CJ Has A Lot To Prove
Posted by Brian McCann on August 27, 2009

I went back east on a business trip a couple of weeks ago, and decided to stay in New York City over the weekend to visit some friends that are living out there for the summer. They live in a 30 story high-rise in New Rochelle, and their rent is equal to about double my mortgage. One of my buddies (who knows how big of a Jazz homer I am) was excited to tell me that one of the players on the Jazz had been visiting his building all summer because his mom lives there. I asked him who it was, and of course, he had no idea, so I started asking some of his neighbors, and found out it was CJ Miles. I had heard CJ was in New York training for the summer, and since I was staying in his mom’s building, I hoped I would see him, but I had no such luck. I asked my friend if he knew where CJ’s mom lived, and he had no idea. I’m not sure why I really wanted to know…it’s not like I was going to go knock on her door to ask her questions about her son. I’m sure that would have led to an embarrassing call to security for no real reason. What would I have said to her? I guess I could have asked, as a concerned fan of course, how his training was going. In any case, I didn’t, and it’s probably better that way. My friend did ask me if CJ was any good, and I really didn’t know what to say. I mean I wanted to say yes, I really did, but the best I could do was to say he had a lot of potential.
CJ is an enigma to me. Every once in a while he will have an amazing breakout kind of game that sends the blogosphere into an uproar. More often than not though, his mediocrity mostly just disappoints. He has an extremely athletic Kobe-esque body, but he seems scared, complacent, and out of sync most times instead of fearless, driven, and smart. He doesn’t play D, and his offensive game revolves around camping out at the three point line where he is a very mediocre 34% shooting for his career. He rarely drives, rarely hustles, and rarely produces.
I guess the hardest thing for me is that CJ does seem to have a lot of potential. Every once in a while, he will jump through the roof and dunk over a couple of guys in the lane, or throw down 30 points on 10 for 12 shooting. I think his biggest problem is that he has not yet developed a desire to lay it all out on the floor. He has the perfect body for a two-guard, and is extremely talented, but a strong desire could make all the difference in his career. He could be an all-star or he could end up like Deshawn Stevenson; a player with all the potential in the world, but that never seems to realize it.
I know CJ is still extremely young, and that if he would have gone to college that he would just be entering the NBA, but the point is he didn’t go to college. He chose the NBA. He decided that he was NBA ready. He has played with NBA players for four years now, and its time for him to step it up. The Jazz need consistency from the two, and if CJ wants to remain a starter, he needs to earn it.
The “young and learning” excuse can only go so far. Its time for CJ to have a breakthrough season, or its time for the Jazz to start looking at their options for a replacement in the starting lineup.
Hopefully all of that training in New York will pay off this year.

This is his year to prove himself or we will see him in a different jersey next year.

Ah, to live in New York City…….anyway, I agree. He better be showing that potential that people talk about otherwise he should be gone!

I disagree the year to prove himself already came and, gone it was last year. He was off the mephs I think when we matched there offer and, he came on back got a staring role and evey thing else and, he didn’t show up. He needs to go he might go off for 30 pionts on some very rare moment but, even when he does he doesn’t play defence or get rebounds to save him. There is more to basketball then putting the ball in the bucket. To me we gave him the chance last year he didn’t show up so he needs to go. His body might be young but, he is still a 4 year vet I’m a professional basketball sense and, if you haven’t showed up yet your pretty much done. CJ the door is shuting fast I hope you missed out on your chance with the jazz go some where else with Boozer and, have a good life. You didn’t show us you can show up so bye have a great life.

I think that CJ can and will have a good year this season . I still beleive that his talent is there , he is capable of an all-star status . If he can get a little more agressive , we will see that talent come alive . But I sadly agree that his door is starting to close if he cannot put it all together this year .
I really dont want to see him go to another team only to be our worst enemy when we play the team that he goes to .
Mark my word he will be an all-star before his carreer is over . So I say give him that chance to do it here .
Go Jazz !!!!!

I definitely think he needs to improve his overall game but i don’t think he had an awful season or anything that bad. If he were a rookie last year, most would say ge had a pretty good year. He’d young enough where he will still get better though, so I still have faith.

So this is pretty ironic. I just got home from a company basketball tournament. We played the last four Thursdays in the Jazz practice facility. It was fun to be on the court and see the facilities, So the prior three times we had been there, of course no players were to be seen. But tonight C.J. Miles and Tyrone Corbin walked into the gym as we were playing. So they went to the corner hoop and did some shooting drills. Of course as I was sitting out, I watched C.J. Here are my observations; He looks a little bulkier. Not too much, but it looked like he had put on some good weight. Second, his shot looked good as always. He looks pretty smooth coming off screens and catching and shooting. The third thing, which is actually negative, was that he isn’t the quickest guy. He looked kind of slow for a starting nba 2 or 3 coming of the dribble. He would catch the ball, do the triple threat position, and make a move to the basket. He didn’t seem like he had a quick first step. Basically as I was watching him I thought to myself that C.J. is never going to create his own shot, which will ultimately hold him back from all pro status.

i still think the jazz made a mistake siging him last year. I didn’t care at the time, but now that the luxury tax is going to be imposed he is definately more expendable than some of the guys.

