4 Free Tickets (ESA Parking Tips)

2009 - 2010 Jazzbots
Being a Jazzbot has its perks. We had an awesome Season Kickoff meeting on Wednesday night at the Energy Solutions Arena.

I drove down from Ogden for the meeting in my 96 Nissan, hoping I’d be able to find some close, cheap (read: free) parking. I found an empty spot right at the Gateway, on the back side of the Apple store. No ‘No Parking’ sign, check. No red curb, check. No fire hydrant, check. Other people parked right by me, check. Perfect.

After some mix and mingle with the awesome Jazzbots crew (Most of the 2009 – 2010 team above), we all drew envelopes with numbers in them. The numbers indicated our ‘draft order’. The awesome Jazz marketing crew had brought two sets of season tickets, and each of us Jazzbots was to pick a game to go to. Free tickets! Being a Jazzbot rocks! I frantically searched the schedule. I was number 17, so I knew I’d have to be creative in picking. I got lucky, scored some tix for March’s matchup against Chris Paul and the Hornets

Did I mention that being a Jazzbot has its perks? Definitely try out next year!

After walking on the court, and taking a tour of the locker room (which is much smaller than you would think, I bet it smells really bad in there after a game,) I started walking out to where I had parked. I knew I was going to be cutting it close with the two hour parking limit, so I walked briskly.

I got to the car, and found an envelope on my window. I looked around, and found another envelope on my window. I got two more tickets! Only, instead of from the Jazzbots crew, these were from our buddies from the always friendly Salt Lake Parking Enforcement. Despite my double checking the curb, signage, and fire hydrantage. 4 free tickets in one night. Two for great seats at the Energy Solutions Arena, and two for an OK parking spot behind the Gateway.

Let this serve as a warning, as more and more go to home games. Watch where you park. It’s always worth paying the little fee to park in the Gateway lots than to get dinged with a big fee (or two!).

What parking experiences have you guys had? Where’s the best place to park? Do you pretend you’re going to class and park in the BYU Salt Lake Center building? Do you pay the big bucks to park close, or do you park blocks away and take the Trax in? What do you recommend?

I park at the FrontRunner station in Bountiful and ride that and TRAX, whenever possible. Of course, it helps that I have a free UTA pass by working at the U…

Caleb it was great to meet you on Wednesday. We had something similar happen when we went to the Houston game on Monday but my husband was able to argue his way out of the ticket. On Wednesday I just parked right next to the ESA I think along 100 south. For Jazz games we found if you go just west of the gateway you can usually find a good spot thats free to park. You can park at Crown Burger if you buy $14 worth of food which is always worth it too :)

I love being a Jazzbot. I was going to chose a New Orleans game for my tickets too but decided to go with the Suns.

@Diana

Great meeting you too! For some followup, I went down to the Salt Lake City Courts over on 2nd East and talked to a really nice lady there. She dropped the $30/ticket to $10/ticket, so I felt pretty good about that.

@Joey

I love FrontRunner. I took it down to the BYU Salt Lake Center from Ogden for a semester. Takes a little longer, but I bet it’s not bad from Bountiful. Good tip!

Hey Caleb,

I always park at the post office. It’s only five bucks and the lady at the booth always guarantees a win. All you have to ask is, “Are the Jazz gonna win tonight?” She then enthusiastically answers, “The Jazz are gonna bring it on home!” That gets me so pumped up that I will never park anywhere again…unless I am hungry in which case Crown Burgers is a good deal.

Sorry about the ticket buddy. I’d take Diana’s Crown Burger deal in heartbeat!

I’m all for searching for parking that is free. If you get down there early enough then you can usually find a lot or two that isn’t charging yet.

I’m stoked to dominate our jazzbots basketball league! Twin Towers!

It might not be worth it if you’re already driving from out of town to get to the game, but parking west of Gateway and specifically west of I-15 is never an issue. No lots, just park on pretty much any street. My wife and I walk to every game from our house just west of the freeway and it only takes about 15-20 minutes. The other plus side is that you don’t have to deal with traffic at all. The 20 minutes you would spend stuck behind cars in a lot, you are instead out enjoying the fresh (sort of) air. The down side, is that you have to be comfortable walking through some shady areas of town. I would also recommend you park in front of a house and not just randomly by the railroad tracks or something, for safety reasons. East of ESA is less “ghetto” but it is a little harder to find parking.

I hate to give up my secrets, but here goes:

Parking Meters: You only have to pay for parking meters until 6PM on weekdays. So, if you are arriving before 6,just plug in money to get you paid until 6. Also, along those lines: metered parking near ESA is tough to come by. However, there is plenty near the Gallivan Plaza TRAX stop on 300 south, as well as around the Courthouse station and the City/County building near TRAX. TRAX is free from these locations.

@Jimbo

Great idea! I’m cheap, and starving-student-poor though. But a great tip for fellow readers nonetheless.

@Matt

You and me on the same team? Game over for the other poor Jazzbots.

@Trevor

My cousin used to park over there. She always recommended it. And then I think she got scared crossing the train tracks late at night. But you’re definitely right, you’ve gotta give yourself some extra time to get over to the Arena.

@Bob

See, now that’s a parking hack. Possibly right next to the Arena, and for less than 50 cents no less.

Keep ‘em coming! I’m never getting a parking ticket again.

I always park on 400 West and about 200 North on the side of the road and Just walk because I am cheap. It drives my wife crazy

It seems to me that if you scrape up enough money for Jazz tickets, parking should be FREE. But alas that is not the case. We used to take TRAX all the time and it works out really well, takes you right to the front door. The problem is if all three of us in my family go, it is $12.00 just to ride the train. We have tried a couple of things. You can park in the Plaza Hotel (122 S West Temple) for $5.00 and take tracks to the ESA. Trax is free from that location. In fact TRAX is free from 500 South on and we see alot of people get on at the 500 south station. I guess there are many parking meters around there that do not work after 6:00 P.M. As mentioned earlier, the key is getting there early. You can also park at The Gateway for $5.00 and take TRAX or walk. I believe many restaurants validate for parking, but then if you are like us you allready spent all your money on Jazz tickets. Since we live not to far from D. WIll, I am thinking of asking him for a ride. What do you think my chances are?

Caleb Hicks on November 06, 2009 said:

@Deb
Best idea yet. You have to ask him!

On that note, I wonder where the players park. Any ideas?

Deb on November 07, 2009 said:

I believe the players park underneath the ESA, there is a driveway on the West side that always has a security guard. I bet one of those doors by the Locker Room goes directly to the parking lot.

Joey parker on November 07, 2009 said:

I believe the players park in the arena lot on the South side of the arena which we’re not allowed to use of course.

Annie on November 07, 2009 said:

Caleb I’m thinking the players park in the player’s parking lot on the southwest corner of the ESA. If you show up early, you can find a spot on the street west of West High School–just remember to look for the red paint on the curb!

Nice meeting the new Jazzbots on Wednesday btw.

Bob on November 07, 2009 said:

The players do park in the lot on the SW side of the Arena. The door they use to come in and out is by the TV trucks.
