno State, or Evan Turner out of Ohio State, or maybe Devin Ebanks (Check out nbadraft.net to see who could possibly be our knicks pick. Yes, the Knicks will make the lottery, I don’t care if they so sign Sessions, and resign Lee, they still have holes at SG and C, They also have no depth, there is no way they will make the playoffs. we should get anywhere between 5-9 pick in the 2010 draft. 3=No, unless we trade Booze for Amare or Bosh, than that middle is still gonna be pretty open. Millsap is just too small to guard the big guys. A 6′8 PF can only do so much. 2=Yes, with this year being Booze’s contract year, he will play his best ball and do his best not to get injured, just to please his suitors. 1=huge impact, have you seen how much we have been trying to trade Booze, if he didn’t have such a bad season last year, he would have already been off the team. Last year’s disappointing season, and his attitude has really hurt Booze’s trade value, and this also ends up hurting the Jazz too.
Here’s hoping for a good season.

Jerry doesn’t play Rookies but, I can see if he goes out the first ten games in junk minute situations and plays well. I could see jerry playing a Rookie and, I hope he does it brings him along faster and, he is better then price.
this one is for question 3 et rid of Okur and, Boozer and, you will get better in the middle. It might take a minute for him to be good and, I don’t know if it will work out or not but what about. Getting rid of Boozer and Okur to mephis for Thabeet either Marc Gasol or Zach rapholph and, Marcus williams or Jaric. They get more telented and, instant help and, we get a huge boost in the middle and, a back up piont guard. It might take Thabeet a minute to really poduce heavy but, he has got tons of size and, can blocks shots like no ones bisiness. Gasol or Zach I would prefer Zach for his height and, age but both of them have more then proven them self and they would optate similar to what would. I like that idea but, that is just me
as far as every thing else i agree with most on here I hope the knicks play badly but, they got alot of talent on that team if Dan gets them playing together they could move up a little but, I’m still not going to say higher then 10th or 11th.
I’m also scared about the heathly issues if you remember Dwill it wasn’t just Boozer that got hurt. Dwill was down Okur was down AK went down Milsap showed he was vonurable. It really does scare me. I think it will be better then last year but, we get hit with the injury bug alot and, it’s just not Boozer.
Wompus your answer to question 11 is we don’t need a new GM of the team KOC has done his job and, got player that can get us to the promise land. Jerry and, the players mostly the stars need to put the piecesof the puzzle together on how to get there. KOC has done an amazing job with this team and, has earn the right to stay as long as he wants to

man we got to realize that this was a freakin weak draft class. i mean there was no question that blake griffin was going to be number 1 and probably rookie of the year. and many still ask if he will get anywhere near star status. i say no. but what does that say about the draft class if every sports writer and critic asks if the number one draft pick and probable rookie of the year if he will be a chump or star pretty much shows that the draft sucked this year. so i figure that the jazz choice to draft a backup pg was a good decision because that is what we lacked last year. yeah price had a wonderful last 10 mins of the playoffs but that doesnt mean a thing! look and sasha v from the lakers. the only reason he is making the money he is now is because he did pretty well in the finals against the celtics, but have you seen that guy? i swear i’ve seen high school girls that would do better in the nba than he has done. so the jazz fans shouldnt just hope for a top 5 pick but we should also hope that it will be a strong draft! because if it isnt then it’s just a wasted top pick. and it has to be the right one too! how many top picks expected to do well have been bust? shawn bradly anyone? tractor traylor! mateen freakin cleeves… yeah. and i do expect that we will see stockton working with the pg’s this season but thats just what i think, maybe get a future coaching position, i think he would be a freakin amazing coach. and getting zach randolf would be a salary killer haha but i doubt that any deals will be made with memphis crappy team doesnt do too well for the players resumes
tman11 on August 19, 2009 said:
He would be a contract killer but, that’s why I said I like Marc Gasol would would be better but, Zach would be great because his style fits the jazz. I would make that deal in a heart beat
dwilljazz8 on August 20, 2009 said:
t-man, what are you thinking, that is possibly the worst trade you have come up with. Yes, I agree a big man down low, someone who can defend the middle better, but Randolph and Thabeet are not the answer. Here’s why Thabeet is raw, and Randolph is wearing down, and just isn’t the player that we need. Here’s is my idea. we keep Okur, and we wait until Jan- mid Feb to trade Boozer. By then Booze should have plenty of time to show his suitors what he is worth. Then around that time we trade him and CJ Miles to Pheonix for Amare Stoudamire. I love this trade because Amare is big(6′11), is a defensive presence, so he can play both Center and Power Forward, also he is great with the Pick n’ Roll. We love to run that play so why not get him, and take advantage of his strengths. The Suns were already thinking of trading Amare, so we just need to send the right pieces to Phoenix, which is why it is key that we wait until Jan-Mid. Feb, and then we start talking to the Suns about the idea.