I too have had my doubts about CJ in the past and was a little disappointd when they met the Oklahoma City offer for him. But I listened to an interview a couple of days ago with CJ and David Locke and he sounds like his has grown up a great deal and has a pretty firm grasp on his diffficulties from the past and how he can make the changes he needs to in order to be a ligitimate starter in the NBA. From what I have read and heard about him this summer he is on the right track. And hanging out and practicing with D. Will and Millsap should rub off on him. So far it has all been words, but I am anxious to see if he can put it into action this fall.

CJ is definitely a lower end starting SF in the NBA, but for his age (22) and his salary ($3.7 million), he’s not necessarily out of line with what we should expect out of him. (It’s just that he isn’t excelling at anything.) Here are his ranks among other SF’s in the league:
Points- 20th
Assists- 15th
Rebounds- 27th
FG%- 20th
3pt%- 25th
I would be happy this year if he could work on being a better defender, crash the boards a bit more, drive to the basket more, and improve his 3pt%. He has a beautiful looking jump shot so I definitely think he should be closer to the top 10 in 3pt%.

4 year vet or not, he is young young young! this year could be the year we lose patience should his total game not be up to par.
i think back to last year; i saw flashes of great ability but when it wasn’t there i noticed that he was still trying to do the right thing on the floor, he just wasn’t executing.
practice makes perfect – or you could end up on a different team.
there’s my 2-cents. … can i have some change back?

I also heard his interview with David Locke, and he sounded really good. Locke actually asked when did he turn 30 or 40, just because he sounded so grown up, that little kid in him that was there 2 or 3 years ago was not there anymore. Usually players show what is going to happen their entire career(production wise) around there 3rd year, but with CJ it is different because he came straight from High School. I agree he should have gone to college, but since he didn’t this is his year to show what he can really do, and from his interview, it sounds like this should be a good year for him. He is looking bulkier(that is what I heard from his mouth in the interview) He ran plays with Paul and Dwill, so their hard work ethic hopefully will rub off on him.

You guys are right he is only 22 but, he has played in the NBA for four season that is a lot of were and tear on your body. When you come out at 18 you usually don’t play passed 32 34 just because you started palying pro ball earlier. I hope every one is right that he will have a great year but, I honestly don’t see it he is way to raw. WHen all you have is an outside shot you are introuble up at that level. He needs to put on about 30 pounds and get some guts before he can be a solid player. If he hasn’t made an effort to do this in his first four years in the league what makes people think he will do it now? It’s like Paul Milsap he need to put on wieght or get an outside shot and, he hasn’t done either that’s the reason he will never be a star in this league. He may work hard but, they don’t work on the right things. Like I said if he gasn’t started working on this now what makes you think he is going to start now? I just don’t see it but, I hope I’m wrong

To TMan, CJ said that Millsap improved his perimeter game.
CJ needs to drive to the basket more. Good things happen when he does. When he is known to do this. He will start to get more open looks. So I think he needs improved rebounding and better penetration.
tman11 on August 31, 2009 said:
I hope Paul did because if he didn’t Kosta will be taking his spot. Freat back up but, Paul isn’t a starter. CJ need to bulk up before any time I’m concernd about that little boy getting hurt. then he needs to learn how to rebounds and take it hard to the hole. There is just to much for him to put into his game to be contribute. I honestly dont see it trade him now while he still has trade value. I don’t see him doing any thing in this league

I’m not for sure where the information came from but Cj’s mom does not live in NY. His parents still live in Dallas, Tx were he is from. Cj works out in NY every summer so Im sure that apartment ia probably is where he was staying during the summer not his mom and dad.

Lanis- Like I said, i never saw her. Maybe she has just been there with him visiting, I don’t know. Several people just told me they saw her and CJ there often, and that she wass living there. Wish I could be more help, but that’s all I know!

Brian, I’m telling you because I am Cj’s mother. I live in Dallas,TX not NY. I was not in NY this summer at all.

Lanis Miles! You know, I was going to ask you if there was any relation, but I didn’t want to pry. Wow, it is a pleasure to have you reading my blog. I appologize for the mis-information. This is a great example of how rumors spread…maybe it is where CJ lives, like I said, I don’t know. I will let my friends know that you never lived there. Were you ever out there to visit? They said they saw CJ often, maybe they saw you with him one time or something while you were visiting him. Thank you for clearing that up.
I am guessing from a mother’s perspective, blogs like this one can be frustrating. I am excited to watch him play this year, because it sounds like he has taken this off-season very seriously. I really do like him and want him to succeed in a Utah uniform.
Thanks again for clearing that up. What are your feelings on the up-coming season?
Lanis Miles on September 17, 2009 said:
No problem. The blogs are not frustrating, a little funny really. Doesn’t bother me about what people think. Everyone has a right to their on opinions. Cj has always been a hard worker. I know that and he knows that. That’s all that matters. I am looking forward to the season as always. And yes Cj has really worked hard this summer but that something he does every summer.

Lanis- well I am excited to see him play this year. I have heard he has put on a little weight and has been practicing hard with Deron and Paul. I really hope he does well this year.
I have an idea for a blog post that I wanted to see if you would be interested in. CJ is a fan favorite-his attitude and smile have won over Utah fans everywhere. He came into the league really young, and I would love to write a post about what its like as a mother to have a son enter the NBA as young as CJ was. It would all be positive, but I think our readers would be very interested in it. I could just type up ten questions or so and email them to you if it is something you would like to do. My email address is theagreement@hotmail.com if you are ok with it, shoot me an email and I’ll respond back with the questions.
Again, it is a pleasure to have you on our blog. Wow- thanks again for the insight!
