Dodgeball Recap Day at the ‘Bot’

Admittedly, Deron Williams isn’t quite sure where the idea for a charity dodgeball tournament came from. He and Kyle Korver just wanted to do something that was different, fun, and would involve lots of people. Kind of like an event Korver did last year where he raised $10,000 for charity by organizing and participating in a 25 hour long, Guinness Book of World Records certified, longest game of kickball in history.

The “Dodge Barrage” registration originally got off to a slow star. There was not a lot of interest. Then a couple of short videos featuring the two players went viral on the web. The success from the videos actually caused the event to close registration early and left 45 hopeful teams on a waiting list. The players said they plan to do the event again next year – hopefully with a bigger venue that would allow as many 100  teams to participate.

The event was successful on two levels.  It raised money and none of the players got hurt.  Between team registration fees, spectator donations, and little ‘something something’ from the players -$20,000 will be donated to The Christmas Box House Shelter.  When asked what Coach Sloan thought of the players playing in such an event Korver suggested disappointment that Sloan was unable to participate in the tournament with them.  He did though admit that Coach being inducted to the Hall of Fame was a pretty good excuse to not be there.

Jazzbots was happy to participate on a few different levels – the following blogs are by some of the bloggers at the event.

I had the intention on writing something on this but I have been SWAMPED the last few days with work and other priorities. I actually started writing a my next blog on my laptop on the bus (Still pending). However, I feel pretty confident that everything was covered by my counterparts! I just have to say that it was sooo much fun even though we got our bruised up hind ends handed to us on a silver plate. By every team out there. The real highlight was having the opportunity to see and actually hang out with and talk to the players. I would do it again without hesitation and have to say that it was probably the best $45 I have ever spent!
