Magic Almonds and New Blood

Morris Almond
According to the Orlando Sentinel, Morris Almond will be working out for the Magic when training camp opens up on September 29th.  Apparently, the Magic plan on switching to a “Superman Defense”  which is where Dwight Howard stands underneath the opponents basket and tries to block shots, while the rest of the team lines up behind the arc on the opposite side of the court waiting for a three point opportunity.

In all seriousness, I am still looking forward to the day that Almond finds his game, regardless of the team he is playing for.  I take that back; as long as it is not the Lakers or the Bulls…or…against the Jazz.  Unfortunately, too often the idea is better than the result, so farewell Mr. Almond.

For the Jazz, training camp will open up on the last weekend of September and we are getting a look at who will be in attendance, although the roster has not been officially announced.  In addition to the 13 players under contract, it has been reported that 2nd round draft pick Goran Suton, as well as Ronald Dupree, Wesley Matthews, and Paul Harris are all planning on attending.  Dupree has spent 5 years in the NBA and D-League with various teams and, most recently, last season with the Utah Flash.  Harris (Syracuse University) and Matthews (Marquette University) could both be potentially battling for a roster spot if Matt Harpring retires or cannot play due to injury.

There is also speculation that Jarron Collins will be returning to camp, although I haven’t heard any confirmation.  I wouldn’t be surprised to see former Utes and Flash forward Britton Johnsen at camp, as well.  Of course, the odds of any of the aforementioned players actually making the team are pretty slim (except for Collins), but it will be nice to see some new blood in the pre-season.  Are we there yet?

Thanks for the blog. I thought that Morris Almond actually signed with the Magic, but I guess being invited to training camp is a step in the right direction. I would like to see him playing in the NBA. I am a little confused about training camp. If it starts the last weekend in September, will they be done for the first pre-season game on October 1st. Is it only for a couple of days? Just wondering. Does anyone know if they are having a “meet the team” event at the ESA like they did last year before the season started?

Deb- To the best of my knowledge, Almond has only signed a non-guaranteed “training camp” contract. This allows the team to cut the players during or after the preseason. I believe training camp has always been about 5 days prior to the first preseason game….a little less glorified than…say…NFL training camp.