“Amare…is a defensive presence”
So is a pile of dead catfish.
tman11 on August 20, 2009 said:
I like i said I would take Marc Gasol if they would give him up instead. Thabeet is raw but, even with him being raw he still has alot more going for him then Okur you guys want to improve in the middle what, could help out more then a 7′1 pwoer foward that is showing he can play in this league and a 7′3 block machine. as far as Arme goes your going to have to give up more then that to the suns.that;s the face of there franchise and, one of the best power forwards in the leauge CJ and Boozer isn’t going to get Arme to the jazz.
Brian McCann on August 20, 2009 said:
Dwilljazz8- Amare plays about as much D as Carlos. Still, i would make that trade simply because I think Carlos hass burned his bridge with the Jazz.
eZAy801 on August 20, 2009 said:
I like the trade idea of AMARE STOUDAMIRE. If the JAZZ wanna gamble and wait until the trade dead line to trade boozer that’s all fine and dandy. However, I think we should pull off a trade that involves MEMET OKUR and cj miles to PHONEIX for AMARE STOUDAMIRE. This trade proposal is highly unlikely but something similar to it may raise interest to phoenix . AMARE in general will bring the DEFENSIVE PRESENTS we so badly need HOWEVER I think he needs to wear protective eye gear. CAN’T AFFORD another finger to the eye. BOOZER issue is still a bit COMPLEX HOWEVER trading him for a 2 OR 3 would be wise. Obviously.
Go JAZZ!!
tman11 on August 20, 2009 said:
I agree with Brian Amre brings just as much D to utah as carlos does. He is better offencsively then Boozer and, can run the pick and role better with Dwill then I think boozer can. If you want Arme so bad and, since it seems like every hates AK throw him in on a deal. He has got really high trade value with the suns just from the fact he fits there game plan perfectly I think they would be more likely to make the Amre deal if it was AK and Cj rather then Okur and CJ, The only problem with that is it leaves you with nothing at Small forward and we would be having Brewer or some one fill in at small wich isn’t his position. You can always make that trade and, get a small forward with a Boozer trade as well but, what ever we aren’t going to see any deals happen with the jazz until at least December
JayD on August 21, 2009 said:
I myself disagree with that trade idea . I dont think that Amare fills the need that we have in the post . I also dislike the idea of getting rid of Okur and CJ .
Boozer is the one that is most likely going to get the boot anyway . Whether it is at the trade deadline or at the end of the season . So we should find a deal that will fit the Jazz ‘ s needs .

can some one please tell me what the jazz see in CJ or Okur?Okur is a shooting guard in a centers body. It’s sad when he can’t even paly his position and, keeps getting burned on defence. CJ is just some kid that has a big head about his game but, can’t back it p I honestly don’t see why we have either one of them. I would much rather have Boozer then both of those guys. At least he can go out there and be physical, Okur doesn’t know how to play physical and, if cj took it hard to the bucket he would break a leg or some thing but, what ever lets just get rid of all of them and, start over fresh because they are all crazy to have on are team except for dwill. Ak is overpaid, Boozer is a whiney, Okur can’t play center and, CJ just can’t paly period

Man I hope so! 7) I’m actually starting to think we might be stuck with the Booze until the end of the season. 6) I’m guessing Harpring is done and I don’t know where we will make up that toughness. 5) Resounding YES! 4) I just am going to try and persuade karma by begging for the #1 pick. PLEASE! 3) I’m still going with no. Sigh. 2) I think we’ll see the normal wear and tear with Okur’s back but AK is supposedly bulking up and if Boozer gets injured he can say bye bye to a big payday next season. 1) I love the Jazz no matter how much or how little they pay.
