Make The Trade!
Posted by J R Stewart on October 07, 2009

Before you propose a trade, do some basic research. Be familiar with the basic CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) concepts.
Check the salaries. There are rules to follow.
Run the proposed trade through a “trade checker”, like Real GM.
Value matters!!! You do not get quality for garbage, you just don’t… the best trades, the trades that get done, are one that solves needs for BOTH teams.
Even if it looks like garbage for quality, there is usually some benefit to the team giving up quality. Expiring, for long-term contracts, disgruntled players, luxury tax relief, salary cap space, draft picks, young players, player signing rights, cash, insured contracts etc.
Look at the trade from BOTH sides.
If it isn’t a “win-win” trade, go back and tinker with it. What can you add to make the trade work, for BOTH teams?
Some players are so valued, that unless they cause major problems or demand a trade, they are NOT going to be traded!
Multiple team trades baffle almost every fan, myself included. Leave those to the experts.
OK!
Now I wonder if Cleveland really would consider trading LBJ for Matt Harpring…Hummmmm. Ok, and a 2019 second round draft pick too.
Geeeeeze, they are hard to do business with.

hahaha, I was just thinking of giving them Morris Almond and we get LeBron as well as their 2011 first round pick. Yeah they are a tough team to do business with.

Nice guidelines JR. I guess it goes without saying that you are sick of hearing ridiculous trade propositions from overly hopeful fans.

Clearly a case of false advertising!
I do like getting their first round draft pick.
I just gotta be tough in negotiations. I was perhaps a little soft in giving them that 2 round draft pick in 10 years. Who know how good that might turn out to be???
Yes, you’re right. Some proposed trades make you laugh out loud, or at least giggle quietly.

We could put D-Will, LeBron, and 3 dead bodies on the court and win a title.

You mean the Cavs wouldn’t go for this trade? According to Hollinger’s stats, this makes us a 71-win team and puts the Cavs in the lottery…I’d say that’s a win-win. The Trade Machine says it works. That’s good enough, right?
Good post, J.R. We all need to be reminded every once in a while that basketball is a business, and businesses only deal when the deal is mutually beneficial.

Plus, the Cavs are dying to have Boozer back, aren’t they?

Wait so what you are saying J.R. is that the trade rumors of Jarron Collins for Dwight Howard aren’t TRUE!!!!!! WHAT??? Haha yeah, good guidelines and hopefully we will all be able to move past stupid trade ideas together.
J R Stewart on October 08, 2009 said:
The Jazz would have to get 11 more dead bodies, and at current veteran minimums, that would probably still put the Jazz over the cap.
That’s why the Blazers took Jarron, to make the trade for Dwight themselves. Anything to screw up the Jazz.

Wow, the title “Make the Trade” led me to believe you were discussing an eminent trade. Good set of guidelines though.
